In this Video, We can clearly see the difference between the RAM usage of windows 11 and the Linux Operating system. #linux #windows #windows11 #ram #windowsvslinux #RAMusage #comparison
It is NOT a matter of ram usage ... but: in case of windows you are an OS "user" owned by MS while in case of Linux you are the OS "owner" who has the power, privacy and freedom
@@Просто_Иван what does that even mean, im actually using linux at this moment beacuse i need to learn it for a job, not that bad just a bit of a time sink but im cool with that since it will give me a return on investment with the job, debian with a window tile manager i3wm
After the latest updates, Windows 11 takes 3.8 GB at boot which stabilises to 3 GB idle. I got rid of it and put Fedora which use 1.45 GB at boot which stabilises to 1.2 GB.
@@aLiteralFan128 a potato PC with 16GB RAM...the only thing I'll say is that just because I have enough RAM doesn't mean I'll let the OS eat it all up.
I run Debian with i3wm. About 75mb mem usage. I never have to change anything about this setup and it does everything I need it to for the last 10 years, and it's incredibly efficient.
Just switched to mint Linux like 20 minutes ago… best decision ever. My cpu would clock out and my computer would be so delayed on windows. (I have 4gb ram btw) and after switching to mint Linux it’s super smooth and plus I love the interface. 11/10 would recommend
I still don't understand why people keep comparing ram usage between Windows and Linux . My old laptop has 10 GB of ram I have used Windows and Linux on this same laptop to do the same things: browse the internet, building simple django apps, building simple react native apps I didn't notice any speed advantage of Linux over Windows despite the lower ram usage LinkedIn still bogged down the processor and slowed down the Firefox browser in both OS I think ultimately it all comes down to the processor The same processor means the same speed
thats not a fair comperison because that distro is designed to be lite(thats its literal name 'linux lite') most distros' actually use around 1.5 gigs of ram
Windows use a lot of ram to give a smoother experience ram that isn't being used is a waste when you need it it will give it to you of course he still has its minimum requirements and linux lite clearly has lower requirements
@@Qohist It's called not using as much kernel menuconfig options enabled (and moduling them) and enabling LTO, PGO and -O3/-Ofast like some gentoo users do. This will reduce the size of the kernel and will become faster. Using dwl as a Window Manager btw.
@@CommentGuard717 Nah. From the arch wiki: A desktop environment (DE) is an implementation of the desktop metaphor made of a bundle of programs, which share a common graphical user interface (GUI). I don't an options GUI as I'm using dwl. I don't like title bars as they eat your space. And I don't need some games installed on my machine by default like Windows 7.
Linux is not for everyone, if you cannot afford to spend few hours of research on every issue that you will encounter, and you will encounter them, then don't switch.
@@BlueyTheProtogen there's much more support for windows for the simple reason that there are much more people using windows. And, in general, you'll run into much fewer problems on windows too.
@BeTechAware No what matter what you say windows is popular for the general user since it's more simple and easy to access. So you can say all you want that "Linux Is way better, just search up the issue blah blah blah" Yeah no since windows is more convenient than Linux. So the whole Linux is easy and blah blah is a ego trip and etc. No one wants to become a tech support just to daily drive it. On another topic I'll definitely want to try it in the future as a hobby to experience it myself.
@@GhostlyOnionthat would be true some years ago, but now some of linux's major distros are just as easy to use as windows, with the plus side that it's free, lightweight, and that you can really delve deep with stuff IF you are willing to spend some time understanding how it all works behind the scenes. Just because you spent years getting used to Windows' quirks doesn't mean there aren't better alternatives out there. Source: recently migrated to Linux (Ubuntu with GNOME) and didn't have ANY problem whatsoever, just by googling and following a single tutorial (with images)
Try to install linuxmint along side windows and try to use it for a weak till you understand the way linux work then tell me whether you changed your opinion or not (Window is the most good OS for gaming, other than that it is a very bad OS , so if you are a gammer do not ever think in going to linux) 😌
For an average user this is just a dick-measuring contest. Users do not care how the underlying OS is providing RAM to processes. Everyone knows Linux is superior in working with RAM.
