Kelly you got my attention I'm 76-year-old professional drummer guitars my retirement Hobby Doobie Brothers almonds I grew up with it all thank you so much for keeping it alive do subscriber thank you
Great lesson..... I'm old enough to have seen the band play with Duane, Dickie, Greg, Butch, Jaimo and Berry.....they are the reason I play guitar today....what a band live....the best in the land.....thanks for keeping their shoes shined.....
My brother ran in the same circles as them. He was pretty good friends with Butch Trucks. My brother is 15 years older than I am and I’m 60 and he knew them back in 69. He knew them all including Duane.
Thanks for doing your part to keep this band in the hearts and minds and ears of people everywhere. Absolutely love the Fillmore East live album. Thanks for the lesson, have a good one!
I‘m 23 and discovered the allman brothers this year. Gotta say they have become my favorite band, love them even more Zeppelin and Black Sabbath now. I’m just a sucker for the blues I suppose. I learned blue sky, one way out, come and go blues and bougainvillea from Dickey Betts solo album, and made a huge step forward in my improvisation. Especially the major scale solos are just sublime. Soon I’ll focus on slide, but need a new guitar for that 😁
Thanks' for posting this. I'm sure like others, Dickey's passing has really reminded me what a unique player he was and has inspired me to learn more ABB.
Growing up in Georgia and seeing the Allman Bros for the first time in 1969, following their careers and playing many of their jam songs in my own little bands...I totally agree with you. My son, a fine guitarist, cut his teeth on the band, he teaches Music Production in HIgh School and makes it a point to introduce his students to the Brothers so we are doing our part!!
Great lesson! Thanks for posting. I also appreciated the commentary at the beginning, especially the part about the ABB not getting their due from the “classic rock” community. I did have a slightly different perspective to offer though. It’s not really accurate to say that the ABB never really had a resurgence. The post 89 Allman Bros were one of the top selling live bands of the Pollstar era and had several well received albums. Their set lists had old classics for sure, but were also heavily populated by songs from the post 89 period. They are, or were, popular with a younger crowd, but it was more with the jamband crowd, not necessarily the classic rock crowd. Their successor bands like Tedeschi Trucks Band and Govt Mule have done a great job of keeping their legacy alive.
I watched this video dozens of times @ 50%, 75%, 100% speed and finally got it! Your breakdown of each part made it possible. I can't thank you enough!
Hey Kelly...you missed the mark on one point here (very rare indeed!). But the fact is, the ABB were extremely popular with the younger "jam band" crowd throughout the 90's and 2000's. With Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge and Warren Haynes in the band, they were a force...and very popular, selling out the Beacon Theater many nights in a row up until about 2014. 👍
I'm with you brother. Growing up in the 60s and 70s I was listening to Zeppelin, Grand Funk Railroad and Black Sabbath. Once I heard ABB I was hooked for life. Elizabeth Reed, Les Brers In A Minor (I was playing bass at the time, Loved Barry Oakley), One way out, Trouble no more. Hell anything from their first few albums were garage band favorites. To be honest I never learned Ramblin Man or Midnight Rider . Don't really know why. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways.
Thanks for the lesson I have it down but still only playing at about 3/4 speed. Will get better with more practice. Have you ever worked on the ending solo yet?
LOLOLOLOLOL - that's like my wife - she actually hates what she calls the "raaahhh raaahhh waaaahhh waaaahh" part of a song - i.e - the guitar solo. And of course that's what I play and love and I am like "how do you not think (this or that solo) is sooooo cool"????
It might be the happy sounding Dickie Betts major pentatonic scale that she likes. Its hard to not get happy listening to his upbeat major scale tunes....
Blue Sky is one the most beautiful songs and one of my favorites to play. Learning that solo taught me everything I know about major pentatonic and a lot about harmonized double leads. Your wife and son together just can’t be wrong! Allman Brothers were an incredible force and an absolutely amazing band.
I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing the Almond Brothers band back in 1978 when I was 15 years old at the Fabulous Forum they played for more than three hours I remember Cher even came out and joined towards the end of the show!
Love that you're flying the Allman's flag man!! Great lesson and pre-amble! I'm a Duane Allman guy, but Dickie is one of the most sorely underrated guitarists in history. Pegasus from Enlightened Rogues is a beauty that would slide under the radar at home too no doubt
I agree with all you said about ABB. So does my 28yro daughter since she 10. Also, do you plan to do some Derek Trucks lessons? The man reinvented slid guitar.
we're still waitin' on the OUTRO solo! My birthday is coming up on the 19th and boy, a tutorial on the OUTRO solo would be a great gift to me that everyone can enjoy-arent those just the best kinds of birthday presents!
