the only reason this interview is so "strange" is because you had an image about what Rammstein is and kept trying to have Flake confirm your thoughts. The questions were kind of repetitive and he was clearly getting annoyed.
Kitten Lyric I had the same impression that he was joking with the interviewer, I think I have seen Flake laughing as he realzied that he catched him. I mean, common, when Flake said, they want to help the kid to grow up, the coin must have been fallen.
Y'all aren't german and don't get the core idea of Rammstein, do you? Have you ever analysed one of the many songs? I get that it's fucking difficult for foreigners, but you may get a better understanding of Rammstein. They don't do shock rock. They are freedom.
@@nilsandresen9912 I don't think it's just whether you're German or not, I'm Australian and even I get that they're not out to shock people but just to be able to sing, talk and express themselves however they want. That means pushing the boundaries sometimes, but it's not just pushing them for the sake of pushing them.
@@nilsandresen9912finally someone explains it ! They grew up in East Germany, with the bare minimum and restrictions from Communism. When the wall came down they embraced freedom, that's what they Freedom of speech, mind, body and soul! ❤ Rammstein 4 ever ! Deutschland
This wouldn't have been "one of your weirdest interviews" had you not been trying to fit his band into a mould of what you think they are. Instead if you listened to what he was actually saying, you could have had one of your best interviews. Clearly he cares about art and self expression more than just trying to get reactions out of people for attention, which is why you trying to get him to admit to for the majority of this interview.
jumpmanhat Flake is very willing to express himself trough an interview... but you have to ask smart questions. you could see behind his sunglasses he was rolling his eyes with some of the stupid questions he got. if the interviewer did some research on the band and specially Flake ... hé should have known not to bring up media attention as he has clearly stated multiple times he hates multimedia and doesn't want to understand it as it takes away a lot of creativity.
That's exactly what I thought when I watched the video.. To know Rammstein you really need to go deeper and deeper in terms of art, music and expression... The worst part is that Flake gave him some opportunities to ask him more interesting questions.. but....
Maybe that's a side effect of not being able to understand their lyrics, in combination to being used to bands that only want to shock because of the outrage. I remember Flake saying, that explaining things only reduces the experience and impact something can have. That's why he doesn't watch trailers for movies or making of - documentaries. (-> Look up the "Sonne" making of - video on their channel, for that tidbit). Flake is an outstanding artist. They all are.
Exactly! If you go in with a preconceived and misinterpreted notion of the band and especially to Flake, you deserve what you get. I appreciate Flake for not getting defensive or explanatory and putting the guy in his place. It was a stupid interview premise to begin with.
I am 99 % sure, that when R+ was asked to o this, they just gathered up and said, how do we bullshit this as much as possible, and someone just went "let's send Flake", and everyone just laughed their ass of.
And this is why I love Rammstein. I had to pause this for a good few minutes until I’d finished laughing. I can’t believe how dumb these questions are and how blatantly Flake is trolling this guy. That aviator, choker and fake tattoo sleeve combo though. 😂😂
I know 😭 Flake's just sitting there telling this dude over and over that they do what they want and they grow on it but the interviewer just doesn't seem to understand
Flake is a class act, I've never heard of any ego problems in this band. They all seem like super, super genuine and wonderful people, despite all of their succes.
Idk this interview put me off. His effort to be as cool and nonreactive as possible seems as fake as those tattoo sleeves. I like Rammstein still but woah.
Kitten Lyric Hi I'm kinda new in the Rammstein fan base, and I wanted to know why is Richard called with these names sometimes, and what really happened during the Mutter era? 'cause I'm not really understanding the whole situation you know... 😂 So, if could explain me, it would be really great😄 Thank you so much. (Sorry if there's any mistake. I'm not a native English speaker)
Jordy M i wouldn’t actually say it’s trolling. What you’re seeing is a culture collision between an interviewer from a culture that desires superficial opportunities to be offended and a subject from a culture that doesn’t take itself too seriously while confusingly taking other aspects of life very seriously. He is actually being quite sincere. I don’t know if his books have been translated into English, but I’d recommend reading them as they might shed some light on him and the band.