@@hand-eye4517 "superior in every way"! Linux ain't even compatible with half the necessary software and half the games ain't even playable on Linux with proton and wine..many Emulator and Emulation isn't compatible with Linux. and this is the reason no one uses Linux, Windows is superior to Linux. where I live if i ask someone "Do you use windows 11 or Arch Linux", the answer will be common who tf- uses Linux!. Linux will never compete with Windows, windows is just better I mean way better than any Linux Distro.
@@CompuB1tWell, an Immutable Arch Linux. So you have to use flatpak (bloatpak with annoying sandbox stuff) if you want to install apps. You can set the system partion into write mode and use pacman but changes will get deleted when an update comes.
@@CompuB1t Yeah but, It can be considered like as a diferent distro, look EndeavourOs, It's %100 Arch (Not like Manjaro, I don't say i don't like it) same with Steam Os, Manjaro is even more different for the way it is made is like debian and ubuntu. :p
I use a kde environment and it uses nearly 1 gig while idling. And when I have a browser opened, a code environment that is built on top of chrome (eats a lot of ram), Spotify, discord, and I am compiling a huge 3 gig project. Linux uses only 4-5 gigs of ram. While windows 10 uses 4 gigs just to idle
@@chrishusky1464 I ask to compare with KDE or gnome because some windows user usually will comment "yes is use few ram because your desktop look like windows 98 and no animation"😅 Edited: i also use KDE as my main DE and of course i already modified and still didn't use much RAM when idle around 1,2 GB with all my application services(postgresql, Dropbox etc) running.
RAM not used is wasted RAM. But Linux for me every time. W11 has become spyware with all that telemetry and ads now too. You can turn most of it off, but still.
You don’t understand a what “available ram” vs “free ram”. If your system use nearly 80% doing nothing then OS problematic. There’s no such a thing as wasted RAM when the RAM is available for program allocations. Free ram = Ram that’s can’t be use by any program = Wasted memory space.
@soraaoixxthebluesky what you are saying is fundamentally wrong. You want the system to utilize all of your Ram. Unused ram is worthless. The way you are implying it is the used ram is ram that can't be used on something else. This is objectively wrong, and modern computers do not function like MS DOS. Your computer will constantly determine priorities and adjust its ram allocation accordingly. This is a good thing because ram is faster than pages and means more commonly used applications can be opened faster. Even if you open an intensive video game with a bunch of browser tabs in the background, the OS will put those tabs to sleep, pausing their scripts and even clawing back ram from them if it feels the game needs more to function at its best. There are real problems with Windows, but those problems are not its ability to handle ram allocation. Windows is arguably the best as this currently.
@@skuraschin Linux there is free (unused) ram, and ram that is used for buff/chache, which are together the available RAM. as long as there is free ram, it Will give you that if you don't have free ram, it will use ram, that was previously used for buff/cache if it has neither, it will probably kill a process to get more RAM. (probably the highest using non system one ore somethings like that
RAM not used is wasted RAM - yes, RAM should be used for cache which accelerate load time of Apps and processes. However, the values tested here is not cached RAM, but RAM in active use at idle - i.e. how much the OS use running no other Applications. Windows 11 is really bloated. My Windows 11 Home at idle takes up 3.5 GB. Windows 11 LTSC which excludes all bloatware and minimum telemetry, takes only 1.4 GB. That' show bloated Windows is.
Win 11 with ram only 2.6GB,. no way. With steam, firefox 1.2GB, last win upgrade on Asus Laptop F15, 2023 is ram 7.6GB used. Xubuntu 22.04 LTS only 1.8GB. It depends on Apps, OS.
Windows 11 typically uses just a bit over half of the existing ram when only task manager is opened and no other apps, this guy has 4gb on his win 11 machine
Considering how many variations of Linux there are, this kind of means nothing. KDE with tons of widgets and customizations compared to a minimal DWM install are going to vary wildly.
ya linux corre casi cualquier juego, aun no me e topado con uno que no lo corra, e corrido hasta the first decendant a 15fps con una grafica amd radeom r7 350x que ni de bromas debio correr ese juego
@BeTechAware I have Linux Mint at home and MacOS on my Laptop at work. Both are great operating systems. MacOS is years ahead of Linux Mint Cinnamon GUI, yet Linux is so efficient and lightweight that makes me love it more and more each day. My two servers are both Ubuntu, and Windows is dead for me.
