15 year old “Randy California” played with Jimi Hendrix in New Your for the summer of 1966. He later formed 70’s rock group Spirit. -- Randy California drowned in the Pacific Ocean in 1997 at the age of 45 while rescuing his 12-year-old son Quinn from a rip current near his mother's home at Molokai, Hawaii. He managed to push Quinn (who survived) toward the shore. [from Wiki]

I remeber their first album "Fresh Garbage" and saw them live several times. One of the very greatest rock bands of the 60s and early 70s. I miss Randy too. RIP.

Hearing Randy sing it like this live and comparing it to the memory that I have from Dr Sardonicus, this was his own song. Something he could play with a guitar by himself. What an incredible talent.

One of the greatest flat top jams ever! The composition is unparalleled with regards to any perceived similarities anywhere in history. Note Ed is keeping time with his head & right thumb. RIP RC! Edit: spelling ------------ Scotty...you REALLY, REALLY nailed this...Jay & Mark's parts are right there (in your HANDS)....and it's unplugged...no dub.... I saw Spirit at a sma bar in Imperial Beach, they were great, and signed one of their albums for me.

I was born after my time. I discovered Spirit in College when I worked at a used record store back in the late 80's. I could pull out any record I wanted to and play it. I discovered a lot of music that way. Ended up buying their first 4 albums. I have the Box CD set now. I've been listening to it the last few mornings on my morning run. Neat to see them playing this. Always one of my favorites of theirs.

Remember my first high school love telling me we had to break up and this song came up a few seconds later while we were dancing. We were 15 years old. Her father didn’t approve of me because I wasn’t the same pedigree. She was crying very badly and we were heartbroken. We still ended up seeing each other, sneaking around in spite of his disapproval and as they say: the rest was history.
