My first slightly negative encounter while flying a drone. Here's how to politely let someone know that you're not going to be bullied by anyone, regardless of whether it is Police, a Ranger or any other Karen who is trying to stop you from flying your drone, especially if a ranger tries to stop you flying your drone over Loch Doon
This Ranger seems like a nice big fella, but it's not good form to approach someone while they are flying and for your first words to be "Whit ye daein?" And then to follow that up with; "No drones!" No point in me being rude to the guy, so I just laughed and carried on doing what I was doing :)

He is a ranger and responsible for protecting the animals and enviroment and making sure Drones are operated within the law so he has a right to ask for it whereas this guy is not responsible for driving laws whatsoever.

Yeah... I've always said theres two types of tosser.... One who stick his nose in where its none of his business... And the other type who doesn't stick his nose in when he SHOULD !.... And they're usually the same person !!!!.. I had a neighbour years ago who stick his in everything, but when a young girl was attacked outside his house he stayed behind the curtains !!!

I'm not passive but I certainly don't look to make trouble and I still get accosted by miserables all the time. Not from flying drones (I haven't started yet - but that will definitely attract the miscreants lol) but from almost everything else. If I go a day without some tool wanting to give me orders then I've been doing something wrong lol.

The challenge is knowing when you’re within your rights and when you’re not. Problem is there’s a lot of people that think they’re within their rights when they’re not and they get up in arms when In the wrong the whole time.

@@EphemeralProductions Correct. Which is why I said one who >knows< the the law within whatever jurisdiction he is in. Of course one must know when he/she is within his/her rights. But when you do, don't back down to a bully even if that bully thinks they are in a position of power. If we are not a world of laws then we are a world of chaos.

I feel your pain mate. I'm 52 and was flying one of my wings a few months ago. Just as i launched it i saw a chap in the distance turn and start walking towards me. He told me that I wasn't allowed to fly drones here. When i informed him that it isn't a drone he said 'well i dont know what they look like'! The conversation ended up with me selecting 'Loiter mode' whilst we had a few choice words, i lost site of my wing for a few minutes LOL. He even said he had seen me many times and had reported me to the police. I told him to call them whilst we were talking but he declined!!!! I'm ex military and thought 'why have i served all over the world for some idiot to come over on a sunday afternoon to tell me what i can and cant do......He left after a few choice words from me.....I wanted to be as calm as you but sadly i wasn't....I'm sure there will be a next time whereby i can practice what you did, thanks mate!!!! You well deserve my thumbs up and subs!

Thanks for taking the time to make such a great comment, Mick. I’m also ex-military and I often feel like I was wasting my time now that I see the horrible attitude so many people have to people doing something that ‘annoys’ them. Anyway, keep your chin up mate, and if you want to remain calm, just look at them and know that if it came to a physical confrontation, you are absolutely capable of putting them on the ground before they even know what’s happening. That’s what stops me from getting into fights nowadays :)

I love this, the assertive nature of your response makes these guys realize it's an uphill fight. I'm guessing these guys are used to people just folding on their requests and your response almost threw him off enough that he wasn't prepared for what's to follow up with.

I get the feeling that he 'patrols' the area, ordering wild campers to douse their campfires. I've been told by another commenter that he was approached by this particular ranger recently while he was using a paddle-board at the loch, and the ranger told him that paddle-boards were not allowed. Now, this is clearly a case of a ranger making up his own rules and trying to enforce them. most people WILL fold because they don't really know the rules and will assume that the ranger does. I'm not the type to fold ;)

I love you matey. This happened to me and the harassment I had even when I had a licence from the reserve to photograph the wildlife and landscape was stupidly annoying. Even had the coopers called out on me. What’s worst is the way people distract you from flying safe.

Actually I believe that it is a criminal offence to distract a pilot while flying an aircraft - and that DOES extend to someone legally piloting any UAV. A matter of safety.

I have survived C19 and had a street party back in April to celebrate the relaxation of the rules and celebrate my 77th. In fact I enjoyed C19 from a some what selfish way, no "friends" coming round to borrow my good gear and return it dirty or broken. Neighbors who came with armfuls of veg and left with our home grown fruit. Shopping days were limited to one person, once a week. We suggested to neighbor's they stagger the days/time, so we all had fresh bread etc. each day. I watched tons of RU-vid, worked in the garden and tested beer. So Aaron keep yer pecker up and go annoy the wife, all the best. regard's from hot wet Vietnam

@@WindsweptRobert we did survive covid! Now tomorrow we start traveling again in the old motorhome. Gosh it feels good to feel good again. My mini 2 will fly somewhere on the Pacific ocean coast line. Robert there is nothing better then looking down from this drone and taking video or pictures. Best thing I ever bought in my life.😃❤️ Keep on keeping on brother. What you post helps so many people trust their drones. I absolutely agree, Mark. I am completely pro nature/wildlife and I do my own bit to preserve my natural local environment. I would have loved to have had a decent conversation with that ranger, but his obnoxious initiation of the conversation made me decide that no good would come of talking to him, so I saw him off in my own way as quickly as possible.

