I love how diverse Rammsteins music can be. On one hand you have stuff you typically expect from a metal band, and then you have songs like Nebel, Ohne Dich, or Zeit. Magnificent.

The song is about a woman who has breast cancer and will eventually die but refuses to tell her man about it as long as possible to not make him suffer more than it needs. NEBEL (mist) backwards: -> LEBEN (life)

I had not made the connection of Nebel/Leben, I just had looked at some point that Nebel can mean "fog", or "mist" or "haze" and associated that with the male character being old and having some form of dementia or similar and not recalling a last kiss. Nor had I made the connection with the breast cancer, your comments and others helped the pieces slide into to place, thank you. Now I wonder if it is indeed talking about the man perhaps having some form of memory issues, or if it is more that she has gone and his memories are filled with the images of her dying and he cannot access the happy, good memories, or the last time a kiss was "just" a kiss, it was loaded only with love, or lust, or desire, or a passion. He cannot recall the last kiss that wasn't tinged with sorrow or pain perhaps? Maybe the words she tried to tell that the wind stole, perhaps she was saying something like not undergoing any more treatment, and just live what time is left?

This song is not to be taken literal.. its about YOU , your birth, Your Mother and Father, the first chorus is about Your Birth you are born as you are kissed on your forehead .. during birth we all are kissed.. unless its a cesarian😅😅 the second chorus is about her illness i gather breast cancer 😢😢 and she is laying your head into his arms... and she will die... Mutter is an incredible Album and very beautiful.. only very good German speaking people will truly understand the double speak in this song, its a master peace.. the see its not an ocean its equivalent to more ..

regarding the wind stealing her words, in my little corner of the world colloquially that implies that the words were spoken but the wind is blowing away from the intended recipient taking those words with it. Could also imply a softness or maybe weakness in her voice, a sign of frailty or maybe of vulnerability?

I think they key phrase you over looked is "She carries the night (evening) in her breast (chest) and knows that she has to die". The translation was a bit off. Basically the women knows she will die bc/ she is terminally ill and has a hard time coming to terms with it and telling her husband. The end of the song brings it back to present where the widower is at the shore trying to remember the last kiss, but can't bc/ it was so long ago. Hence the title for the song, which other people already commented on.
