I looked out into the black, inky expanse. The spots of light that dotted the universe millions, if not billions of miles away sparkled with an iridescent and comforting glow. The low rumble of my FTL engines lulled me into a sense of calm as my ship patrolled this quadrant at sublight speed. I glanced over to my right wing as my wingman rolled over the top of my canopy and waved. “Starlink, this is Space Boy Actual, are we cleared to RTB?” “Affirm Space Boy, no pirates on the scope today. Slow day, easy pay. Let’s spool up the FTLs and get outta here.” “Roger that SWACS returning to base, spooling FTLs,” with an easy tone I sent out the uplink and smiled, “Hey Justin, since this is our last flight on this tour why don’t you come along with me back to my place?” “Sounds good flight lead, punching in coords to the Sol System. See ya there,” Justin turned off his plasma visor and cocked his head with a smile and a thumbs up. A bright glow emanated from his engines before a burst of light sent his fighter past light speed back to Earth. I chuckled a bit and playfully gave chase as a few friendly beeps confirmed the power up of my FTL drives. The doppler effect of light whizzing past my cockpit would have been blinding if not for the automatic tinting of my own plasma visor. As I slipped out of FTL my radar pinged back. Justin was about five hundred meters away, high and to the right. The luminescent engines of his fighter flickered as he turned to dock onto the solar station. I saw his fighter disappear into one of the numerous airlocks and nodded to myself. I sent out another uplink to the station. “Space Boy Actual of the ARES PMC, requesting clearance to dock.” “Clearance granted Space Boy, proceed to airlock number three. Welcome back.” - *Three months earlier* “Hey there Space Boy. Moving through the galaxy again?” “Roxy, you know this puts bread on the table,” I gave her a soft sigh and a quick glance as she leaned up to the doorway, arms crossed. Her eyes gave off a sense of longing despite the grin on her face. Between two cybernetic fingers she nervously played with a bit of her flowing auburn hair as she walked towards me. “Don’t be a stranger now. Look, you know I get emotional every time you pack up and leave in your car. Off to fly again,” her tone hinted more… Nostalgia? From what I guessed. I don’t blame her, past the doorway was a framed photo of us standing beside an older model of star fighter, back when Roxy still had all her original limbs. I could tell by her behavior she wanted to come along too. “It’s okay, it’s only three months. I’ll be back. Okay?” “I know… I know… I just miss it is all,” Roxy let out a heavy sigh. I ran my fingers past her face to move away her hair. I gave her a warm smile and softly wrapped an arm underneath her armpit and moved her closer to me. Her chin rested gently onto my shoulder as I gave her comforting pats on her back, “Can you kiss me in the dark? I’m wanting you…” “Sure. SUSAN, garage lights off.” As the light flickered off we both held each other tightly before gently breaking off and walking towards the open entrance of the garage. We both gazed up into the night sky and saw the stars. The millions, if not billions, of tiny sparkling wonders of the universe out there waiting to be explored. The awe, the wonder, the adventure of it all. I know she misses it. Someday, we’ll fly back out again. One more hug, this time through her teary eyes, we leaned in close and met lips in a warm moment to share. - “Can you hear me through the dark? I’m calling you Space Boy!” My eyes lit up at the voice on my uplink as my fighter pressurized in the docking bay. As the crew prepared my ship for storage the cockpit canopy parted open as I jumped out of the fighter and happily ran to hangar bay. Roxy was right there to greet me at the terminal. “Rox!” I stopped right before I almost collided with her. She jumped into my arms as the crewmen around us clapped at our reunion. She led me away from the launch facilities and back into the commercial section of the spaceport. Now alone again, I finally had a chance to put down my bags and gave a sigh of relief, “Can you kiss me in the dark?” “You don’t linger enough… Don’t be a stranger, baby…”
