ℹ️ Ukrainian filmmaker Anastasiia Suprun-Zhyvodrova has shot the "Raising waves" - a documentary about the Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin. The film was made before Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. Post-production was done during the war against Ukraine in 2022-2023. Premiere of the movie takes place on February 18th at the@Filmhuisdenhaag[bit.ly/3RT3cwO] in a frame of the festival 'Around Maxim Shalygin' organised by Classical Now!
The director and her team followed the composer to Dniprodzerzhynsk, where Shalygin grew up in a flat in a typical nine-store building. To overcome the depressing view & environment, he created his own world for himself, which he wanted to translate into music as a composer. He went on to study composition in Kyiv Conservatory and became fascinated by the music of Louis Andriessen, which prompted him to further study at The Hague @@KonconservatoriumDH. He continued to live there and became one of the most distinctive composers of his generation.
The film crew followed him in The Hague, at the @@DagBranding festival, where the cameras were filming the premiere of "Severade" with @mayafridman4175, @CelloOctetAmsterdam & Rob van den Broek. They also visited the @KunstmuseumDenHaag and The Hague beach where he finds a lot of inspiration and of course his house, where he composes.