Well-handled Windswept! These miserables are everywhere. I don't understand the psychology behind it. I'm a helicopter pilot (I was ) - people go to great lengths to complain about the noise (and we make a HUGE effort to not make unnecessary noise and are acutely aware of this issue). These same miscreants live on a busy road where they ignore loud truck and other traffic noise but if they THINK they hear a distant helicopter, they are on the phone in seconds sigh...

Hi Peter, thanks :) The mini 3 drone (the one I'm flying in this video) is very quiet. It can't be heard - even in a quiet rural area - when it is 50m away. I think the ranger was making up stories here..!

Actually in fairness, traffic noise is generally a low pitch and kinda blends into a low hum with no one vehicle is distinguishable - unless some prat goes part with music blaring or baked bean can for an exhaust. Aircraft’s noise is completely different, individual and much more noticeable

Somehow I reckon that ranger has been getting calls etc from the same person complaining about the drone and thought it would probably be a kid and not an adult, who dealt with him with Scottish humour and logic. I keep watching this and it gets better each time. Love it 😂

Great job and example to all of us! I had a thought a couple weeks ago after watching a few videos of pilots getting confrontational about this situation... What if instead of immediately getting defensive, we get educational? So, I've typed up some 1 page information pages on different subject such as Drone Laws, the difference between recreational and commercial part 107, safety, and other resources. I print 5 or 6 of each off and put them on clipboards on my tailgate while flying. This way, I can explain that if I take my eyes off the screen to explain things to them it could be a real safety issue but the literature over on my tailgate will answer a lot of their questions. I've had a couple people tell me that they were about to confront me about it but didn't after reading my info.

That’s a good idea. But why should we educate them? We have paid for our education, the courses we have passed. It’s not our fault they are ignorant of the law/rules. If they don’t know the rules they shouldn’t be doing the job they are doing.

In NZ drones are not allowed to overfly private property without landowners consent, must fly above a particular altitude and when flown commercially must file a flight plan.

I don't know what regulations there are, but there should be some. Drones are not just annoying as heck to Humans who are not flying them, they also disturb wildlife. Worst would be near nesting areas. Yes, some birds aren't afraid and will even attack drones, but none of that is a good thing.

Evidence suggests they aren't, given the high amount of police interactions black Americans have with the police. Death by police is consistent among black Americans with other races. I'm not suggesting for a moment there is no issue with police violence in the US. Too many people needlessly die from police but not as much as the divide and conquer, divisive mainstream clickbait news media will want you to believe. Furthermore, this is some kind of park ranger. I love how if a member of the public spots you flying a drone, they automatically assume 2 things. 1) that you are doing it illegally and you have no idea what you are doing, and 2) that you are spying on them with the drone's 1000x zoom lens. A lot of folk see military drone footage on TV, and assume that your drone is fitted with the same kind of optics. The quip "can I see your driving license" was pure gold! 😂😂

Im a ranger in Aust. This conversation should have started with "hi how are you, we received a compalint about you flying drones, so I just thought I wouls see what was happening." The guy was aggressive and offended from the get go.

Let us be honest here, very unlikely there were any complaints. More likely he was trying to use the nest as an excuse to intimidate Robert to stop flying the drone. Then when he realised that wouldn't work, tried to lie about the complaints. Then his feelings and ego were hurt as there was nothing he could actually do. Then the question about the car (and likely it's reg) was rather menacing and obviously passed to the police and used to identify him... which resulted in the stupid intimidating and wholly unlawful house visit from the plod. The problem with Police Scotland is they are often hostile and act like you're a criminal when carrying out an "investigation". Then wonder why people are awkward with them. I have been lied to more times than not when dealing with the Police in Scotland.

Even the police fall for it, and they even act as corporation's private security, judge and jury at times. Thanks. It's happening everywhere. I have no love of most 'auditors' who claim to push their rights to film in public. I believe in our right to film in public, but the auditors are going out of their way to incite conflict to film for clicks n views, rather than to highlight the point that our rights will be eroded if we don't stand up for them. I have no issue with anyone filming any public servant (police, council worker, etc) to ensure accountability and to highlight the growing problem of authoritarianism that's creeping in (at a gallop!) to our society.

I felt a wee bit sorry for him when he was walking back to his vehicle. He looked very dejected. But then he drove in front of my car and parked bumper to bumper for 5 mins. Probably taking a note of my reg. He kept looking up at me for a reaction, but I just ignored him and kept flying my drone :)

Good on you for standing your ground. I had a similar experience from another drone pilot complaining that the aerial shots of a church were illegal. I was on a public footpath early morning and no one around and no houses anywhere near me.

This Ranger has made an absolute clown of himself ! Just because someone else doesn’t like you flying your drone doesn’t mean they are right and you are wrong. All he needed to do was to ask you where you were flying your drone, and if you were near the ospreys nest ask you to not to fly within 300 metres of it. Big respect to you for not cow towing to him.

Dont't know about this specific situation. But I can understand people complaining about drones. When you are visiting a nice landmark or scenery there's always someone flying a drone that sounds like a giant mosquito on steroids.
