Today we received our final batch of cornish cross broiler chickens for the season. We figured this would be a perfect time to do a weekly series covering all aspects of raising meat chickens. We order our chicks from Welp Hatchery and have been very happy with the birds we get from them. In this series we will cover everything that is need to raise healthy cornish cross chickens from start to finish.

I just started my first ever batch of broiler chicks yesterday. Starting out small with just 25 chicks. This series of videos gave me the knowledge and confidence to do it. I have been through the entire series several times, and will be watching again week to week as my chicks grow. I really appreciate all of the information that you share. LOVE your videos!! You make me envious of your life! We own 37 acres 150 miles from where we live and you make me want to homestead there! I live in Mesa, AZ and although I am SICK of city (suburb) living, I don't know if I am capable of living out in the middle of nowhere! I know the area I lived in Maricopa county 32years. After moving to California for seventeen more years finally purchased a small three acre homestead in NM. Believe me your capable of much more then you give yourself credit for. We are over fifty five w disabilities and are living this amazing life on our small farm. We made it handicapped accessible some still in progress. I wish we’d moved farther out w more land but I love it here. Good luck on your property

Oh boy. There needs to be plucking and killing. I did 10 birds. One had an accident. The rest turned into holy heck big and not even 8 weeks. I hunt ducks and expected cleaning one to be like a duck. It's not. A chicken has tough membranes seperating it's cavity into compartments. Not at all like a wild duck. Plucking is easy. Use them blue work gloves and is fast.

This is really helpful, we had free range chickens when I was small, they ran free & roast in small trees. We found eggs by following hens or listening to the hens cackle when they lay an egg. Every Spring a hen would show up with 12-18 chicks, because we never found her nest & we would lose a few to predators, but we had 25- 50 chickens at all times. So raising chicks is new to me. Rabbit I have raised, no chicks.

It has been awhile since i watched any of your videos and was happy to see that you were doing a series on raising chickens! Years ago i had a few acres and did what you 2 did,the kids grew up with plenty of animals around and we had a great way of life.Learned hard lessons along the way about predditors and chickens..black snakes are great for keeping mice and rats under control but not so much help as you said for chicks and eggs lol! MY worst memory was when i raised 150 chicks to butchering size and came home from work planing to start to harvest our home grown meat only to find on the very day i was going to start ,some roge dogs had come threw and had a great time chasing down and killing all but 15 of the 150. I mean to tell you it looked like a war zone , and i will never forget that site and how mad we were! I now am an OLD FART and work @ Perdue Farms where we make the feed for all the chickens that the farmers raise for Perdue Food,, and you all see in the grocery store. You would not believe all the science and tech that goes into making chicken feed and the high standards that we

Thank you! Found some cheap serving trays with lips at Walmart for their water. Our Extension Service agent gave a class on chicken production and said to always withhold food for 12 hours. However I m going to follow your plan of 24 hour availability the first 3 weeks. You two are my heroes 🦸‍♀️

A friend gave me some very old (1920's - 1930's) chicken pamphlets/books on raising chickens. In the one there was an article about coccidiosis. At the time, there was no real treatment for the condition other than keeping the water source clean and even then there was no guarantee of not having a problem with it.

My understanding is that a lot of times they have it before you even get them. That is exactly why we use just the one bag of medicated feed. I figure after the first bag, I can control their environment but I can't control what happened before I received them. BTW...I LOVE reading those old books!

We two get pasty butt and one died the day after we got them. I put Bragg’s organic vinegar in their water. I was able to clean up their butts though and they’re both still kickin’!

Please keep this up of your small series like this they are great info. I would recommend keeping a log of expenses so that when you are ready to process the chickens you can provide a cost analysis down to the cost to raise per chicken and $ per LBs of meat.

+TZ Homestead what we plan on doing is letting everyone know exactly how many bags of feed, any chicks we lost, etc at the end so you can figure the cost. Feed prices vary so much from place to place so I think this will be the best way so you can figure out what it would cost in your area.

Welps Hatchery has many selections at a good price but last couple orders I received lots of dead on arrival and some which eventually die within 24 hrs had trouble getting a refund luckily PayPal was able to help me out for me ordering from any hatchery is a gamble

I'm sure you will cover this in a future video, but I'm about 2 weeks ahead of you with my broiler chicks. What do you feed them after the 1st bag of medicated feed. The organic feed is quite expensive and if there is a better price alternative I am highly interested!

