The people own our public lands but many rights to the use of that land have been granted by the government to achieve ranching, mining and agricultural demands society requires.
Thanks for this! I spent nearly all my life in environmental protection and resource management beginning with local government in Maryland and later with the federal government in Montana. Rangelands were foreign to me until I got a job as a hydrologist with the Bureau of Land Management.
You need to seriously increase the stock rate on this land. If you just dump a few hundred cattle on a few thousand acres they will eat only what is yummy. If you pack them into a small area they will eat everything. This does two things, 1 it reduces the amount of flammable material in the area and 2 it gives the good grass the same opportunity to regrow as the weeds. And just maybe the good stuff recovers faster than the weeds.
Im a farmer..... milked cows for 45 yrs.....and now raise beef cattle/ stock cows. Why are these farmers permitted to graze these lands free of charge ? They are abusing the lands not grazing the land ! There is almost nothing there for the cattle to eat ! Then in the end the ranchers complain they cant make a living ? Please...... they dont even manage what they have......and expect more ? Just have the cattle removed completely and allow the lands to heal itself. A farmer should never have access to anything " free" they only abuse it. ! I know......Ive seen if first hand !