I met this dude years ago in Madison WI while Rammstein was on the pledge of allegiance tour with Slipknot. Not a lick of English from him lol or he just didn't want to talk. He simply smiled at me, signed my beanie, patted me on my head, smiled, and walked away...I'll never forget him haha
they don't expect to please anybody, they just feel good when they do their art and never change their direction of music, they just do what they are capable of doing perfectly well and what they want...they also were lucky to work with great people, like Jacob Hellner (the producer of the albums), Jonas Akerlund, Jorn Heitmann and Zoran Bihac (the directors of some music videos)
This is what happens when you go into an interview with a member of Rammstein and the only Rammstein song you've ever heard is "Du Hast". Jesus that was painful.
That interview was NOT weird at all. Flake was very relaxed, open and sincere. I think the interviewer just didn't know all that much about the Band and -honestly - about music bands in general. It's just a fact.
Things like nudity and sex are controversial only to conservative or religious places like America and the UK. In Germany, nobody gives a fuck. They have bare titties in beer ads.
@@VampiraVonGhoulscout They almost only have these things like cannibal (Armin Weiss/ 'mein teil'), incest BDSM etc. in their lyrics. It's all about death, and sex, power. Disaster (Rammstein). And now with Lindemanns Ich hasse kinder... Give me a break. Even in the beginning Lindemann was already swinging a fake cock onstage, that had water or beer coming out. This is an easy(cheap) way to get attention . Not saying their music is bad. I have most of their music as well. But it starts to get boring. A bit too much of the same. Shock Rock for sure.
This genuinely seems like a prank by Rammstein. Flake doesn't have arm tattoos (you can see on his right arm how he's just wearing tattoo sleeves) and usually doesn't wear anything around the neck. Also, his chill laid-back demeanor as if he was some other cliche rockstar is so far away from how Flake appears in German interviews, where he is one of the funniest and most comedic persons I have ever seen. On a different occasion, for example, Flake read excerpts from his book on stage and his introduction to the audience itself was funnier than many standup comedy acts. Flake also recorded the audiobook of his book and reads it so childlike and silly which makes the text all the funnier. The only way that I can explain Flake's demeanor in this interview is that the entire band sat together and discussed how they can make this interview as absurd and ridiculous as possible :D
As a German myself, it's obvious to me that he didn't seem to need a translation himself. I'm actually wondering why he didn't answer in English as well ..
He totally rickrolled you on that Sam. They are fluent in english, Rammstein even have some songs translated to english by themselves. He and Till definally tricked you on that (Hell even his solo project Lindermann is all in english tongue). I've seen a lot of interviews from them and this is not the first time they pulled this one off, maybe it was to avoid interviews or just to fuck with you. Or maybe because you were in Germany, they felt like to just speak german.
I don't think it was done to fuck with him, but simply because some people far prefer to speak their first language as to respond to the questions as eloquently as possible. If some of that eloquence is lost in translation then I suppose that it's not as severe of a loss as not being able to find the best words in a limited or unpracticed second language. Especially in response to questions that are most likely going to get air time in a documentary film or television series.
That is why it is weird. The interviewer is asking dumb questions and asks similar questions with which have already been answered from his previous questions. This interviewer gave a generic and cringy interview. No substance at all!
That contrast between the interviewer asking eloquent and meaningful questions in English and Flake answering in this Berlin German accent, basically saying "We just want to do our fucking thing" the whole time😂. I liked the interview.
I was shocked at first and I immediately thought "Uh Flake, we've become naughty naughty badasses!! Wait... When did this happen?" And it took me like 5 minutes in which I posted a screenshot on Instagram Rammstein fandom asking WTF before realizing the arm was darker and it was a skintone sleeve 😂
the interview was awkward because the interviewer blatantly knew nothing about his subject matter due to assumptions he'd based on snippets he'd seen. is it any wonder Flake has a distaste for Western attitudes and language? This interviewer is just ignorant.
