In 2001 Randall Richman was pulled over for a driving infraction. A sobriety test indicated that he was intoxicated, Randall decided to fight the charge in court. After an initial 10-2 mistrial the case was dismissed. It turns out that Randall was pulled over just after teaching a fire-eating class at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, he wasn't drunk, the chemical residue from his demonstration gave a false breath-alcohol reading. After the trial, Richman invited jurors to a free performance at the Magic Castle. One juror said she was impressed by the magician, “He’s a showman,” she said, “but I believed him.”
I would have to think they pulled him off the stage, deadened his mike, something because you know he would have said something about this barefoot stuff
This was truly beautiful Randall. The dollar bill levitation was top tier. You weren't monologuing, there was no snappy patter to lean on, you just let the magic moment take front and centre. Stunning. My daughter and I spent a lot of time over quarantine watching you in Magic and Beyond. Please, if you can, try to upload more of your performances here and we'll be sure to watch them.
@@MadScientist267 Actually you are wrong. Enclosing it in the glasses is intended to fool you, which it did, into thinking no string can be used (in truth its not a string but a wire but im not arguing about aesthetics) when in fact the "string" is positioned beyween the glasses. The same effect may occur when they use hoops (giant rings). The "string" can be run at an angle or even distorted. This can be seen when the hoop is passed most of the way through the object then reversed direction. They must reverse the direction because of the "string." But i suspect you are correct in one aspect, its not obvious. I gave the readers too much credit.
@@randallrichman4236 i know how you did the card trick,BUT im trying to guess how you did the dollar bill trick because i can think of 2 ways you did it.good job
Been watching a lot of Penn & Teller "Fool You" videos. So happy RU-vid sent me to your video tonight (June 2024). This was fantastic! Congratulations!
@@randallrichman4236 Alternate explanation? He and Ed were going out with Freddy to hit the strip clubs and the money was just coincidental because Freddy wanted to make it rain.
Randall Richman...Who is he? Where is he? I've never heard of him before or since his appearance on The Tonight Show. I've been a member of both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians for close to 25 years and have heard of or seen all of the great magicians out there. Some of them have even lectured for our local magic club of which Lance Burton and Mac King are active members. The two effects he performed, The Levitating/Floating Bill and the Forced Card (3 of Spades) to Impossible Location are both classic tricks in the world of magic. A great magician no doubt, but why haven't we seen more of him?
I think he got the string to sit on one glass and then put the other glass on top clamping the string between them. What I don't know how he got it to float out of the glass afterwards.
I'm sure Johnny knew the dollar bill/wine glass trick. It was obvious to folks who have seen the invisible string/Fishing line trick. He still kept quiet about it to give the man some street credit.
That is truly the difference between Carson and Letterman. Letterman would have called him out on it and try to embarrass..... even destroy him! But you are correct. Even though well executed, Johnny would have known the gimmick very well,
He obviously already had another three of spades held between his toes, but how he forced Johnny to pick that particular card is the real trick. A well conceived and executed "force" on his part.
@@AnimationArtWorld I bet there were some random cards on the top and bottom (or maybe even the bottom) and it was an odds game considering most people would pick a card from somewhere in the middle. So if all the middle cards were 3 of spades, it would work. Also, there was no reason for the magician to ask Johnny to tell him what card was picked, which leads me to believe he asked because he wanted to make sure the trick was going correctly. I wonder what plan B was if Johnny had picked another card.
@@BrandonHann You're forgetting something: Johnny shuffled the deck after choosing the card. Anything that the magician had set up would have been lost. Furthermore, if most of the cards were the 3 of spaces, it would have been highly probable that it would have appeared at the "bottom" of the deck, instead of the ace that appeared as the magician showed the deck to Johnny. And, he, literally, had nothing up his sleeve. However, he did see the back of Johnny's card, which could have had secret markers on it, but, it still begs the question: How did he get it to his foot?
It's a trick deck. Half the deck is full of the three of spades and they are stuck together with a normal card. The three of spades is always on the top so that is going to be the card someone chooses. I had that same trick deck myself when I was a kid except the "chosen card" was the ten of clubs.
@zekelucente9702 I enjoyed many evenings at the Magic Castle back then too, and at a couple of other venues in LA that offered live magic (I recall that Gladstone's on the PCH had magicians wandering from table to table) but I never saw Randall. We loved the close-up card magic in the small rooms as much or more than the stage stuff in the big theater. Randall's levitating dollar with Carson was amazing!