No way! Thats crazy! I don't think I have ever met another June 19th bday! Talk about "in good company!" I really appreciate that! I actually just watched your Cover video of the outro and I think I've almost got it minus the little slide part at the very end. Thanks again and I hope you have a very Happy Father's Day / Birthday Weekend!
I always loved this song when my dads group played it. I heard it in The Exorcist and i thought "That's perfect. That's the song i want to set the tone of all my movies." Like American Girl having that moment of levity in Silence of the Lambs.
You should play "little Martha" for your wife and children... Pure Duane & Dickey. It makes you wish it was a longer song, it's that good ! Thanx for the tut ! Oh, and have them listen to SRV's "Lenny". They will appreciate, and thank you for doing so. Sláinte
Excellent Video. Mr. Betts was my favourite guitar player growing up. I was lucky enough to see the Allman Brothers several times when they came up here to Toronto. Jamming with my high school buddies and my brother tomorrow night, and I want to play One Way Out and You Don't Love Me and Whipping Post.... and Rambling man. Thanks Kelly.
I met Gregg and Dickie about 12-15 years ago. I’m a huge fan, so much so that I bought two Hammonds and piano to pay tribute to Gregg. I’ve played guitar for almost 40 years and can play almost every song. Great video!
I was watching Sammy Davis, Jr. years ago on the Johnny Carson show and Johnny asked Sammy. What kind of music did he like and Sammy said he liked all kinds of music as long as it's good music. And that's been my Mantra ever since. Thanks for the video I just found your RU-vid channel and. Don't stop.
Great vid K! Someone told me, way back, that this was actually Les Dudek solo...i said well, then Les sounds more like Dickey Betts than...Dickey Betts!
Awesome! Best quote I think I ever read was by Duane on Jaimoe. I’ll paraphrase of course but when asked how they found Jaimoe, Duane said… Man there was this cat down in Mississippi that played so weird… we didn’t know if he was any good or not! Love it.
Kelly, thanks for this wonderful lesson. I will say though, that the lead, with the exception of that tasty blues note is indeed in the G maj scale pattern, if you use the G form of the G maj scale which occupies about the same fret span of the Emin pentatonic.
Hey dean, I love your lessons especially on Metallica and pink Floyd. I've been playing guitar for a few years but I don't know how to improvise because I've always hated the idea of having to memorise scales. is there any method you recommend or personally used to learn how to solo without tedious boring memorisations of scales?
I have been wrestling with understanding how to play Dickie Bett's solos for a long time and you're the first RU-vid instructor that has explained it so I could understand it. Thanks from Texas
When the band were asked in about 71 what their favourite music was they listed mainly jazz records like Miles, Coltrane and Herbie Hancock. You can hear this on their long jams on Fillmore East etc. Great video btw.
Such a good song, and such a good solo, listen to The Allman Brothers some already, but will definetly listen to more of their stuff after your recomendation
I have seen them 30 plus times and love them in every iteration. They played and wrote well from the 60s thru the 2000s (40 plus years of being at the top of their game. Any metal musician worth a damn would love them as every good guitar player digs the Allmans
Yes, I know that, but my point is that teenagers who DO find classic rock and the like, and gravitate towards it (my own daughter did this at 13), they are listening to band's like Zeppelin, Queen, Guns and roses, black Sabbath so on and so forth, but NOT the Allman Brothers.
I think both Duane and Dickey were session players before they formed the Band. Both were well-versed in Jazz and Blues. That's what (I think) makes their music sound so damned good. It's always got a really nice flow......
Duane was a session player, Dickey was not. Duane was more blues and R&B based with little exposure to jazz until the ABB formed. The jazz influence came from Jaimo and Dickey.
So true. To dislike the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. Could be more than reasonable grounds for divorce. Tell her she just squeaked by with her proper praise. But don't be so hard on the kid. 😮🤐😁Another awesome lesson. Let's get his numbers up, people!
Thanks mate! Was so funny yesterday with my six year old. We were out for a long drive and I just had to put Ramblin Man on repeat for about forty five minutes to keep him happy. He was memorizing the lyrics. By the end of it he was singing along. Really cute.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar Those memories of our kids are everything. Glad I had a video recorder in the 90's. My girls were so adorably entertaining. 👩👸😁
