The kitchen is AMAZING. I know of someone who redid her kitchen to look like the Outlander kitchen, and some year I’ll own a large enough kitchen to redo my own kitchen to look like it.
The Hocus Pocus house was built as a set in San Juan ISLAND state park which is in the Puget Sound (northwest of Seattle). I’ve camped there several times and it’s a wonderful place! They removed the house after filming so don’t go expecting to see it.
I would have liked to see the house from Charmed, in San Francisco too. Actually, the house across the street too! I know the interior was a set, but I’d love to know more about the style of the house.
@@kendragaylord I'd love to watch a video about that house too! My favourite witchy films/TV are Charmed and Practical Magic. There's also the house in the original 90s Sabrina the Teenage witch which was fun and light-hearted rather than the darker remake.
Howl’s Moving Castle is somewhat modeled after the traditional Slavic Baba Yaga home, which is elevated upon chicken legs. Baba Yaga is a witch that lives deep in the forest, according to lore.
She also has the role of helping young women come of age by providing a grueling but cozy respite from patriarchal pressure, which is fascinating because that's what Sophie does for herself
The chocolate shop in "Chocolat" is a magical place as well. Vianne, played deliciously by Juliette Binoche, is a good witch using her chocolates to cure peoples sadness, loneliness and mediocrity. Her mother was from an unusual tribe of Amazon jungle and she was considered odd, something that Vianne inherited.
Very magical, but in my opinion it is the character who makes the magic in an otherwise ordinary structure. After all it is in the things she brings with her ..the few things she can carry. Being a defendant of a mother who was of the Tribe of the Northern Wind, she had to be prepared to move each time the Wind called to her. This is why those items are what they are ..from the spinning disk, the "morcahete"(grinding stone) and her mother's funerary urn....
@@SeanLigman-yo6yc Thank you for clarifying the name of the tribe Vianne's mother came from. It's been awhile since I have seen the film and I didn't remember. A good point. I do love that set and the apartment above.
@@vintagegal541 i am currently homeless. I was so empathetic to the plight of the main character. I find great resonance with the idea I have to go when the wind calls me. Having nothing to keep me in place when it blows...this I've adopted the phrase of Tribe of the Northern Wind to describe I and my fellow "tribes members. Most specifically because it's classier than calling yourself "homeless"or "street person"....and yes tbe set eas beautiful...
@@dejahdanger I tried reading the book after seeing the movie. I couldn't get through it. Sometimes, the visual and characters on the screen are so much better.
Oh my god, i think i watched Eve's Bayou as a kid and completely forgot about it until now... one of those moments when you rediscover something so pivotal that you've never consciously considered before! Plus she's in Lovecraft Country as an adult???
I loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch because it was on TV during my teenage years when I became interested in witchcraft. The house and the show made me feel like it was normal and not going to send me to hell - even though it was a bit campy overall, the house was beautiful.
AHS coven house is also very fun. White exterior and interiors with accents of black or dark browns and a green house in the back! The green house room in practical magic though is my favorite ❤
I was just thinking the Witches of East End house was magnificent. And the apothecary in that show as well. I was so bummed when that show went all tentacle corn.
just a quick comment - in Practical Magic, it wasn't the mother who cast the spell against falling in love, it was Sally (Sandra Bullock's character, played by Camilla Belle) as the curse was all the Owens women would lose the men they loved
@@xoxolovechristielynnYes, their ancestor cast the original curse that anyone an Owens woman loves will die. Sally cast the spell as a child to never find love so she would never get hurt.
I'm so glad you included Howl's Moving Castle. I love the book and the castle is an active character in the story, and demonstrates Howl's power as a wizard. The animated movie really went to town with the chicken legs and multiple buildings all crammed together, like it's trying to disguise itself as a house but goes overboard.
I guess this was only witch and wizard houses, but I love the Beetlejuice house. So creepy, so campy, so good. Actually you should do a video on the best creepy camp horror houses - the Rocky Horror house spings to mind, Edward Scissorhands and of course the Addams Family houses. Would Jack's house in Halloweentown count? I guess I made up this category of house, so I say yes 😅 Wayne Manor in the Burton Batman movies would be a goodie. This is basically just a list of Tim Burton movies, isn't it 🫤😅
I’m so glad that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina got some recognition here .🖤 it’s creators paid so much attention to detail and it was really cool to learn that the inspiration for the house is another layer in itself.
ooh, I loved Stardust a thing I loved with Howl's moving castle is that it's likely based on legends about Baba Yaga in Russian folklore, having a house walking on chicken legs
I grew up in Newnan, Georgia and even as a child in the 80’s I used to say I was going to own that purple house one day (it used to look distinctly purple, not sure if the color is different now). That day never came, but obviously I’m not the only one who appreciates its beauty. It sat vacant for years before being bought again. And, it’s now been used in several movies over the last two decades. Lots of beautiful homes in Newnan as it’s literally called the City of Homes. And thankfully most were spared in the category 4 tornado that tore through Newnan in 2021.
Exactly the cozy, nerdy, witchy little video I needed while sipping soup and knitting a sweater. All of the houses featured are amazing examples of a great witch house. I think if I was going to pick one to live in, it would be a toss up between Lovecraft Country and Practical Magic. Give me those vibes.
My ultimate favorite is the house is the Victorian home from Practical Magic, then the next house from the movie Love Witch that Gothic Victorian Revival was magical in oh so many ways. However the house in Practical Magic had it all inside and outside. The garden was exquisitely beautiful and the view from the house was amazing. The interior of this house was very beautiful with such charm that it was perfect in the style and full of magic.