@BeTechAware I mean, Linux is not good as windows lack of software & Games compatibility proton and wine is trash half the games won't even work..Lack of emulators and Emulation.. Windows and Mac is just better
@BeTechAware i have tried Arch Linux, Linux Mint Cinnamon, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie..and honestly Linux is just terrible I mean absolutely trash🚮... Windows 11 and Mac OS is way better than any Linux Distro.. this is the reason everyone prefer Windows and Mac over Linux any day.
because you have more ram windows fills up extra ram as preloading according to your max ram capacity so it'll use less when you have less capacity this is a really good thing that linux users refuse to understand windows is actually crazy good at handling ram and worry not, it clears the extra ram when you're gaming so you're not losing anything
windows you can't use apps on cause after boot all ram is full. linux you can't use apps on cause after boot ram is not full but there are no apps that normies want. they love their proprietary software crap.
@@Henry-sv3wv Im switching to linux cuz my lappy is so slow and windows constanly gets corrupter or sum reason (i dont have virusues, the only programms i have is Opera, Unity, Blender, Discord, Obs, Visual studio code, Roblox, Roblox studio.)
Windows 11 can run smoothly and function properly on my machine with 4 GB of RAM, while Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora with the GNOME DE seem to lag in performance.
The worst part about Windows is that... When you have 4 gb ram it uses 2-3gb for system if you have 8gb ram it uses 4-6 gb ram for system if you have 16gb ram it uses 8-10gb for system. this is because Window is a "big" OS what is does when you have 8gb ram then windows uses virtual ram useing the storage on youre pc. (That's why I use Atlas OS)
Windows takes much more RAM on my laptop but I have 4 times your RAM. Also, some Linux distros use much more RAM than your Windows, some equal to your Windows, and some distros use just a Fraction of the RAM your Linux uses. RAM usage is not bad as long as you still have enough RAM. It makes sense to predict the need of data from the main storage and preload these data into the RAM before the system needs these data. In addition, it makes sense to keep data in the RAM after a process is finished or terminated in favour of a new start of the program. It would be stupid to delete all temporary data from the browser after the user closes them when it's probably that the user starts the browser again. Modern OS are capable of clearing unnecessary RAM usage before it slows down the system. There's no performance in this behaviour but a lot of advantages. This is why Linux has support for RAM preload and some desktops like GNOME use predictive preloading by-default.
Im guessing your using 86x/32 bit, bcuz on 4GB ram win 11 leaves like 400MB free if that is 4GB of ram, windows will adjust how much ram it uses depending on how much ram you have, id say windows uses 9-24GB of ram if you inculd the pagefile
Its no meassurement really Linux will also cache disk content in RAM for quick access. and after you started a browser everything is going to hell anyway xD
However, it's a sad fact that Stallman has not received the recognition he deserves for his pioneering work. Often, the term "Linux" is used generically to refer to the GNU/Linux operating system, ignoring the GNU part of the system. This can be seen as an injustice to Stallman and the GNU project, which have significantly contributed to creating a computing environment based on software freedom and sharing. Therefore, it's important to give proper credit to Stallman and the GNU project for their crucial role in the modern computing ecosystem. If we were to call "GNU/Linux" just "Linux," then we should apply the same naming principle to the Android operating system for phones since it uses the Linux kernel. However, it should be noted that Android is much more than just a kernel; it is a complete operating system with a diverse software ecosystem and a wide range of components that go beyond the Linux kernel. This analogy underscores the importance of recognizing the significant contributions and complexity of operating systems in their naming. linux is improving fast though which is good, with a little tinkering you can get the majority of windows games to work with minimal performance loss, or sometimes (but rarely) even significantly better performance (minecraft for example can gain 50-100% performance from my experience but thats mainly due to java running faster on linux)
@@chickenbobbobba yeah I use Linux(Zorin OS16, Fedora38, Ubuntu23, GNOME OS Nightly) before. I know there are proton and wine but game that I often play(ROBLOX) didn't work with Linux at all, and unacceptable discord bug that dev never fixes.
