Raku is an ancient Japanese firing process that dates back to the 16th century. In essence, Raku is when pots are removed from the kiln when they are glowing red hot, then placed within combustible materials to rapidly reduce the temperature. The glazed areas of the pot have an iridescent copper surface with varying beautiful textures. Any area left unglazed turns charcoal/black due to the smoke absorption during the reduction process. Depending on the angle and intensity of surrounding light, the copper surface changes colors.
