It's a song about God's love, in my opinion. The Farmer and The Teacher and The Preacher were ready to go because they already had their legacies to live to the world. God didn't take The Hooker because she wasn't ready yet. She changed her life and ended up raising a son who loved God.

This was Randy's last #1 country hit in 2002, and it even reached the top 40 U.S. pop chart. It won the Country Music Association's Song of the Year in 2003 and a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association for Country Song of the Year the following year. Great song and reaction!

This song always makes me cry. No one could deliver it like Randy Travis. It touches me so deeply because of my sister. She wasn't in a wreck. But she was in a horendous situation as a kid until her teens when he came back and started it again. I was just a child. She begged me not to tell because he convinced her Mama would blame her. At 18 she snuck away with a man who abandoned her in Atlanta. Due to what she had endured she believed being a prositute was all she was worth. For 10 years I heard my Mama cry and pray most of the night at the kitchen table. I couldn't break her heart more by telling her why my sister was doing this. Then a man saw her limping down the road. He took her to the hospital. Her foot was badly burned. He visited her every day. He was a man studying to be a minister. He saved her life in so many ways. They married and had two boys then a girl. Just before he graduated from divinity school ha got liver cancer and died. She had been going to college as well. But in her older age her mind has gone back to the abuse. No one can talk to her. She just rants and we try to have other conversations but she just can't. It's heartbreaking. Her kids take care of her. I live in Tennessee and she's in Oklahoma. We don't get to see each other. The hardest part for me is she is now the only one of us 5 girls who speaks to her abuser. I think that is what keeps her mind so hurt. Anyway. She too was saved by a man with a Bible in his hands. I will forever be greatful to him. Her abuser was/is ( even though they are states apart) is one of our two brothers. I forgive him one day then I take it back a while later. It's also hard to forgive the verbal abuse he heaped on our Mama after she was sick with Parkinsons. It was bad before but then got worse. She may not have seen what was happening but she loved all seven of us with her whole heart. She didn't forgive herself. She passed away carrying his sins. So this is a story of redemption and pain. Hopefully one day he will truely change. Maybe one day I can forgive him and not take it back. Well on a lighter note I gotta get ready to go to my oldest daughters with my grandson to watch the super bowl. Happy Sunday y'all !

Thank you again Montauk Ed for another outstanding request. I hadn't heard this one in a long long time, and man it hit me with a punch I hadn't expected. Randy is one the greatest of all time - imho. Thanks Don for the excellent reaction and the deserved rating!

You are 100% correct. I'm an atheist and this is one of the songs I keep coming back to, just to remind me of what we're all aiming for in this life and any subsequent life after, even if that life is only what has been left behind.

Don thanks for your reaction and Ed thank you so much for your request. As I get on in years I find myself reflecting on this thing we ride through called life. As Randy so eloquently states through his lyrics is that when we leave this earth we leave behind our “works” so to speak, things that folks will remember as to how we lived our lives…… However more importantly the message that he is also delivering is that none of us are above redemption and we as people need to remember this prior to judging another persons life situation. So often we have the tendency to look down on some one (the Hooker for example) and judge them as un redeemable, nothing could be further from the truth. Again Don thanks to both you and Ed for an old classic that grounds me every time I hear it.

I'm glad you paid attention to the story. I've watched so many people react to this, who don't catch on to the hooker being the preacher's mother. This is really not religious at all (Even though Randy does a lot of gospel). Being from NJ, you might not know that it's customary for families to put a cross in the ground, on the side of a road, where a loved one has died in a car accident. Those crosses are respected by all that pass them.

@darrinlindsey Oh yes, we do the same thing up here, especially if a LEO passes away in the line of duty. Some crosses and mini-memorials have been in place for decades.

I knew it would be highly rated, but I never expect a 10. I really can't believe you never reacted to this song, but am glad Ed made it possible for you to do it now. Even though it came well after the peak of Randy's career, it is quite possibly now his best known song and won Song of the Year awards both in country and gospel.

The timbre of his rich baritone voice is unparalleled. My favorite Randy Travis songs are Reasons I Cheat; Promises; Take Another Swing At Me; This is Me; Look Heart, No Hands; Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man; That’s Where I Draw the Line; I Told You So; The Box; He Walked On Water; Three Wooden Crosses; More Life; Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart; It’s Just a Matter of Time; On the Other Hand; and Forever and Ever Amen.

Another great reaction, my friend. Don, I haven't been watching much due to a change in jobs, but I have another video request if I may. It's a song by Patty Lovelace called How Can I Help You Say Goodbye. I've listened to that song countless times over the years, and it came on the radio yesterday. It was the first time I actually heard it. Low key one of the greatest country songs ever!!! As usual, I'll be enjoying your vids and keep my fingers crossed that you get to it.

Cool story, when I was a kid this song was popular on radio. On the way to my grandpas house, at a country highway intersection, there were 3 wooden crosses on the right side of the highway, and I remember vividly this song playing at least two different times as we passed those crosses. We often went out there on Sundays.

Thank you Ed for this great request. I love this song. Good message in this song. Very fitting that this is the first song I hear when I got home from church. The song was written by Doug Johnson and not someone's story. The 3 crosses represent the crucifixion of christ Thanks Don for your reaction. Can't believe you never heard this, you must live in an underground bunker 🤣🤣🤣🤣😁😁😁😁

“It’s not what you take, but what you leave behind you” is supposed to make you think the Hooker, who was presumed dead, did not deserve a cross because of how she lived her life. Yet, the twist is she didn’t die. Then passing her experience to her son, reverts back to “What you leave behind”.
