I see this film really differently. Its intercuts between the freedom struggle and modern day corruption show that when the enemy is this external occupying force, change is easier to incite but when it’s hidden in plain sight, when it exists in every structure of governance a fiery passionate youth is going to fail and end up the terrorist or the enemy themselves. Impulsive action is not going to work and we as a society are not ready to put into motion the slow process of change.
Absolutely! The tragedy shown was more like a cautionary tale. It prompted you to think and reflect, it was wrong but who is accountable. The parallels between colonial revolution and anti-corruption movement was spot on. A movie where good for nothing college kids can challenge the high powers in the government, albeit in a crazy and self destructive way, is an idea that no one is above the truth. No power is absolute. It levelled the playing field in some way. I just had a rewatch of the movie and I think it still holds. Life is random and chaotic.
I think this movie has done a lot to change the political awareness of its youth in and around the time 2006/7. It was the Anna before the Anna. Sometimes I feel this more real then the Anna movement.
Yeah sure they raided a radio station to make their point felt across to the public, but they never claimed to solve the country's corruption malaise. They were simply starting something, giving the rotting, self-serving system a shake-up so desperately needed. The way they did it wasn't the smartest, but definitely in tune with the rest of the film. It _was_ building up to a climax like that. Who knows, maybe the combination of the grief and blatant callousness surrounding their friend's death in the air-crash and the fact that they had just portrayed freedom-fighters in a film, was just about enough to snap something inside them. Worked for me. And the callers to the radio programme didn't sound fake to me either. P.S. Agree with Sukhi's lack of backstory though. Btw too little mention of Rahman's soundtrack, which I feel is one of his grandest.
Faults can be found from any blockbuster movies after they are seen again after many years.. Rang De Basanti is no exception. People loved the movie when it was released in 2006 and people still love it today also. Instead of appreciating the movie most of the time you were bashing it. The movie was hit due to some reasons. So pls don't bash the movie just for sake of bashing it.
It happens when we watch a movie third or fourth time, our critical thoughts overpower over movie's magic. But I disagree with you. Every present time movie is made seeing the present scenarios, and obviously, the world has changed a lot in the last 16 years, so some of the scenes may look silly in today's context. Although RDB doesn't give reliable solutions to the problems we are facing; but it pushes us to ask questions for sure. Also, the first and foremost duty of a film is to entertain, which it does.
Shakti... With Karishma kapoor and Nana Pathekar... If nana is cancelled after what he did then I would suggest revisit kabhi alvida na kehna.. There is so much to talk about toxic relationship there and discussion whether Karan Johar glorified adultery or not... Because I think he did not.. When I was watching this for the second time as 7th standard kid, my sisters were very angry with.. But even as a child found the movie interesting barring all the unnecessary comedy, which now I feel like was not required but as child I was laughing hard
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. I would highly recommend you to revisit your review of Marriage Story and see how much you can relate to it while watching KANK.
Thank you Sucharita. Rang De Basanti even with some flaws was iconic and pathbreaking. Also strongly recommended: Vinit Mesram's video essay on Rang De Basanti on his channel Cinema Beyond Entertainment.
Thanks for doing this, Sucharita. I have watched this film 3 times at different stages of my own maturity, first of which was in a theater when I was 15. Each time I have felt something I didn’t feel before. Such movies, as much as they are a product of their times, are also trailblazers that propel the ‘wheel of time’ you mentioned. Yes, the choices the characters made weren’t the smartest, but it did teach us that being indifferent to things happening around you shouldn’t be an option. That there is a certain amount of virtue in being a rebel and questioning authority. That it’s ok the feel a sense of angst, but it needs to be channeled more constructively than what the characters decided. And the poor choices are what leads to this ending as a tragedy, a cautionary tale. Lovely video, please keep doing more of these!
It was a story right ? A person can chose any path. u are 70 now does not mean youth will not behave like youth. Suchitra Tyagi totally failed at it so did your comment.
Enjoyed this analysis so much!! Took me back to when I saw RDB as a teenager and definitely felt caught up in the emotions to ignore the path taken by the lead characters in the end.
Sucharita is trying to sound smart, it did make sense to the story. Sid father was involved in aircraft deal so Sid killed him because of that reason. And they want to make an example. movement starts with small incidents. If you see the entire Radio scene you'll understand they never claimed that they want to end corruption by doing this, but want to make an statment that we youth can change this country by adding something by each.
