That's debatable in the sense that they've been trying to find a happy medium between lightning bolt and shock since forever and shock ain't it so they've done shock with something extra since basically when shock was printed to try and find that happy medium Lightning strike on the other hand....

I just now realise thats why shocklands are called shocklands, because they make you lose 2 life. Damn that took long for me to get that. I mean, I know they where called shock because you lose life. But I did not make the link that you lose 2 life like with the card shock

I feel it kinda fitting that my time with magic was bookended by getting into it just as Shock was fully normalized and dropping from the scene just as Cancel was released.

One of my favorite factoids about shock is that it was a common released in the same set as the uncommon break open and outclasses it in basically every way. Two damage is enough to take down morph creatures, and if they use a card to flip it or boost it, you still probably did better than break open would’ve, and its even usable on non-facedowns, and it costs less

Seems fitting for shock to return again in Karlov Manor with the return of face down 2/2’s. It’ll be interesting to see how many more years of design until shock is limited unplayable, but as of right now it’s still a top draft pick.

@@empty5013 I was gonna say, it'd want some kind of way to bypass Disguise's Ward effect, Can't Be Countered works, hell even a condition like "Can't be Countered if targeting a face-down card" if they don't wanna just give people an unconditional gun

Shock is one of my favorite cards of all time because I started playing with the 2017 intro decks and shock would solve like all of my problems remove a blocked burn for 2 more damage for the win, kill an attacker to save my life, it did everything.

Seems less and less like creatures are being defined as good or bad based on the played burn spells, and burn spells are more defined as good or bad based on whether they can get one specific threat off the table (Let's say that the magic number is currently 5)

My first time playing mtg was during Arena's open beta, where i played a lot runaway steamkin mono-red featuring, you guessed it, shock! What a time it was! Maybe nexus of fate was a bit problematic, but overall fair metagame, right before FIRE design

Lightning bolt was part of a cycle; shock isn't. It would be interesting to see what the other cards in this cycle would be. Opportunity kinda fits

I'm sad shock is de facto because lightning bolt is such a great card both power and name wise i get it, bolt is too good, its unhealthy, but i love it so much
