We raise Cornish Cross and dual purpose barnyard mixes. In this video we'll compare the cost of raising each type of bird from hatchling to processing day. Raising our own chickens gives us a sense of pride in knowing the birds lived happy and healthy lives, and we believe the investments are worth it. These cost comparisons will help break down each type of chicken into dollar per pound.

Thank you! New subscriber here. I’m a chicken wannabe and still at least a year probably much longer before we will be on property that might lend itself to raising meat birds. How old/young are Cornish cross roosters when they start crowing?? We will be on a property 226 feet wide with neighbors on each side.

Yes, that's standard advice and good for newbies to follow while they learn what works best for their farm and flocks. You can harvest and process them at about 4 weeks for a Cornish Game Hen, or let them grow as long as they can healthily tolerate it. Free ranging often and early will help them maintain strong legs. I've let them grow as old as 12 weeks before and had harvested weight birds at 9+ pounds. The meat was still beautifully tender at that age thanks to the breed. Lots of luck with your harvest!

Wow! We 'hid' those painted kindness rocks in public parks during our launch year of 2021 when they were a pandemic-friendly family activity. It's wild to know that they're still traveling out there! What state did you find it in? And, congrats! Feel welcome to keep it or rehide it in a location where it is permitted to do so. 🐣
