Raising A Baby Grackle: part IV - by Mike Franzman

An abandoned grackle, in urgent need of food, warmth & shelter, was brought to me on the evening of May 22. While I always recommend putting the bird back in the nest, so adult birds will raise it, it was not an option in this case: the nest and adults had been attacked by other animals, and plummeting nighttime temperatures threatened the life of this starving nestling.
Part I covered the first 10 days.
Part II covered Days 11 - 15.
Part III covers Days 16 - 21,
(including his release on Day 18) and now... Part IV covers Days 23 - 30.
Photographed & Edited by Mike Franzman.
Please Note: we initially understood that this baby bird was a starling, so incorrectly titled the video, "Another Starling Story" at first.

I agree with you 100%. There are people that hate when humans are being nice to animals, because they think animals are safer when they fear us, because we are monsters. And although I know, that many people are disgusting, there are also nice people out there, and it is because of people like you that that little wonder is alive and well. If it was for nature, that bird would be dead long ago. Cheers dude, I really enjoy watching your videos.

as always, there is never a one sided truth. What you say might work fine with these birds, but it may be fatal if you do it to an eagle. If you imprint an eagle since birth, it will no longer be able to survive in the wild, unless you teach it how to hunt. Moreover, these birds are used to live in contact with humans, so it's no problem if they get used to us. But for an eagle, it would be disaster. They would get too close to roads, and get run over or get shot at (some people believe eagles are a threat and therefore shoot them with rifles). So yeah, it depends on what animal.

Hi Mike. My 💜 is overflowing with warmth and joy at watching all episodes in Buddy’s first month +. Can’t thank you enough for capturing Buddy’s rescue and early life, but even more I thank you so deeply for demonstrating how a human male can be tender and caring. I do not see enough of that in our culture. I hope other men will follow your lead. 💜

It's people like you who could bring peace to this world!!! I am always moved when I see someone looking out for those that that can't look out for themselves. I may be bias because I love birds, but you are motivated by compassion, you can see it in the way you take care of a helpless animal (who surely would have died if not for you) the world needs more people like you

thank you for saying so. I appreciate that, especially since some commenters say I should kill them, because they are invasive, or that they should have been left alone, they were "supposed to be out of the nest". Crazy talk, when a nest was destroyed by predators, or wind, or whatever the case was, and I know what my front yard turns into at night, predators galore. I dont always address the nay-sayers, especially since I know I saved the lives of these babies. But again, your comment was so nice, it keeps us animal lovers going! :-)

I had a Starling I raised it from a baby like you did, took it to work with me so I could feed him, I had him for 25 years, he could talk & whistle . Starlings are known to be one of the most talkative Bird there is, so I’ve heard. He sure could say a lot of words. He would take baths in my hands & I would let him outside too, thanks for sharing..

Im wondering if this isn’t a blackbird instead of a starling. The older he has gotten, the more I think he is a blackbird with the long tail and he sounds like a blackbird, especially when he flies.
@sonshineandsong
@sonshineandsong 7 дней назад
@@roundbaby4749 he's titled it a grackle and then talks about starlings being relatives. So confusing. I did some research to figure out what bird I found and learned that a grackle is related to blackbirds. So you are right.

You are doing absolutely the right thing! People who say things like leave the baby bird alone (therefore to die), or "kill him" (? some people are crazy... ) should be ignored! These are the kind of people who would destroy the planet if they could, and they are crazy! Your starling is amazing, beautiful, smart, and you raised him so well! It was great to watch his development, and how he learned, and how you took every precaution for him to feel safe, and finally confident.

Congrats to you both!👍😊😊😊🐦 Back in the 80's I raised a Cockatiel from 2 weeks. I was his Mommy. We shared a strong bond. He never wanted to be in his cage when I was home. He would snuggle up under my hair and nibble my ear and neck. Developing a bond like that is truly special. 💖

I really like your videos! I found a baby bird under a tree in June. He had a few feathers. His eyes were hard to open. I fed him with soaked dog food. In 28 days he became a beautiful black bird, looked like yours. But his tail was wider and wings were much longer. I googled he is a male common blackbird. Since it is my first time to get a bird, I always got nervous when he flew. One time he tried to fly to my shoulder, I stepped away, he fell, then he never tried. The last day he flew in my bathroom, I thought he wanted to go out. My husband put him in a box and took him to our backyard. He got scared. I guess he didn't like being grabbed. He flew to other people's garden and tried to avoid us. I put water and food for him and he ate the food. He stayed there overnight, but next morning I can't find him. The house owner told me he was there in the early morning around 5:30, but I was there 6:30, he was not there. I guess someone kicked him out because he never went back. I feed him every morning around 6:30. He should wait for me. That was him first time left home, he didn't know anything outside, he never ate wild food. I believed has died in two days without food. He flew very low. He never go on the tree. He always hid under bushes. I was crazy to look for him. He really broke my heart. Now he left home 45 days. I hope he can survive by instinct. There are a lot of birds eating on the grass in my area. I hope he can learn from them. I feel terrible to lose him.

I had a no feathered starling. Looked like Petrie from land before time lol I named him Pickles. He was such a joy to have. He had a broken pelvis from falling out of a gazebo onto concrete during a storm. Made him little shackles to help him heal. Seemed to help..He grew up sitting on his bum till I was able to get him to perch good. He passed away just before he likely would have had a successful flight, maybe within a week or two. Was devastated .I miss him still. He'd crawl up in my neck and fall asleep♥️ My lil sweet one. He was buried under a tree we planted. I call it my Pickle tree❤

Such a nice series. I raised a baby Red-Vented Bulbul and it was such a dear. It would respond to my voice, my whistle, my car's horn (yes!). Whenever I came home it would get all excited and then fly to me. Once it was old enough, I let it fly outside too. For 8 or so days, it came back every evening but then one day she didn't return. I spoke to someone and they said she probably found a mate since at that age, they pair off (6 months). I haven't seen her since. Really miss that bird. Thank you for being a nice and kind human being.

@@angelmartin7310 I really don't think there's any "usually" with these animals, every animal has its own personality, for whatever reason. I raised two baby robins once, that fell out of the same damaged nest, with no parent birds around. On "release date", one of them just was never interested in hanging around, the other hung around for a couple of weeks.

You are doing an amazing job. The only problem is this bird constantly thinks about food. If the birds are too fat when they are little they can’t fly because they got too much weight. Their wings are so fragile. He can’t lug all that weight around when he first learns how to fly.
