the thing is the west wasn't democratic when it was developing, it was imperial and hence they were able to steal resources and labor from the colonies to grow economically, only when they had looted enough and colonies were not financially viable they switched to democracy because they didn't need to grow after that, one characteristic of democracy is that it is good and beneficial for economically and technologically advanced countries but not so effective for developing countries because progress in democracy is slow and tedious because giving rights to everyone means clash ideas and goals (even if some or most of those ideas are bad) which effectively cancel each other out leading to aimlessness but the downside of non democratic nations is lack of rights for the citizens and risk of wars with other countries which is exactly what is happening now in russia and china, they will eventually war with their neighbors and cause loss of wealth for all, so in truth there is no system which is any good for governance its choosing between rock and hard place.