Ha ha. This is VERY Flake as I expected it might from what Sam says. He is quite old fashioned in some respects. You have to remember he grew up in communist East Germany. He was training to be a Doctor and his intelligence shows. choice was limited and in some aspects of life, things were more simple in some ways. He's the type of East German who sees the pros and cons of the old and new ways, like not being faced with as much choice. 'I don't have a computer' sums Flake up perfectly. :D I hope that gives some understanding and I've chosen the appropriate words in places.
Flake is giving very intelligent and thoughtful answers. Just because he didn’t say what everyone expected doesn’t make it a weird interview. Myself, I am tired of bands simply existing to shock people or that try to be overtly relevant. They are watered down replicas of a million before them. I think the beauty of Rammstein is that they TRULY don’t give a fuck. They do their thing and if they are happy that is what matters. True fans will see that. Fickle fans will love on to the next popular item. Bravo to Flake for the awesome interview. Also the real shock was in the interviewers voice when Flake said he doesn’t have a computer. Hahaha. Perfection.
It's strange cause the questions you kept making were pretty clear not the reality of Rammstein, that's not what Rammstein is but you really wanted it to be, so you became reptetitive and he became annoyed, the end.
It is what happens when a culturally stunted moron interviewer gets confronted by someone that is a grown-up. It is “weird” because it didn’t conform to his naive expectations and he doesn’t understand. Actually it is embarrassing to watch on behalf of the interviewer.
This does not paint the interviewer in a good light at all. There was absolutely nothing weird about this interview, other than the blinding ignorance of the interviewer. Flake's answers were brilliant, interesting and insightful. Well done to Flake for not losing patience with the mind-numbing, repetitive questions that he kept being asked so that the interviewer could get the answers he was clearly fishing for.
My first reaction, when I saw those tattoos, tinted glasses, choker, attitude: this ain't Flake, at all lmao, he's making fun of that shock rock label you tried to stick on them most definitely
Wintergreen he is making fun of the box, the interviewer wants him in! He is making fun of mainstream rock, where they all have tattoos and wear dark sunglasses.
i dont like the interviewer i kept waiting him to say "so what is like the meaning of life man, what does like life mean to you man...." like cmon its not as deep as you think, they do stuff cause they like it and its badass. I feel like flake kind of had that body language like i dunno its just cool..
Oooff 😬 This was a tough one to watch. The interviewer sounded like he was holding a job interview! 😆 Flake did a great job remaining polite and composed though. You could really feel the cringe through every little smirk he tried to hold back. It must be painful having to go through these uninspired, repetitive interviews with questions from people that don’t know the first thing about you and your music. 🤦🏼♀️
Every time I learn or see anything about Rammstein it makes me appreciate them even more. Yes their Pussy video was a viral hit but it's not just that. it's above all a great song. I think that separates them from most bands/groups. It's not one song, one gimmick that defines them, it's the whole Rammstein that makes Rammstein.
lol an american vs an east german. these two might as well have been from 2 different universes. the interviewer's concepts are being shattered and his mental world turned upside-down, none of the answers fits into any of the interviewer's preconceptions, i love it :D
I would love to see the extended interview with Till Lindemann. In the Metal Evolution interviews, Flake always felt more reserved, more evasive in his answers. Till came across way more straightforward and direct, and I would love to see what more he has to say on the matter, especially as a fan of Rammstein myself. I love you guys at BANGER films, so rewarding to be subscribed and to see what you put out. Keep it up \m/
The lack of understanding here is unreal from someone of your position. "if its not entertainment, what is it? Its freaking music dude, is the point of music lost on you? The messages, the art, the poetry? If you think Rammstein (which you cant even pronounce) is just a shock band for entertainments sake, they are completely lost on you. Move on
Because the interviewer keeps trying to press Rammstein into this mould of intentional and planned provocation (even though Rammstein have said in interviews that there is no real plan behind their provocation) and Flake keeps making this clear but the interviewer keeps kinda ingnoring it. What makes this interview funny for Rammstein's fans is that they know those are tattoo sleeves etc and that Flake is trolling the interviewer.