@@Ismudassir agreed. She also says she is not so convinced that just by playing roles in a documentary makes them motivated and emphatic to do what they did. On the contrary, I feel its extremely natural that they were outraged by their friends death and the unjust consequences, that they got inspired by the story they were so closely associated. Sucharita, you totally missed the point of the movie and why there is this movie-within-movie. Think less dear.
Sometimes I don't think even the filmmakers realise the subtle commentary that their script is making, but she points it out in such a brilliant way! Makes you watch the same movie in such a different lens
I was in school when i watched first Rang de Basanti. After 10 yrs i watched it again.. Oh man... I shocked two days that wht i have watched.. This is great Tu bin bataye Luka chupi are still in my play list
Review was bad..the movie was revolutionary then and now..so please..u were rlking about the ending..how would u have directed it..just think about it..try to fathom what the story was saying..
Which are the scenes depict this Anupama? Please elaborate. Because I never found any sorts of what she said out loud 🙁. Thank you and hoping a revert @Anupama Rajkumar. Have a great evening 😌
@@saurav5177 It's never said out loud. It is in Karan's eyes or how he is around Sonia. You should especially revisit the scene when Ajay proposes Sonia
Good lord! Fantastic analysis. You made me think of the movie and so much more. Great thoughts put forth. I really want to watch this again now. And no, it couldn't be made now. We are too sensitive as a nation in every way.
I don't agree. I really loved the movie yes has it had its too many flows but was not only was it entertaining and had a strong message that no country is perfect new generation has to get into system and make it better
This review is exactly what I had thought it would be except interesting. The views are so personal and so one sided that it not just crosses into unrelatable but also nihilistic. This person has never seen Hindi Film Industry in good light as opposed to her reviews of English films. I really wish there was at least a minute worth of glass half full segment in this highly critical and arrogance-laced review. No wonder it's called a "not a movie review" And I agree when you say "I am not going to be reviewing" Because you shouldn't!!!
I think you are projecting at this point. She did point out the marvellousness of editing, cinematography. Maybe you have mistakenly missed out on that.
I don't think her review is "arrogance-laced" at all. I love 'Rang De Basanti' but you have to admit that the film is a little problematic. Just because someone critiques a film does not mean they don't like it or it shouldn't be critically analyzed. She clearly stated what she liked about the film and which aspects of it have not aged well.
@@leewhys78 really problematic? It did not glorify that. Even in the end they admit path taken by them is wrong. This is not movie reveiw at all. Its streight up out of context bashing.
Hey Sucharita, I find the hindsight reviews truly fascinating. Would love it if you would review one of my all time favorites - 1942, A love story. The songs are beyond a doubt still very melodious, but does the story and writing still resonate ?
Why do you want Suchitra to review it ? did you like it ? then live with it . Did u not like it ? live with it. Why u want Suchitra edition on it ? What if Suchitra has no sense for Cinematography , love and great music .. she will make it a hell for you. Why you want it ? Suchitra is not the last word in Cinema . No way. She is not even the first.
What is your purpose of talking about this film? I mean anything that you said does it even have relevance. Jabardasti ka content dalne k liye kuch bolna hai
Know the cause why director would have made this film.. Towards the end of the film We are left with the question that what we could do for the country. Helpless Obviously some of us will frget it n get back to life But it seeds certain feeling certain questions right.
Sucharita, being a critic doesnt mean you have to find issues with the movie, like 'you have to'. The taking over the radio station and telling everyone what is good and what is bad, wasnt some kind of quick fix for the movie's ending, and definitely wasn't a final solution for their problems and they totally knew that. That was just what they could do in the last hour. Maybe one of the movies best scene but you guys want to find flaw in everything native,.
Very interesting points you made ...point that I think think about benefits of the film but it did hit me as to the current scenario that existed at the time...to me just pointed out the fact that something needed to be done
Oh shutup!!!! Siddharth's hatred towards his father was shown from the first scene. He blamed his father for his mother's death and he knew the kind of corruption his father was involved and that's the reason he never respected his father. Suki was a feeble character right from the beginning of the movie. All of us have that friend in our friend circle who is always horny and never make sense. It sparks his fear when things go haywire because he is so unsettled. I can go on explaining the character arc of each and every character but it's no point. This movie is still relevant after 16 years, when we hear incidents like lakhimpur or Jamia milia or jnu. What other climax would you have preferred! A happy ending? It was a call for "koi bhi system perfect nhi hota hume banana padhta hai" and it was the most intelligent way to end the movie. My request to you is, please don't sit with an agenda while reviewing movies. Wish you a speedy recovery from covid.
