Cracks propagate where there's a sharp angle, so realistically a scallop repair like this is a lot better choice than drilling the end (and a much shallower, smoother repair better than this for not breaking again.)

This is correct... The larger, scallop style cutout offers less chance for a crack to form.

if it's not inside the bell (keyhole is the terminology for it), you can take a drill to it (start with a small bit, maybe 1/8 inch or smaller), drill on both ends of the crack (to stop it from spreading further), then expand those holes to about 1/4 inch or so, then take a grinder (like the one in this video), and open up the spot between the holes where the crack is, so the surfaces around the crack don't touch each other; you should have an oval-ish shaped hole in there (should almost look like the zildjian EFX vented cymbal). Then after that, sand down the burrs and rough edges to prevent cutting yourself, and hope like hell your stick doesn't get caught in the hole haha.

There are only a couple of options for doing this kind of repair successfully. I will be investigating this work soon with the help of some experts on the subject.

There's always risks of new cracks happening in cymbals, regardless of repairs being done. However, if you have a crack, and you address it immediately, that will at least extend the life of the cymbal for a few weeks / months, depending on how often you play it, and how good / bad your technique is. Another big thing to keep from breaking cymbals too much, is to use the "sweep" technique on your cymbals. It gets your cymbals to full volume quicker, and reduces the stress on the cymbal, since the vibration is going around the entire cymbal, instead of fighting against itself and dying out when it gets up to and past the bell. Also, keep your cracked / low end cymbals for practice, and get a nice set for shows. Trust me, you'll thank yourself for this many times over. I play absolutely awful cymbals at practice, and have a full paiste setup for my live set. The difference is incredible, and saves me money and heartache.