We don't feed organic for exactly that reason. We use a good quality, local feed that is an 18% grower feed. After 3 weeks we switch to 12 hours on 12 hours off. That is extremely important or they will grow to fast. We also raise them in tractors so they get all the fresh grass, bugs, etc. that they can eat. Hope this helps!

My hatchery here in Canada day to leave the dirty litter in for the first three weeks and just add fresh bedding because they can get the medication through the feet as well. We had 100% survival this year. Got 50 Cornishcross pullets and slaughter 50. Bergs Hatchery here in Manitoba is awesome. Great video.

I really love the format in which your videos are made. It is helping me to be educated on all details surrounding how to prepare for animals, when to purchase, and finally everything involved in how to harvest. There are so many moving parts to starting, maintaining, and growing your homestead. For a city girl like me, it's a lot! Have 100 ordered in for next week with a planned butchering date of about 10 Oct... will be cutting a couple of mineral tubs to make the pan for the water's. Another question I wanted to ask is this. Is there a reason you order all roosters? Is there a weight difference in the birds at the end and processed between rooster or hen? Just curious.

Great question! We used to order straight run but noticed the roosters grow much bigger than the hens in the same amount of time and really don't consume much more feed. I should try grass hay because pine shavings it is a little bit pricey I pay nearly $7 I buy at least 4 bundles every week pine shavings is not that bad it does smell good observes any wetness and poo etc etc but if theirs a plan B where I can save Grass hay it is

If you put grit or sand down for the birds they won't get pasty butt. I always put sand with my feet in a separate bowl for my chicks and none of them get pasty butt for capping over

Do you worry about the heat lamp causing the hay to catch fire?

I don't. I make sure it is up high enough that it's not an issue. If it's low enough to start a fire it would also be low enough to injure the chicks. I always turn it on several hours before the chicks arrive and then put my hand down on the hay to make sure it's not too hot. You could use a thermometer (we did at first) but after you've done it enough times you realize that you don't have to be that accurate! God Bless! - Kevin & Sarah

I got 25 cornish cross May 26th. I lost 6 baby chicks in the first week leaving me with 19. After the 2nd week I lost 2 more. Im 6 weeks in and all was fine. The last two days Ive lost 3 chickens every morning I go out. Im completely baffled at what is going on. I changed their feed to a grower from a crumble but nothing else has changed. Someone olease help with any info.

Got all of the chicks in alive and only 2 looked a bit smaller and weaker. After two days they are all doing well. I got the apple cider with Mother on it and gave them the recommended amount....thank you for that. I will have my chicks on a dirt floor in about a week just to give them all more room. I will take the cattle tub out but leave the brooder over head so I can give them heat as needed. at 3 weeks I have an over head covered area for them and will let them out during the day into a weeded area that they can forage in with feed in the covered area to coax them in before dark.

I watched all six episodes and am eagerly awaiting week 7. I also watched your video on how to build the tractors. I have to thank you for your unpretentious and yet very informative videos. I have a couple of questions, and I didn't know which video to post them to, so I hope you see this comment. First, what is the minimum amount of land you think is necessary to move the tractors on? I see that you move them to a new spot every day, and I'm wondering if you can put them back on the same patch of land you used on day one on day eight (so basically 7 spots) or if you need to have enough room to have them on a new patch every day for all 8 weeks (56 spots). I live on a quarter acre of land in Hawaii, and wanted to utilize the chickens to lay the foundation for a future garden site if possible. Second, I looked at the Welp site, and I want to know if you recommend the Marek's immunization or not. I don't know a lot about chicken diseases, so I'm not sure if Marek's is deadly. I probably won't attempt a run at Cornish X Rocks until I have a small flock of egg-layers (probably Orpingtons) established, but I definitely want to give it a try.

We do not recommend putting the chickens on an already used spot for the health of the chickens and the health of your soil. We don't put another tractor on the same spot for a year. The chickens are moved into tractors at 3 weeks, so you would need 35 spots per tractor. The nitrogen output of these chickens will require a good several months (I would say 6) to be at a level that will be helpful rather than damaging to a new garden. Regarding Marek's vaccination, it really depends on the incidence in your area. We don't vaccinate and haven't had a problem. But, we know a homestead in Alabama that lost an entire flock due to Marek's.

Let me start off by saying I love you channel and keep up the good work. I am going to try meat chickens for the first time in a few weeks and was wondering what brand of medicated chick food do you recommend?

We use a local brand but really any good quality brand will be about the same.
