Hi Randy just found your channel. I'm from Australia and am amazed at the public land hunting you guys can do..In Australia there is no public land hunting and all shooting has to be done on private land. Don't give up the public land guys once it's gone it's to late.
Hey Randy.. just an European tip from Denmark!!.. when you are finish boiling the skull.. instead of skraping of the meat, brain an stuff. Use an high pressure hose/flusher?? Much faster, and no, it does not damage the skull.... Thank for all your great videos,,, gives joy all over the world!!!!
Yes, we often do that, as I explained on comments below. In this instance, we did not have time to take to a pressure washer and we know not all people have access to a washer, so we used a garden hose, something we felt most people have access to. Thanks for the helpful comment and thanks for watching.
I just did this, but didn't use Dawn just baking soda. I then let it boil for 4 hours then removed all the extras as you did. I used super glue in minor cracks. I then used blonde hair die. I mixed it up and spread it all over let it set for a few hours and removed it was so white it was crazy. if you want it whiter apply a second coat. I had never done it before and purchased everything but the burner, less than $60 to do it the first time. My next one will only cost me the die and baking soda. Thanks Randy for all the cool thing you share with us. You're an awesome person.
Glad it worked for you. Once the water reaches a high temps, turn it down to a simmer and you will have fewer cracks. If you have access to one, a pressure washer will increase the removal of old tissue better than a garden hose.
How did you know I didn't turn it down ....lol your right it was really brittle and flaky, but with the super glue it came out great. Finished product. It's not a monster, but we don't eat horns in my house! _lh3.googleusercontent.com/GGHdGvpN211Se2Vx5tDn265X0kJjYU1KKBSYpoX1nRILVryPHbpxRVkQ720fGE5o9uxYaE6e6A_
I have also started using a pressure washer to remove the bulk of the meat and brains after boiling. Have done 4 that way now and does a great job in a fraction of the time. Doesn't hurt the bone at all as long as the pressure isn't to high. Kind of messy though.
Agreed. We did not have time to do that in between road trips, so we used the garden hose. I have even used a car wash. Get some funny looks when doing that. Thanks for watching.
randy, one question about the process....are you actually "boiling" the skull for a few hours, or are you bringing the water to a boil and then bringing the temp down and simmering the skull for a few hours. I don't want to damage the skull by doing it incorrectly, and I just want to make sure I have this process down before trying this method. I used to have the beetles, and did some whitetails that way, but have never tried this method. I no longer maintain the beetle colony, and have an elk skull I need to do. Please clarify! And thanks for posting this video.
Yup. Get to a boil so temp is there, but turn it down to a slow simmer otherwise you will be picking up pieces of the bones that cannot withstand long exposure to the temps and pressures of a full boil.
When you were hosing the skull down, it looked like some teeth had fallen out, but were replaced later. Any special tips or just superglue? Awesome and very helpful video!
So I had this done on my first elk hunt and have an issue now that I have it home. there appears to be some matter left in the nasal cavities maybe, best area to reach it from is the nasal passages. It stinks like hell and I think it needs to be removed. Any secrets or techniques to get this greenish colored matter out or can I re-boil it?? It was whitened! Is there something I can spray on the matter to kill it or make it dry out faster to get rid of the smell?
Re boil it. Stick a pressure washer in the cavity and blow away everything that is not bone. You can also use long noose foresepts to reach in and grab anything that is hard to get with the pressure washer.
Simmering with dawn soap and baking powder and pressure washers. Never do a rolling boil it will crack the skull and loosens all the teeth. Takes a bit longer but it comes out great and the pressure washer saves a pile of scraping.
Yup. We usually do that, but did not have time or access to a power washer, so we figured everyone would have access to a garden hose. Thanks for watching.
Possibly the absolute worst way to do a euro mount. High heat will damage bone everytime, and they will eventually look terrible. Maceration or beetles, full degreasing, whitening, and then sealing is the best way for a product that will absolutely last forever and look as good 30 yrs down the road as it did on day one.