What an amazing interview. You can tell flake just gives no shits about trying to please anyone. Way to go flake for making this interviewer super uncomfortable haha
I feel a bit embarrassed for the interviewer. He is trying so hard to put Flake in a category but really, Flake is a category all of his own. I like that he doesn't have a computer.
Flake seems like a very strange person (I say that with the utmost respect) and he hates giving interviews, so he fucks around with the interviewers. I could've been way weirder. It's like he is playing the"Two truths, one lie" game and you have to figure out if he is serious or not. It's fucking strange really. Richard and Paul might've been less weird. Tough luck.
From the Bio of Flake I have read(nice book) he is a normal Person. A normal Family with one Child. Nothing shocking about him, just he play keyboard in the Band Rammstein. The weirdest on him is that he is a hypochondriac.
I'm wondering what happened after the interview. Like, did he stand up, grabbed a fur coat and left? Or thanked you for letting trolling you? Or you two never crossed a words after thanking each other? 🤔🤔🤔
“No, I don’t have a computer.” “You don’t have a computer??” “[in English] I’m to old for that” Has to be the most troll thing I’ve heard from a musician ever 😂😂
Nothing weird about the intervew. He gave honest answers. He doesn't care what the media or the public wants. And he doesn't want to be limited to categories. As a fellow (East) German living in the US, I feel people have expectations in me to be like them. But different cultures sometimes have different views on life and what's important. It's not weird to be different.
Flake hits something that was a MAJOR factor for me growing up in the 90s-00s. When you went to a concert, the lights went out, everyone screamed and it was totally breathtaking. Then you were here in this place with several thousand like-minded people for a few hours and it felt like “this is OURS”. I really hope kids still get that experience nowadays. It doesn’t necessarily have to be something as goofy as Til and Flake doing their “buck dich” routine circa 1998…but something that feels distinct and new for your generation, regardless.
You can tell Flake is fucking with him on account he is wearing fake sleeves and if the interviewer did a little research the giveaway would have been obvious since he would have found out Flake can speak English and didn't actually need a translator; also I think he found it amusing the interviewer tried to pigeonhole Rammstein as shock rock when he said a few times that they just like the music
So we won‘t talk about the tattoo sleeves he is hiding (again) with the ridiculous bracelet towards the end? His Alice Cooper necklace? Understanding every question in time but just responding (!) in a sloppy Berlin dialect to a translator who is def not a native speaker? No? Alright.
I'm newer to the band, but knew something was off about this interview with Flake, whose always more down to earth and chill. Dive into the comments and my suspicions confirmed.
WOW this is a real artist… an authentic artist… how they just create art and “don’t look at the outside world” is what has kept the band together for so many years, which is really extraordinary, they haven’t had a change of an integrant ever
This is still absolutely hilarious. It was really sad when the interviewer wanted Flake to say that the band is the best at something instead of just accepting Flakes point *facepalm*
Vörös Gellért over the years, flake has said that there’s nothing really he can do onstage as he’s just the keyboard player. Starting with the mutter tour, he started designing & using elaborate keyboard rigs to add to his onstage personality. The treadmill was first used during the lifad tour & featured twin Tesla coil towers that lit up & independent orbiting treadmill/keyboard stands.
Why? He's not even german ,so why do you mind? I've never heard a fuckin' German complaining about people pronouncing Rammstein wrong.. and i fucking live in Germany so calm the fuck down!
Humans are bizarre animals (cannibalistic, violent, childish, superstitious, sexually perverse, needy, malevolent, sentimental, full of phobias, etc.)... Rammstein doesn't seem odd if you start with that perspective. What other bands do is gloss over that reality and focus on just a couple themes... romance and breakups, or sex and attraction. I'm sure to Flake these questions seemed to be a bit immature.
Such a missed opportunity to ask him about his other side projects, how he writes his music... It's never a good idea to force somebody to admit something in an interview.
