Duck eggs make fantastic noodles. The color is so rich and the noodles are almost silky smooth after they are rolled very thin.

They make good cakes too. Ducks can swallow their feed better if they can wash it down, they like having water close to their feed, but they are messy little guys. Awsome insect control

Haha! You used Olivia's eggpron. Should I make a man sized one? It's weird to be sitting on my couch and see something that I made on a video. We love your channel so much. We got a blueberry grape organic grocery store one. Two out of 5 of us liked it(the parents). The 3 kids made faces and comments about fiz and smell. I make kimchi and drink kefer so am used to the fermentation. My husband and I are going to order a scobi and start a batch soon. Btw, following the kombucha with a beer makes for some pretty awesome belches😂

When I was a growing up in NH back in the 50's we had ducks in the coop with the chickens to help keep warm in the winter. The hIgh school home economics teacher who lived across the street loved using the duck eggs in class to show students the difference in their cakes.

Good Evening Al i raise Khaki campbels here in the uk. Yes they are good for eggs But im not too sure about as a meat bird they are only skinny lol I think as a very good all round meat/egg breed Duck the best bet is Muscovys in my opinion The males get real big plenty of meat and the eggs are of a good size !!
@LumnahAcres
@LumnahAcres 7 лет назад
DO you need to have a pond or a pool for the Muscovys?
@MrMush78
@MrMush78 7 лет назад
Lumnah Acres no duck "needs" a pond as such they just need a bowl or whatever you have water in deep enough for them to be able to dunk there heads in the main reason is so they can keep there nasel passage clean /clear (2 little holes top of there bill) sure in a ideal world we would all have a pond for our ducks but it is not a necessity 👍

@KelikakuCoutin
@KelikakuCoutin 7 лет назад
Muscovys are tree ducks. I had a pair for years, both of which laid daily. They should have a tub of water they can preen in, or they'll get dirty and disgusting. They don't need a pond, but really appreciate a place to swim. At least a tub in which they can preen is fine. You keep your poultry in a pasture, so I surmise that they'll be able to keep pretty clean in any case - just being exposed to a lot of grass. You can possibly get away without a preening tub. Also, they are "quackless." They do not quack, and they're very quiet. They can be a little aggressive, but not like geese. They should be "gentled" like pets, which can avoid aggressiveness. I wouldn't keep more than one drake, if any. Also, they'll readily cross-mate with the Mallards. Eggs will be fertile, and produce a sterile "mule" duck. They're nearly twice the size (meatwise) of Mallard breeds (like Runner Ducks or Khaki-Campbells). Also, their meat is very lean, and very low in fat. They have a veal-like meat, very un-ducklike. So, they're not a source of duckfat. It's unusual for them to lay daily like mine did. It worried me and I actually called the breeder who supplied the ducklings. The breeder told me it's because I treated them like pets, and it's sign of contentedness. They'll start to lay at about three months. The eggs are larger than chicken eggs, about the size of a grade AAA Jumbo grocery store egg. The shells are a little harder to crack, and it takes a few days to get used to that. After about week they start tasting the same as chicken eggs. Also, these ducks can handle the cold. They'll go out in sub-freezing weather without batting an eyelash. They can fly, so you should clip a few feathers off one wing (in the middle) every moult. They'll still be able to catch as much air as a chicken that way. They like to stay home anyway. Hope this helped, and I hope you get several females to augment your poultry operation. They have a pretty engaging personality, as poultry animals go. If nothing else, they'll provide you with entertainment. B'H.
@ralphmills7322

My parents had muscoys, They were ugly in both appearance and temperament! We had a small stream running in back of the house about 8 foot wide. Those mean, old hens would lay eggs on the opposite bank just so they could hiss at father and I when we wade across to collect. I'll grant they were good foragers, that stream was full of crayfish and minnows before the ducks took it over. So a duck breed that has a good disposition, can be raised in a wash tub, quacks instead of hisses and stays within the poultry fencing and not make every day an Easter egg hunt is alright with me. I'll leave those vulture faced brutes to those who can appreciate their unique character (and flavor).

In my experience, when rendered, lamb fat burns cleaner. It's better than many other animal fats for torches or lanterns. Beef, pork, and even chicken fat put off a lot of soot when burning, but lamb fat puts of very little soot.

All this mention of duck eggs, meat and fat has made me hungry for French food! Perhaps a nice duck cassoulet once those beans of yours are grown! Seeing Olivia help on the homestead so often has me wondering about the FFA and 4-H and whether they cater to homesteading or if there's a modern homesteading equivalent for young homesteaders?

Ducks are water birds, designed to be on and in water. Water keeps their eyes healthy. .splashing around and preening keeps their plumage clean and healthily waterproof. A duck splashing around in water is a happy sight.

Lots of pockets for eggs and tools. Olivia is so helpful in the kitchen with all that you guys are doing. She is learning soooo much!! Thanks for sharing!

Dan 821.....Duck (and goose) eggs are superior for baking and 'specialty cooking', but you CAN use them just like chicken eggs in the frying pan. That said, it'd be kinda like using your Mercedes to haul animal feed. Remember, MOST ducks and geese don't lay 365 like chickens. Muscovys lay about 20-30 eggs a year max, but geese only lay 12-18 a year in MY experience. They're here for meat after the first laying season. Since they'll eat lot of the 'graze' that chickens won't, the biggest advantage to having water fowl in with your chickens is having the need for only ONE pen/tractor. They all get along just fine if they are raised together from hatching. DON't try to introduce feathered ducks or geese in with a flock of chickens. The 'pecking order stress' will cost you a BUNCH of chicken eggs, and the ducks and geese may never lay. Hope this helps when you try some. Sorry for butting in.

I love duck eggs! I have chickens, quail, pheasants, parakeets, and ducks. My ducks are mallards, so not to many eggs for me😭

What size is the jar you make your Kombucha in and where do I find one with the stainless steel nozzle? Also, how much juice did you put into the bottles before adding the Kombucha? And lastly, it looks like she fills the bottles to the top. Do you have any overflow problems with the second ferment with the bottles that full?

What age did your ducks start laying ? Our Khaki Campbell’s are 8-9 weeks old, we still can’t tell the hens from the drakes yet. I suspect we have at least 2-3 drakes. I hope they will be laying by mid August to late September.

You have a metal spigot on th kombucha crock. I have always been told touching the Scobi with metal will kill it.
