I am also the mother of an addict raising 3 out of my 5 grandchildren. In 2015 when my daughter told me she was pregnant I lived in another state. The closer her due date got I decided to come back home at least until my grandson was born that was 9 yrs ago and I am still here. Long story short in 2017 2 years after my grandson was born my granddaughter was born when she was 5 months old my daughter decided getting high and living in condemned houses was the life she wanted. In 2020 she had her 3rd baby 2022 her 4th he was taken away at birth and placed in foster care the oldest 2 still with me and grandson #2 lived with his paternal grandfather. She went to rehab got grand baby #4 back. When he was 4 months old she got pregnant again and in 2023 my 5th grandbaby 2nd granddaughter was born. I thought she had been clean found out she wasn’t. When my granddaughter was 2 months old she brought her over one morning said here mom I am going to rehab no warning no nothing. That was last June 2023. At this time my daughter is still in rehab I still have the older 2 and for the last year the youngest and the 2 middle boys are living happily with their paternal grandparents.
You folks are rockstars. Despite what we are led to believe, heroes walk beside us everyday but we don't always know it perhaps because, like you folks were, they keep their 'situation' bottled up inside. You say you're not patting yourself on the back, well I'm giving you folks a huge pat on the back. Keep going, you're doing great.
Thank you for sharing your story with the world. My respect for you and your husband is absolute, it is such a weight to carry, even though the joy of your grandson being safe and in your life makes all the struggle worthwhile.
