We have a 50/50 Snubian (Saanen/Nubian) doe who is two years old, as well as a 50/59 Snubian billy who is 7-8 months old, he was bottle fed. The doe was bred last year to a Saanen billy so we have 75/25 Saanen Nubian. I love those two breeds though, and the Snubian doe's milk tastes like unpasteurized fresh cows milk!

If you drill a hole through the salt/mineral blocks (you can also buy them pre-drilled), you can run a chain through it and hang it on the side of the fence or inside the shade shelter and it keeps it off the ground so it doesn't mold.

How large are your paddocks and how quickly to the few goats eat the grass. It looks awesome and i love your shelters. I'm grazing my herd but we don't have the paddocks just yet. I worry a little, when the grass all turns green, about bloat. Do you run in to bloat issues when the grass is all lush and green? Thanks! ;)

Blessings. Congratulations for your beautiful animals, I have a humble sugestion for you because I give this idea to a lot of people and works magnificent and is to grow your own Hydrofodder Grass for your animals, your wife mentioned that Arkansas is hard to grow regular way the alfalfa, well with this method you will have fresh grass for them all year long specially on winter time, easy to grow, 1 Kg of seeds give 6 Kg of produce, you can grow any grain you want, is very economic the set up, and you can do it in your basement or any other place perfectly, I work with farm nimals all my life since I was 4 years old now I'm 37 with my grandfather and he used this grasses for all the animals around the farm specially for the ones who gives us the milk, another think is to make your own nutritional block, if you use this one at the time you milk them you will never have problems again because they learn you will give them something at the time you are milking them, all you have to do is a platform with a little box where you put the block makes your life easier and more confortable for both, another thing is you can built with truck tires a beautifull place for them to eat so they don't throw the food to the ground, the same for the nutritional block, even for the water, all you have to do is a little drain hole for when you want to clean this unit. I can see you have a nice property, I wish we have a property like that, you can make a lot of money, we came from Puerto Rico on 2010 and I put my Bussines Plan on the internet, and believe you can make a couple of millions selling all the veggies, greens, sprouts & products you can produce in your farm, bur ubfortunatelly we don't have any luck so far, 2 people contact me 1 in Montana, 1 in Illinois but all they want is my knowledge and my formulas for my 100% Oganic 100% green Oganic fertilizers, pesticides, animal foods, artisan products from them and after throw me out, and that is what they did when I said NO to their request. I'm an expert in Permaculture, Aquaculture, Vermiculture, Urban, Poly and Biodynamic Agricuture, I'm half Spanish [Spain], half Italian, my wife is 25 years old from Puerto Rico and her family is from Spain. When my grandfather came to Puerto Rico from Italy he brings all that Old World's knowledge and implemented in the new world, I born in Ct but grows in PR, I'm a Youth & Missionary pastor for 19 tears now. You can work your goats in different ways and use all that beautifull land to produce vegetables and make more money, raise more animals, restaurants are looking now for free range grass feed animals and pay top money for them, like chickens, ducks, game birds, plus you can grow fish to, built little by little greenhouses so you produce all year long, open your own CSA (Community Supportive Agriculture), a Farm's Stand, go to the Tailgates & Farmer's Markets, sell in winter the Aquafodder grass to another ranchers, only you put the limits to your own Market, we are talking about Millions of dollars a year if you do all this in the right way, you can start something new in your area, I praying to found a partner who wants to make a lot of money in Organic Farming and Raising Organic Animals, if you know somebody with a good and clean heart, No Scams like we suffer 2 times already let me know i"m more than glad to contact them, or somebody who has a farm and don't know how to work it, or is no working the farm right now please contact me @ B r o t h e r a y i n J e s u s @ g m a i l . c o m OR if you need help or have questions related to Organic Farming and your animals feel free to contact me. @doafoofighters
@doafoofighters 8 лет назад
Sorry this took so long, my husband may have answered. My local co-op has a 20 pound bag from Noble Goat brand of loose mineral that you put in a bowl for about $15. I also buy the 50 pound mixed breed (in Cow section) at Tractor Supply for I think near $10. Make sure it has selenium, zinc, copper. You can also give a zinc tablet and for that matter human vitamins for AD & E, Vit B, and Iron. I do leave about 2 cups at a time and check twice a week to refill as needed. They eat that and the baking soda as needed. I also now give shots of minerals. I need to do another update!

+Zachary Harms No, we have two bucks that are kept separate except when we attempt to breed. Multiple reasons - 1) we don't want the bucks to affect the milk taste (and it will) and 2) we want to control when they're bred and to whom.

+1mtstewart Yes, they are. Whoever owned them before us did a poor job of dehorning (though sometimes they grow back anyways). In this case, they all came from the same family. We did use a wire saw to cut them off on both the male & female.

Thanks for the video. Good info. Just bought some land to do some homesteading and was thinking of goats. I live in the North Eastern US. It was mentioned that the goats stayed in that open structure all through a harsh winter. What steps do you take to keep them warm enough in the winter?
@tacticalhomesteader
@tacticalhomesteader 9 лет назад
bluewater454 That's not the impression I meant to give. We acquired all of the Saanen goats around the 2nd week of March in 2014. The shelter was built hastily that week, and then we had one more large snow that stayed on the ground about 3 days, if memory serves me. They made it just fine through that. For the winter of 2014-2015, we purchased four $8 8x4' 1/2" OSB boards that we used on the sides to block the wind and weather. Check that out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6iTCbgB95Lo.html

Did you change bedding or anything during winter months ... We are in Alabama and had a harsh winter and although they seemed fine I felt like they needed more warmth this year we have a similar set up more closed off with pine shavings .. Any suggestions or is that good for them
@tacticalhomesteader
@tacticalhomesteader 9 лет назад
We cleaned it all out back in December before the harsh cold hit and have just been adding hay on top, similar to a deep litter method for chicken coops. It needs to be changed again. I think pine shavings should be fine - you'll just want to keep adding to it to give them a fresh, clean, dry layer on top. They have no aversion to urinating or defecating where they sleep. At least chickens have roost bars....

Quick question- do you keep your breeding billy goat with your dairy goats while milking? does it affect the milk taste? We are researching goat milk/ dairy goats for our homestead but we all hate commercial goat cheese and would like a sweeter milk with no goaty taste. Thanks so much!
@tacticalhomesteader
@tacticalhomesteader 8 лет назад
+Jennifer Cooper We do not. I'm going to try to get another goat video out soon. For most of the summer we have had the billies separated in a different paddock. Now that they are in rut, we have each in a separate paddock with the females they are supposed to breed. The goats being milked as well as the young does are still in the main paddock area. We have had the previous billy (that we sold) in there with the goats, not during his rut, and we didn't notice a difference. However, we have read that during the rut especially, there will be a difference in taste of the milk which is why we're keeping them separate.

I raise goats too, I have 5 acres they roam on and spend probably $400 a year feeding 6 adult goats, but I sell the babies for $60 and $70, so 6 babies a year pays for the feed. They have kids twice a year on average, 10 at a time.

@tacticalhomesteader
@tacticalhomesteader 9 лет назад
I'm not sure about exact dimensions. A couple of them are not square, so I'm not doing math...just educated guessing. The central enclosure with the shelter is about 80'x60' as are one of the more "square" paddocks and one of the odd shaped paddocks. The others 2 odd-shaped paddocks are equivalent to about 80'x95' and 80'x150'.

These Saanen's were purchased as adults so we couldn't debud them. Their kids were debudded. They should be due here in the spring again, and if any are female, we plan to keep them, so we'll have them debudded as well. Thanks for for the advice!
