Hello! I guess the first time I've heard this type of hack was in the soundtrack of the old-school video game Doom. Playing on a low string then immediately jumping up to highest notes. I loved it. And now, I know how to do it without getting my music sound bad. And at the end, happy new year my friends!
My favorite thing about your videos (besides the great music teaching) is the back and forth narration. It's like listening to a conversation and makes it so much easier to pay attention.
When I was interested in learning music theory, I didn't really know where to start. Saw some videos (from different channels) , they were kinda helpful but the way y'all explain everything in depth, it's pretty cool, I really love it. The songwriting mini course and the PDFs from your site, it's dope. Really love this channel. Thanks for everything. Y'all are a cute couple btw :)
Aww thanks so much Saksham for your very kind words and support, and a very warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! We're thrilled to hear the course and PDFs have been helpful to you :) We'd love to know what kind of music you make? Take care and have a lovely weekend :) Kate
Thanks for watching and connecting, Matthew! Hmm, not sure if you're serious or not... always hard to tell in comments :) Wishing you a lovely weekend and we hope to see you again for more theory hacks! Kate
I know this isn't quite related but I just read "hack music theory part 1" and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you will do further books as it seems long overdue. As excellent as your videos are, there is something pleasing about the book, the way it is written is much easier for me to absorb. When I have saved up I will be enrolling on your course, very pleased to have found you both.
We're thrilled this was helpful Brian!! Love your playful attitude and we wish you all the best with your melody whispering tonight ;) Thank you for being in the HMT family! Kate
Amazing video to explain precisely why things like species counterpoint, melodic fluency and voice leading are still so relevant in popular music, even within those more rhythmic-driven genres.
Yes indeed, Francisco! Thanks so much for stopping by and connecting, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :)
@@HackMusicTheory Thank you guys for the kind response. I've suscribed for sure! 😎 Nowadays I'm into instrumental melodic post-rock and microtonal stuff. As an idea, I hope you guys could make a video about microtonalism, as very few people are aware of the beauty and the expressive potential of quarter-tones and justly-tuned intervals.
I enjoyed reading your corresponding free pdf as I never really paid attention to what the shape of my melodies usually are and it made me see that especially boring melodies in songs like "bad guy" are ones that you can expand and still make them fit into the song. I wish you guys a nice weekend
A lot of modern pop music is monotonous, they just sing the same pitch over and over especially in the verse. Even Taylor Swift, Out of The Woods: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JLf9q36UsBk.html I agree with you, though that modern pop music is nowhere near as good or sophisticated as in the past.
Yay, for korgi jams!! Thanks so much for connecting Liam, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and have a great weekend :)
Thanks so much Danny, and a warm welcome to the Hack Music Theory community! What kind of music do you make? Take care, and we hope to see you again soon for more theory hacks :)
@@HackMusicTheory hello, I’m into Electronic dance music and I also play the guitar. I’ve been watching your videos and reading your books. They’re very helpful. Thank you.
Cool, thanks for sharing, Danny! We're happy to hear HMT has been helpful to you, and we really appreciate you being here, and are cheering you on in your music making journey! Have a great weekend :) Kate
That's awesome that you could recognize the flaw, Andrei :) If your melody is whispering that it wants a small range then trust that, and also perhaps experiment with a larger range sometimes to get out of your comfort zone ;) Hope you're well, Kate
Bonjour Louis!! Hope you are doing well and enjoying your new year so far :) How's your music making going? What modes are you into these days? Kate :)
@@HackMusicTheory hey ! We finally got our vinyl entering the pre-production stage at the factory, we should receive the "test press" in 2 or 3 weeks :) I'm currently experimenting with weird scales like whole tone, augmented and diminished. I also came across a scale, but can't find his name. It's an harmonic minor with a b2 and a #4. intervals are (root), b2, b3, #4, 5, b6 ,7

Thank you, like, really, most music theory videos i watch are boring, but this was easy and fun to watch, and i actually can remember the takeaway from this video lol

Hi guys, thanx for your video. This was a little trick to me. My english isn’t so good and I didn’t understand what did you mean by “playing over the bass line”. Is it playing higher than or something else? Thank you.
Hi Pedro, hope you're having a wonderful New Year so far!! Good question :) This concept is from counterpoint. So look at the bass line you've written under your melody, and wherever your lowest bass note is (or one of the lowest bass notes), that is where you want to consider playing the highest note in your lead melody. Then look for your highest bass note (or one of the highest bass notes), and that is where you want to consider playing the lowest note in your lead melody. Hope that helps, Pedro, and we wish you a lovely weekend!
@@HackMusicTheory Hi. Thanx for your answer. Based on your response and on my interpretation I’m assuming you are saying that the melody should be in a contrary motion with the bass line. One octave or so above bass line. Am I correct? Thanx again.

