Great to hear this positive review and especially your enjoyment of the unexpected and difficult to pin down tasting notes. I have the Rampur Double Cask which was one of my ‘toe in the water’ buys. It has great reviews on Whiskybase but some negatives too. The science of making good whisky has spread far from Scotland and will undoubtedly bring some unwelcome and challenging problems for those who are cloth eared and high handed. Keep telling the industry Ralfy, you are like John the Baptist, a voice in the dark.

I think it's super interesting to see how different climates and atmospheres, etc, produce different flavors. Of course you have to be starting with a good spirit from the still before that can happen.

I think you mean ‘a voice in the wilderness’ but I totally agree. The thing about trying types of whisky off our radar is that we have strived to find whiskies that float our boat and for many it is a costly learning curve. I have tried numerous whiskies but have had numerous disappointing experiences… nothing worse than to keep trying a whisky in the hope it will suddenly come to life, every time you go to pour a dram you do it with a certain reticence and brace for disappointment. Last one I tried I drank and shared for 6 months… the best thing about it was seeing the empty bottle and trying not to do it again. Ralfy’s reviews have really helped and guided me through the whisky minefield and saved me money and disappointment, which I think is part of what motivates these reviews. I can’t wait to try this Indian Whisky. Nuff said.

When I was doing a lot of beer brewing, I'd always get people asking, "How can I get the chill haze out of the beer?" I guess we all like the visual impact of a crystal clear glass, but I never cared about that. Some of the haziest beers were the best tasting.

“Authenticity of presentation “ is an essential way of describing and understanding why this merits our attention. Many thanks dear Ralfy for this fine review and very helpful. Kindest regards, Sandro

Great review Ralfy!! Love from India ♥️ Amruth, Paul John , Indri and now Rampur have made significant strides in crafting exceptional whiskies that have garnered international acclaim and put Indian single malts on the global map by winning the hearts of whisky connoisseurs.

Glad to get your valued opinion on Rampur ‘Asava’. In ancient India there were few liquors used to be distilled. Apart from ‘Asava’, others were ‘Madhvi’ & ‘Gaudri’. Rampur also has two more single malt varieties: Select and Double cask/barrel. All those are non-chill filtered. Different flavor profiles. Please try those too. Incidentally Rampur doesn’t market these whiskies. Mostly available in overseas markets and duty-free shops. Thank you for your review. Enjoyed thoroughly

I've only tried Amrut from India so far, and while it's good, it wasn't as radically different to Scotch or other world whiskies made in the Scotch mould. Glad to hear this one offers a different flavour spectrum.

Been saying for a long time how good India whisky is and have converted some seasoned scotch drinkers to it via the Facebook groups. Bottom line it's quality gear! Rampur is kind of the alternative to Amrut and Paul John. Bit more fruity. This Asava has a Turkish delight vibe going on and the PX bottle is also well worth checking as well.

Was lucky enough to take part in Cadenheads warehouse tasting last Saturday in Campbeltown. All brilliant drams, but India’s John Paul stole the show for at least half of us, when compared against the five Scottish options.

A favorite. I also thoroughly enjoy the original Rampur. Do yourself a favor and snag both for a beautiful "change of pace".

I grabbed an Indri Trini after your review and loved it. Eventually I also found and picked up an Indri Dru which I'm finally opening now for this video. This stuff is so lightly filtered that the bottle was full of flocculation. I had to shake it up!

Thanks for reviewing it. You have to try another one- Rampur Double cask. It is even more interesting and unusual. Nothing to compare.

It is made with 6-row barley like most other Indian whiskies. Different from the typical 2-row barley used elsewhere.

I have quite a few bottles from the Rampur Single Malt range, the Select Series, the Double Cask and the Asava. The latter pair is at 45% ABV. The Select series has Cask Strength versions too, bottled at 51.2% - 57.8% ABV. Barley is six-row variety. Surprised that you got a nylon bag. I've got velvet bags, of different colours. Pretty decent wines too. But their Rum is hogwash. Some versions are available at our Defence Canteens too, for £ 42 to £ 50. The whiskies are between 40-45 months old.

Great reviews Ralfy. Is there any traction on requirements to disclose additives, sugars, flavors, etc. on the labels of whiskey or other alcohol beverages? Seems odd that (in the USA anyway) all food and drink are required to disclose all ingredients but when it comes to alcohol, NOTHING.

I purchased Paul John - Classic Select Cask 55.2% from an off-license store in the Netherlands for €37 (£31). The label indicated that the whisky had not undergone cold filtering and retained its natural colour. First of all, I thought it was a bargain, and when I tasted it-wow, what a fine taste for a 55.2% whiskey! I wouldn’t call myself a whisky expert, but as a regular viewer of Mr. Ralfy, I do know what’s good and what’s rubbish (Yes, Johnnie Walker, I can’t believe how you get away with it 😜). And here’s the sad part: coming from India, I hadn’t/haven't heard much about these whiskies except from the real connoisseurs. They’re still undervalued and undersold. This product was also marked as “export overseas only,” while the Indian masses remain stuck on Chivas, Johnnie, et al. So, coming back to the point-your reviews DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!! Keep them coming, Sir! 😃

Ralfy -- - just reading about the Diageo/ Port Ellen Gemini bottlings, and the SmokeDNAi. Subject matter worth exploring? $50,000 a bottle? Insanity... curious to hear your read on this. Is tech replacing tradition rather than assisting it?

Ralfy, you should try Bacanora since you like Whiskey and Mezcal. Bacanora was once an illegal agave spirit. I really enjoy Kilinga Bacanora. The reposado version is the tops. I haven't tried the anejo version yet.

Since 1943? Then why did they release a 2-3 yr old whisky? Why didn't they age it more? What's the % alc?