I think Siddharth (massively crush on till date), Sharma JOSHI and Kunal Kapoor were brilliantly cast and are just 🔥 on screen. (P.S. Madhavan was cute but he’s giving Problematic Dad Vibes atm)
Rang de basanti challenged the status quo of that time. Clearly talking about the problem of corruption and communalism to some extent. Today movies are pandering to status quo, to establishment. It would be really hard to make a movie like rang de basanti in today's political climate. Its not even just the wide and rapidly spreading communal virus but also the blatant silencing of any type of dissenter of the current govt. To make movie like this today, a director or producer would have to be either very bold or subtle or perhaps both. And even than people may start calling for ban
The movie director said the climax was inspired by the incident in which a bunch of college students took over Allahabad TV station and were shot dead. This was in 2005. This movie was released in 2006. Obviously. It was not all existential nostalgia
I feel you completely misunderstood the movie, you saw it with a narrow single point of view. The story shows we were ruled and treated badly by British back then and that still continues to today with these politicians who are no different from British and as selfish as them. Once they released and experienced this they could not resist fighting
"We will take over 1 radio station and whole country will listen." Students then - the SMS generation did have that kind of naivety then. May be not the students today.
Yo! I was a teen when this came out and I didn't like this movie at all! The climax made zero sense! The rage against the corrupt system was understandable but then these dumbasses decide violence/patricide/terror was the answer! Apart from the stellar soundtrack and acting I never got the hype around this mv or why it was so glorified?!🤷♀️
Dude why would you expect college kids to be logical and thoughtful? They were impulsive and emotional. Voilence is still used by people and governments in 2022
Sue was giving ‘I’m writing a thesis on you and use you without doing much for you in the long run and act like I did you a favour and will take credit’ energy.
I re watched and I think movie too much focused on their crazy extrovert behaving and those past stories . But at the end it makes up a good movie . Even the characters themselves said it's a bad example , but they are somewhat right . No leader has been punished by your traditional criticism and dharna . This system was made for us but now is getting used up against us . Still I believe their is another way but the movie is about those who lost so maybe if I would lose someone I would feel and know their pain .
Ab tak overthinking ka matlab samjha nahi tha theek se. Ab samajh mein aaya. I guess you missed the point the film was trying to make while focussing toooo much on the not so important details. Every character has an arc, maybe not the way you want it to be. But that doesn’t make it incorrect or not right.
Sucharita says it in the beginning itself. It is a bad idea, a super super bad idea to review a movie that created a strong impact at a very different age and then look at it from today's lens. At the very least, it is a foolish act to make that correlation. At worst, it is poor movie journalism because you did not have the patience to actually take the audience (of this video), back to the age when the movie was made and give the audience an insight on why the movie worked then and what it must be remembered for. When a movie has worked and established itself into the annuls of history, I see no business for a reviewer to pick potholes in it - e.g. "oh but why did these youngsters confuse the play they acted in as reality and went about killing people?". Instead, it would be far more useful to speak of why that correlation between the past (India's freedom struggle) resonated with the youth of India in 2006 who were at the cusp of wanting visible change in India.
I think you are not a good film reviewer or critic or whatever you tried to do here for this film. U move more than words you speak on top of it. Second time machine i saw and you lack appreciation and you more so like to put down efforts of others. You say time machine right ? so everything has a context in that time period. It has to be looked in context of the era . I think i will surely not click on your time machine or review etc.
I have to disagree with everything. And that's rare because I normally don't disagree with sucharita. Unfortunately, even back then a lot of people said aise thori hta hai yar. The point of the movie wasn't k aise hta hai the point of the movie was to draw parallels or non-parallels between the struggles of the youth in past and today. It wasn't about today's youth should kill their politician father but how youth can potentially take crazy in the heat of moment decisions.
@@halocraze9839 I don't think you saw what Siddharth says in the end...it is not as simple as commit crime and die...but sorry for understanding it you need to first understand the history of this country and how our system works
@@halocraze9839 lol they themselves condemned the path they took. They literally said system m rehkr system bdlenge. 😂😂😂😂 Tune kya dekha . Tu or sucharita thoda dimag bhi use kr liya karo. And try to get at the core. Students are impulsive
it was a terribly over rated and flawed film. ( i did enjoy it when i saw in my younger years ) . you dont ahead and "kill" defense minister or any minister because he is ostensibly involved in some scam.