I bet “pure magic” brought this fine magician all over the world! Johnny was the best and had on the best. Have you gone on Mark Malkoff’s Johnny Carson Show Podcast? Excellent spot on Johnny!
I am new to card magic and slight of hand. I actually started practicing during the pandemic. I feel like I can make a guess of how the card trick was done. What's crazy is if I'm right or wrong it doesn''t matter, because this is the definition of mastery
I'm guessing that the card was somehow marked, as as soon as Johnny picked it at 4:10, his right hand goes under the table and his left does not come back up until 4:16. I believe this is where the duplicate 3 of spades is planted. Even so, an excellent trick as it is still fast and smooth. Johnny was an amateur magician, an amateur actor, an amateur drummer, but a masterful entertainer.
marking cards is too complicated for the trick, he forced the 3 of spades which makes sure that he doesn't have to fanagle with sleight of hand when loading the card (IE making sure he got the right one). And if you pause when he kicks the cards it's already in his toes. I think you are right with the duplicate card idea.
Johnny downplayed his skills, I assure you he was a master magician, tennis player and drummer. World class! Whatever he did he did very well. Talented, gifted
The real magician was the editor Look at 4:09 his hand are fishing in his pocket camera cuts away he pulls out his deck, left hand under the table and drops the duplicated 3 on the floor or magic string in his pant leg and puts the 3 on his foot out. around 414 look at cut edit 4:11. No way I could have know unless I cheated well clearly He knew the card we never saw the 49 3 of spades in the deck or marked. We all heard him say in his teeth so we would focus there but the his feet so kn one would see it in his toes when kicking
That dollar trick was done with magnets. It's simular to the floating cigarette trick. The 3 of spades was already in his hands when he threw the deck up, then he slipeed it in between his toes. Just a little Ralph Malph for ya!!
The dollar bill trick with the wine glasses is very simple. He attached an invisible string to the dollar bill with a small dab of wax he had in his hand. The other part of the string was attached to his ear. I have done similar tricks myself with this method.
If I need to guess the first one used magnetic liquid that the glasses were rubbed with. And when he wrinkled the bill he put some of the lotion on it with his hands. It's transparent so we can't see it. (That's why he did it and not Johnny) As for the second one, the trick was in the selection. The cards were made in a way that only the 3 of spades will be selected by Johnny. And, of-course it was already in his leg before the kick. Any other thoughts ?
REGARDING THE CARD TRICK, A SPLIT SECOND EDIT OCCURS AT ABOUT 4:10. JUST BEFORE CARSON PUTS THE #3 CARD BACK IN THE DECK, ANOTHER SLIGHT EDIT CLIP OCCURRED, VERY HARD TO DETECT. SOMETHING FISHY WENT ON THEN. BUT THESE SHOWS WERE AIRED LIVE, BUT WERE LATER EDITED IF NECESSARY, FOR WHATEVER REASONS THAT WERE DETERMINED BY THE PRODUCERS. THE MAGICIAN WALKED OUT IN DRESS SHOES, BUT WAS ABLE TO SLIP OUT THE SHOE ON HIS FOOT THAT WAS GRIPPING THE CARD, WITHOUT BEING DETECTED. WHATEVER WENT ON UNDER THE TABLE DURING THIS TRICK IS THE SECRET TO THE TRICK.
It's funny in high definition and the studio light reflection you can see the magicians string he uses. But this still takes alot of practice and skill
@@drewsquickfix Oh, I think I see it now. Coming off the left side of the crumpled bill, about 2/3 of the way up and extending out from the bill at about a 10 o'clock position. It's visible for about 11 frames. Thanks. Still an amazing trick though, isn't it? The skill in surreptitiously getting the bill entangled in the strings, and even just the engineering of where the strings have to be to be able to cause the bill to travel the paths that it does.
@@MadScientist267 Well thank you for acknowledging the genius of seeing this. Fight with someone else. You are So triggered by someone else's view that does not agree with yours. Funny.
@@MadScientist267 Pressing two glasses together? Why would you think a string couldn’t ‘survive this? Try pressing two glasses over a sewing thread, the thread will survive. Have you ever used this sort of thread? Magicians rarely do anything without a reason. After rolling up his sleeves why did he take out the pack of cards? Maybe he needed that pack on the table during the trick?