Windows are gorgeous even though heavy; Linux is ugly and looks like OS in the last century from Median African countries whose users cannot afford that modern OS like Windows. I can’t think of any reason to use Linux which looks really inferior when you are not developers who are trying to avoid complexity.
Bruh, unused RAM is wasted RAM (Arch Wiki). Idk why people think it's the opposite. If you have a very old junk laptop or desktop go with Linux for smooth experience. But if you have decent spec'ed computer Windows will work buttery smoothly. It really depends on what type of hardware you're running. Both OS are for different needs.
I love os that is incapable of doing simple tasks in simple way. Would rather spend my brain trying to do a simple task. or or um yeah maybe use a distro that isn't even well optimized of course
No it's not you don't want your ram at 100 percent all the time, when you start using RU-vid or running games the PC will load and run smoother if you run out of ram while using a app it will use your storage as a ram buffer shoraging it's life cycle and can cuase your apps to crash please do some research before posting .
Kde, Gnome better UI than windows 10 and 11, but app, Game and driver porblem The most big problem for Linux Not evry device working on Linux, Old devices need old XP drivers😢
ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one of the best powerful things in linux is the ability to customize its appearance with every detail.. Some people with just one command can make the distro a piece of art.. There are many and many sites specialized just in giving 1000s of themes
I have 64 GB of RAM. If it won't be used to further increase performance then it's wasted. Using 300 MB instead of 3 GB means nothing to me. Windows reallocates cache memory as soon as another app needs more free memory than the available RAM. You see, trying to save even a few more bytes is an ancient style of programming. A good OS makes good use of a greater proportion of unused resources to serve much faster. Otherwise unused resources are, as you would guess, utterly useless.
If your computer doesn't have more than 4gb memory in 2023 than maybe you deserve a Linux box... And that's not a complement. My phone from 3 years ago has more than 4gb of ram. This video is silly.
@@777Nikolaus Well, that was a joke, but really, RAM isn't just going nowhere. RAM should help system be fast and stable, not just being unused and well, I don't think this video is valid comparison anyway.
No one denies that, unused ram is wasted ram, but I'd feel that it applies more to the ram you could use for the software you run Unused ram is wasted ram, I could set up my linux install to fully use all of my 4gb of ram for the system, and leave nothing for me, but then it'd become useless, wouldn't it
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. That's not entirely true Linux don't cache memory like windows do windows will free the memory from the cache or swap (not sure btw) if required by the system : so when we generally see it will show you more memory using than it is actually doing but anyway Linux is far superior to windows
Comparing Ram between both is like you are comparing linux to windows 😂 it doesn't matter if the ram usage is low windows still the winner even if you have 1 mb left in ram usage.
Nonsense, you can achieve the use of 8-10 GB of RAM only if you run a heavy game and a couple of other applications, I have 16 GB and use 5-6 GB, I did not feel a lack of RAM, if you need you to have almost no use of RAM, put either windows 7 Ultimate or windows 8 on 4GB of RAM behave adequately and consume about 1 GB, Yes, not the level of Linux, but 4 GB is already not enough, even if Linux costs
it ain't a fair fight though since windows uses superfetch which increases ram allocation to start programs faster on my system 64 gb ram it is about 9 gb with chrome open so test again without superfetch on windows but yeah it wil still not win from linux in ram usage not that i care again 64 gb ram i see no reason for a system to not use what is available
When it comes to the idle reserved usage of windows it's always a certain percentage of the ram you have but there is a minimum bottoming out point, such as if you had only four or six gigabytes of RAM than Windows chances are would idle at around 1 Gigabyte or more
your windows 11 ram usage is limited because u are using 4gb ram if u had 8gb, 11 used almost 4-5gb with all the bloatwares it's just microsoft ruining their own os
