ralfy review 842 - Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19yo @46.2% 

I am glad to hear there is still people who's first language is a celtic language. Here in Brittany our celtic language (brittonic not gaelic, same group as the Welsh) has been almost destroyed and hunted by the centralistic French state. We are still struggling to keep it alive and make part of our Breton environment. It's a shame.

This is exactly what I did. Looking for a 21 year old too so we can have when she turns 21.

I wonder how much you paid over there; I just found one here in Calgary for $439.

my first ever experience into peated scotch was a Laphroaig. i was about 30 and thought it was awful. fast forward 23 years and they are my favorites. Slainte!

My first experience with Islay Scotch was Laphroaig Lore. It was new on the shelf at one of my favorite restaurant bars. Holy sh**, it was tough to drink at first, but I started my Islay journey right there. There was no price for it at the bar yet, so I got the dram for five bucks. Something that you take a chance on and it opens up a whole new world of Scotch.

@@h1n1worm Ralfys reviews are different because he takes his time with the bottle, only publishes a video when he has done his research and gives the whisky time to breathe, experiments with water and thus has a different and more holistic approach. The score is the same as with Ardbeg 10 because the 10yo is an excellent malt, it is as good as the 19yo but offers a different experience and perspective on the distillate :)

the only ardbeg more expensive than 10yo i buy is the uigeadail.

Just blind tasted them tonight and side by side this makes the 10 year burst alive with youthful energy that is initially extremely appealing and pulls your favor. Then the 19 comes along and seduces your senses and just leaves you wondering: how did I pour a glass 1 hr ago and only drink half of it...

This is true, but I can definitely tell you that with years of experience and as you try whiskies in the thousands of dollars range, branding and pricing stops influencing you the way it does early on. When I first started my whisky journey, there was 'allure' to the 18 yr then the 21, then the 25... there was 'prestige' to the $100 price point then the $200 price point and so on... because I had never experienced those things before. But once you have had 35 year old drams, once you own dozens of 21 year old whiskies, there isn't much difference in 'prestige' of a 21 to a 12... once you've tried a $3,000 bottle you lose those rose tinted glasses when you see a $300 bottle. Yes, there is always SOME level of bias, but I can honestly tell you that as you gain experience you are able to overcome a lot of that and just recognize what's good and what's meh regardless of price point. This is why you consistently see those of us who do reviews become more and more cynical. We start praising the entry level malts more because we realize more and more how much diminishing returns there are.

Ornamental Bay-leaves are not the same as the culinary ones and some are not even related but are called ‘Bay’ at garden centres and can be toxic.

Yep second that, Michter`s American is a distinctive, quality dram that any whiskey or bourbon drinker should try.

I can thing of a dozen Bourbon’s better at a lower price.

Perfect IMO. I've been hired to many tastings and quickly realized 4-8 people is the perfect size group so that everyone feels like they can be involved appropriately.

Thanks. What we settled on is this. 7 people each put in $50AUD every month and then every few months we buy two bottles which are normally outside our budget. Next tasting is Macallan 18 yo and a Glendronach 18yo. Everyone gets 4x 25ml drams to finish each bottle but we only have two from each bottle at whisky night and take the other two from each bottle home in small 100ml glass bottles to drink at our leisure. Means we are not hammered by the end of whisky night and not appreciating the whisky. Building a kitty so we can get a $1000 bottle for Christmas.

Did you buy it? Reportedly the batch 3 is a poor batch. Batch 2 being the best apparently. I have purchased 3 bottles of batch 2 and 1 of batch 4. I will skip batch 1 because batch 2 seems to be better.

not universally... Serious reviewers like SV or ESD enjoyed this whisky. I think we have to aknowledge the fact that most YT reviewers are not competent ones. They might be excellent marketeers, talented entertainers or simply very nice people, but they are not necessarily reliable reviewers.

This whisky is absolutely excellent, I'm doing a review of Batch 2 shortly. It's my favorite Ardbeg. Some whiskies are divisive though. Your best bet is to find reviewers who have similar taste to YOU and mostly agee with your own opinions on whiskies you've tried, then follow them. Ignore all the rest because if they disagree with you, then their opinions are useless to YOU.
