Today we are back at trying to make dry hay! We start off the afternoon with the two New Holland roll bar rakes. Being pulled by the 686 International and the 1650 Oliver Tractors. Next we get the baler ready for action, and before we know it we are baling dry hay. Thank you all for watching! We hope you enjoy the video.

I love seeing the New Holland small square baler at work. My great-great-uncle, Eddie Nolt, invented the self-tieing knotter. John Deere rejected his invention so he worked with a small, almost failing, local farm machinery company in New Holland Pennsylvania. Their small square baler with the Nolt knotter turned the company around and made it a major player in the farm equipment market for years to come.

And everyone still uses the same knotter! Amazing story, and I know that you appreciate your uncle's contributions to Ag! 👍👍

Lots of fond memories for me having done the same exact work in Wisconsin in the 60's. Red tractors and New Holland rakes and bailers. Unloading and piling bales for winter feed. Nice to see your whole family involved to help with the work.

I dont miss those day on the farm... I am alergic to grass so I had to wear long sleeves , ect... I still looked like I sorted wild cats at the end of the day

You're going to have quite a stack of bales by the time you get done. The baler seems to be performing well. We transitioned to 4x5 round bales about 17 years ago when the boys weren't available on a regular basis. Now my youngest son does the baling and I move the bales to the barn, or in a line off the field.

No gym can give you the workout that small (now) bales of hay can give you! You use every muscle in your body either unloading or stacking them. I think I had my eyelashes cramp up once, stacking hay! 😂😂😂

Even saw Mom out there moving hay. Rebuild the motor on the Oliver unless you can find a really good deal out there. We have made many, many thousands of square bales over the years. This was always satisfying work.

I understand your question on the Oliver, however with the cost of newer tractors it might make sense, especially a diesel repower.

I’m partial to Oliver tractors an ih tractors, just to name a few. My dad did check the bailer every time pulling out of the shed oiled the chains grease , test run makes sure it was in good order. Had a Massey Furguson 127 bale thrower hooked to Massey Furguson 285 w/cab , use to have an Oliver 1355 diesel up until 1990 when I burnt up . Than dad got a 1991 case international 595 w/ rops system I loved driving that tractor. Great seeing the family work together.

I may be wrong but is the carb on the Oliver an updraft? if it's a normal downdraft carb (like a car) I can see gas dripping down. I take your word for it though if you see gas in the oil. Another commenter mentioned swapping in another type of engine. Or maybe you can find a rebuilt motor or block. I hear ya everything on that tractor is still good, worth pursuing a new engine. It does a lot of useful work, worth keeping.

A lot of work with them bales we used to do 40k a year riding the rake behind baler I bet in the future you will have a big square baler here in minnesota it seems can get a decent one for 12k to 16k the 7810 would handle it good

Aaron, when you are talking about the regenerative features of the field at 10:50 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LDumHhAqSIs.html in the video and the video cuts to you showing the ground you sound just like your dad. George's voice is so distinctive I got confused for a minute (the raking shots switching from the Oliver to the IH were already throwing me off). Great video as usual. Thank you for sharing your life with us!

Are there ever pucker moments with the tri-cycle front ends or are you guys just use to it? Rebuild that Oliver, would make a great video series. When you get old and need a new part wouldn't you take care of it? Old tractors deserve the same :)

Just a comment on the Oliver, was wondering if gas getting in the crankcase through an issue with the fuel pump allowing gas to leak past a seal

55 years ago when I was growing up, we had a neighbor with her new Holland bell thrower, and he made 2 foot bales, 2 feet long, he said why make them three for 28 charger to work with him, and I agreed, we had a bill through her and made it to Foot bills too, 2 feet long

Check the float-valve inside the carburettor. If it doesn't shut-off gas gets into the cylinders.

I don't know why you guys don't atleast double them up. We do a lot of hay for gorse people. Some of the pickest people around. Have a speed v rake. 3 mower passes in one row for 575 baler. Eats it well. Just alot of trips around with the baler and wagons. Have a good one guys
@prariewindsfarm
@prariewindsfarm 2 месяца назад
Just a thought that others may have had already. Is that carburetor float getting stuck open or does it have a leak in the float? I had a tractor once that dumped gas into the crank case because of a bad float.

What is the estimate to rebuild that engine in the Oliver? The price of a new one is hard to justify. We always had John Deere, given they are moving production to Mexico, a no brainer to stop supporting them.

I don"t know. As is, you wouldn"t get much, if anything, out of the Oliver on a trade. If you buy a replacement tractor, then you may have a payment. If you rebuild the engine, ya have no payment, you know what you"ve got and the ole Ollie should last many more years. But if you buy a new tractor, well you have a new reliable tractor and the Ollie rusts under a tree somewhere.
