After spending a couple of months with our 2016 Range Rover Sport, we thought it would be fitting to do a fair comparison of the Range Rover Sport vs our Range Rover Full-Size L322 from 2011. Sure, the model years are 5 years apart, but I still firmly believe that the L322 Range Rover is more value for money over the L494 Range Rover Sport all these years later.

About this video: Today, we’re going to compare the difference of the full size Range Rover against the Range Rover Sport - the full size Range Rover’s smaller sibling. While both of these Range Rovers are great, I think there are a few points to be made in either direction for which Range Rover you should buy. Here are some of the key difference in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to help you decide which Range Rover is best for you.
Starting off with the full-size Range Rover L322 pros, let’s talk about visibility and practicality. Because this is the full-size model from the previous generation, the design overall suits that of a typical SUV. Visibility is fantastic in the full-size Range Rover L322 when compared to the Range Rover Sport L494. You also have the split tailgate only on the full size Range Rover - which is weirdly a key difference in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
Add to that, the full-size Range Rover has much more usable interior space than the Range Rover Sport, and interestingly enough, it’s not because they’re much larger on the outside. The fullsize Range Rover L322 uses its interior space more effieciently than the Range Rover Sport.
There’s also the topic of comfort, which the full size Range Rover L322 once again prevails in. The Range Rover L322 full size is a much more comfortable driving experience compared to the Range Rover Sport from 2016. The Range Rover L322 has a much more comfortable seating position and higher quality materials on the interior. Add to that, the full size Range Rover has a more comfortable suspension set up that makes driving a pleasure rather than a chore like it feels like the Range Rover Sport.
Most importantly, the Range Rover full size used was half the price of the Range Rover Sport used. That makes a huge difference because I don’t foresee anyone needing to do $27,000 in work on the L322 Range Rover when compared to the Range Rover Sport.
Moving on, let’s talk about the pros of purchasing a used Range Rover Sport instead of a used L322 Range Rover full size. To start with, the Range Rover Sport has a much more modern interior. It also gives passengers much better tech for daily use. The 2016 Range Rover Sport features bluetooth audio, better multi-media inputs, more user-friendly infotainment, easily accessible cameras, and better parking sensors when compared to the full size L322 Range Rover from a few years prior.
You also get a much more modern exterior design on the Range Rover Sport when compared to the full size Range Rover L322 from 2011. Obviously, that is expected considering they were designed nearly 20 years apart, but it does make a difference to some people, so it’s worth mentioning as a difference on the L322 vs the L494 Range Rover Sport.
The Range Rover Sport L494 also has an automatic tailgate and a lot of mechanical issues sorted that are common on the full size Range Rover L322. The Range Rover Sport is also a lot more engaging to drive when compared to the full size Range Rover, which drives like a boat on water.
Most importantly, though, the Range Rover Sport is still covered by Land Rover’s warranty, which makes a huge difference in feeling comfortable with daily driving a used Range Rover - no matter if its a Range Rover L322 full size or Range Rover L494 Sport.
So here’s which we think is best for each category to help you decide which Range Rover or Range Rover Sport is best for you:
Comfort: Range Rover Full Size L322
Daily Use: Range Rover L494 Sport
Value: L322 Range Rover
Servicing Costs: L494 Range Rover Sport
Fun: Toss - L322 is King Off Road; Sport is Fun on Twisty Roads
Which Most People Should Pick: L494 Range Rover Sport
Which I Would Pick: L322 Range Rover

We bought a brand new 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged for the wife to daily drive. Incredible machine, very fast and communicative road feel. I liked it so much I bought a used 2012 L322 Supercharged with 40k miles as a daily driver because I liked the softer ride but wanted the power of the supercharged V8. I will say this, the Sports hydraulically activated front anti roll bar makes the truck feel like you can take corners at 90 mph. It is amazing how fast and flat the Sport can corner...literally to dangerous speeds that a top heavy SUV should not travel at. The L322 is a much beefier chassis underneath...A-arms are way bigger, CV's and halfshafts are stronger and this would be a better choice if you're willing to off road a Range Rover hard core. The biggest reliability issues have been caused by the dealers not fixing an issue correctly the first time (both had extended warranties). The L322 went back the Land Rover dealer in the bay area and Sport went to the Land Rover dealer in Sacramento where it was bought. Both dealers sucked and caused issues or didn't fix the issue to begin with meaning multiple trips back to the dealers. My recommendation is use the manufacturers 4 year warranty and then put aside the $4000.00 extended warranty money and find a good independent Land Rover shop to fix stuff as it needs it. The 2013 Sport has almost 100k mile on it and mine is just turning over 80k miles. Even with the bad rap on reliability, no other SUV we have driven has the same feel and power with the combination of supercharged V8, air ride suspension and vault like security. Plus I love the square shape and hate the egg shape every other SUV has become. If buying a Land Rover just remember it is like being married to a horny super model wife that maxes out your credit card every month. Trade offs for happiness.

Interesting vid, I’m actually considering this trade-off myself. A few things to note about the depreciation that could have been mentioned though: - Range Rover model L322 changed to L405 in the 6 years, model changes make a huuuge difference to values. Particularly a major style change. L494 was still the current model when you bought it. - COVID tax - existed in 2021, didn’t in 2017. That said, even now in 2024 the L494 looks modern. And there is a new model out, though it’s not a major style difference. L322 not so much looking modern, though I personally like it better.

I am really struggling to see why you bought a L494 if you dont like it. I love my sport as it doesnt wallow around corners like the l322. You are comparing 2 vehicles that are designed for different purposes. Next video L322 vs boxster??

Man, you are GREAT to tell about the high sitting position. New Range Rovers have lost it. The whole point. Although they have all experience in the world to make you sit high, and still be able to drive like a sports car. To me, a guy who has done over 1 million miles, the higher and comfortable seating is the absolute priority. And just that LITTLE BIT lower, makes a ton of difference. By the way - many cars are now built a bit taller, means you are JUST not enough high to see above them in the newer models. They were a class of its own, and now they are just a compatitors to X5, Cayennes etc.

so why are you not daily driving the L322? Too unreliable and expensive to run?
@porse911
@porse911 2 года назад
Because L322 is one of the worst RR, development made during BMW ownership.

@@porse911 in 06 they moved to a Jag engine which is one of the best - no timing chain issues. 07-09 had the same motor with an updated interior and then 2010-2012 had the 5L which had engine issues but again, an updated interior. BMW engine ( same as the X5) was from 2003-2005. These were by far the worst years of the L322 with not only a bad engine, but low quality interior.