Hey hey Chasey, great to hear from you again, hope you're having a great New Year so far! The background music in step 4 is Ray's, which he made for our Alice in Chains video that you can check out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8e7zqN2l_Qc.html Thanks so much for being here in the Hack Music Theory community, you are truly valued 🙏

@@HackMusicTheory i just flow whit what im feeling that day... and just like many other young people i got into music trough a DAW rather than an instrument.... i really think that people like me are the audience that is always searching for new creators that share clever info like you guys... keep up the great work, much love
Cool, thanks for sharing, N!CO! We really appreciate you being here, and are cheering you on in your music making journey! Look forward to seeing you around :)
@@HackMusicTheory aww thank you, and you too :) I love the channel, short, sweet, informative videos. They've been very helpful for writing bass for my band Last To Fall 😈 ru-vid.com

Hi Arthur, thanks so much for stopping by and connecting! A good melody has a combination of both big and small intervals :) We'd love to know what kind of music you make? Take care and have a lovely rest of your week 🙏
It's your music, my friend, so only you can decide. But, an 11-semitone range is pretty big, so I'm sure that's good. Hope that helps, and thanks for stopping by, we appreciate you! Ray :)
Lol, great to see you, Cy, hope you're having a wonderful new year so far!! How's your music making going these days? Thanks big time for being a part of the HMT community, we really appreciate you :)

You're right, that barkdown was fantastic. Also this hack is pretty cool, you guys are so helpful! Probably will be a while until I write again because I've gotta get good enough at guitar, but I'll still be watching ;)
Another super handy video! I was wondering if yall wouldn't mind considering doing a video on phrasing/using silence when you get a chance. I'm sure you have tons of ideas already and these videos must take a LOT of work, its just something I'm struggling with :)
Happy to hear from you, Spencer!! Hope this finds you well and enjoying you new year so far! That's a great topic, and it's covered in some of our old videos, especially ones focused on vocals. But the best hack is to sing your melody and use rests where you want to breathe. I would also invite you to continue on your Apprenticeship journey, as all the ins and outs of melody writing are covered in great detail, including phrasing :) Take care and talk soon!
@@HackMusicTheory nice to hear from you too, thanks for getting back! Thats a nice tip, I will definitely keep that in mind in the future. I'd like to continue but unfortunately I lost access to the email account I signed up with(I will re-sign up soon, as I was finding the course really helpful). Thanks again for the tips and tricks :)

Lol, that's a pretty big deal after 4 years of watching HMT videos, congratulation Azi!! What kind of tea was it? How's Seattle treating you these days, did you get that load of snow we got up here? That's the most snow I've ever seen on the coast! Hope you're well, and we're wishing you a lovely weekend :) Kate
@@HackMusicTheory the tea was peppermint… but you can tell Ray that we do have some Freshpak Rooibos 😉. Seattle has been treating us well and we did have enough snow to keep us from driving for a few days. The pandemic stuff has slowed down my getting a band together and playing locally… I’ve been mostly virtual as before.
Love peppermint! And we've been drinking Rooibos in the afternoons, delicious! Happy to hear you're getting a band together, Azi, that'll be fun for sure :) K
@@HackMusicTheory yeah i'm trying to do music more and i just saw a new video so i'm trying to learn more and finally make something im somewhat satisfied with :D
@@HackMusicTheory it'll be hard to motivate myself but whenever you release a new video i'll be happy to try the technique out :D you will probably be my main motivation to do music at this point. thanks for all the videos!
Very Cool! This gave me some great insights into a number of areas. That is what I find so valuable about what you present, it seems that I am always making connections from your instruction to various projects I might be working on. Also, I jumped back and forth from the original and your revisions, and man, you can really hear the difference! Amazing! Thank you so very much. 🙏🙏🙏