So glad you mentioned chilling adventures! The house is so cool and spooky looking, so fitting for the spellmans. Also I love that there’s a morgue. Dark
there are so many amazing witch houses! It was so cool to find your video, I though this was a very niche and specific topic, so I'm SO GLAD there's more people interested in witch houses!!! I would've loved to see Sabrina TTW's amazing house as well. She had my dream bedroom while growing up ♥ keep up the good work, I suscribed!!!
I'm so glad you liked it! I love the Sabrina the Teenage Witch house, but didn't include because there was so little footage of the outside. Its a favorite though
Oh my god the last house in the video is my absolute dream house. This was an amazing video! I’m totally subscribing! Thanks so much for this! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is such a great list! I need to rewatch practical magic immediately. I also love the house from the original Sabrina tv show, her bedroom is a dream
Such a fun video! My favorites on the list are the Practical Magic house (of course). And the real house used in Love Witch. I’ve see that house in person in Arcata California. We got turned around on a vacation there with friends and ended up lost on the road this gorgeous Queen Anne style house sits on. I realized we weren’t lost - we needed to see this house. I don’t remember the name of it but there is another beautiful Queen Anne house across the street from it too. Now I’ll have to watch Eve’s Bayou, and Love Witch the two I’ve not seen yet.
I haven't seen the Love Witch, but the style of the house reminds me of the house/apartment from the Mary Tyler Moore show! Maybe a nod to it since the aesthetic of the movie reflects that era? I'm not sure what style that house is, but seems similar to Queen Anne. It has the tower and the detailed overhang I think? Thanks for including Howl's Moving Castle! That redecoration scene is AMAZING.
This video is great! So many of these films are comfort movies in my opinion because of the witchy homes- so interesting and full of secrets, and tells a great story through architecture. I think some other witch homes we should visit are… The Wicked Witch’s Castle from the Wizard of Oz (1939) It’s a very art-deco inspired medieval castle with militaristic influences and is the most iconic witch abode in film to date! The Pink Palace Apartments from Coraline (2009) A beautiful Victorian built in the woods of Oregon, and has a whimsical parallel version in the movie’s “other” dimension. Miss Robichaux’s Academy from American Horror Story Coven (2010) An antebellum mansion in New Orleans, that can be visited today! There are so many more magical homes in movies and entertainment that should be appreciated, and I hope you can review more!!!
The Castle in the Wizard of Oz is such a great one. Can't believe I didnt think of it. I'll have to rewatch Coraline soon. I almost included the AHS Coven since I am still afraid of the railing outside after watching that season.
A Movie called: "Witch Way Love" - French and American, 1997 - featuring Vanessa Paradis, Johnny Depp's ex wife. Her House is a French Castle in the Region "Pyrenée / Pays Basque", close to Spain. The real name of the castle is "Chateau Abadia Observatoire" It is AMAZING!! And also the haunted witche's cottage from the TV Show "A discovery of witches"!
I just found this channel. God I love this. Seeing all of these gorgeous witchy homes and sets analyzed was great. If I ever had a lot of money my dream would be to restore a Victorian era home. Also, I was expecting the house from American Horror story Coven to be in this, but maybe another time. 😉
I'm sad to not see the Bewitched house on the list. No it wasn't a huge palace, but it was quite well-known and a popular destination on the back lot tour. This was a great vid tho--i'd forgotten how fantastic this house was in Witches of Eastwick--what a stunner!!!!😍
I always loved the Practical Magic house. I understand the production company provided floorplans of the house if anyone wanted to build it. The house from the film The House with a Clock in its Walls might be worth looking at.
My list would be, in no particular order; Practical magic Witches of east end Charmed Mayfair The burrow Sabrina, chilling adventures Sabrina the teenage witch The craft - Sarah's house The good witch -gray house Hocus pocus
Victorian/Queen Anne style homes are my dream homes. I currently live in a brick ranch style house. But one of my favorite homes is the one in Good Witch. I dream of having the front porch, but her house is so elegant, and she has the patio in the back, plus a small green house on the side.
The mansion is great, but i was hoping you would use the house from witches of Eastwick that Cher's character lived in,that was a fun weird little house! I think my favourite aspect of an ideal witches house is the universe inside an impossibly small space.
just discovered your channel through the automat essay, and i love this video! i would love to hear your take on the 90s sabrina house, which is definitely one of my favorite witch houses (after practical magic)! thanks for inviting us in!
The Practical Magic house has been my ideal of a dream house since I saw that movie as a kid in the 90s. I live in a house now that has a pretty witchy vibe which is thrilling. Last year I had a movie watching party where I showed Practical Magic and paused the movie at the midnight margaritas scene to serve Margaritas ❤
Just wondering if you ever saw the old movie 'Bell, Book & Candle' - not so much for the house, because it's actually set (I believe in the 60's) in the City and is an apartment/store front - but it's a great movie to add to your list. P.S. I love the black kitchen floors in Practical Magic (Midnight Margaritas) - there's a house near me that I'd love to get a picture of - amongst other things, it has an old witch weather vane.
I live in Coweta county where the Second Empire (#1 house) is located. I pass by it often and have always been fascinated by it. The house was also featured in The Odd Life of Timothy Green and The House with a Clock in Its Walls.
I just went to Pioneer Village for the first time about a month ago for the Salem Night Faire and I finally saw the Sanderson house! They put red lights inside so it was really spooky and it was amazing!
Even though it doesn't quite qualify as a witch house, one of my favourite houses was the glass and steel one from Thirteen Ghosts. If I ever one the lottery, I would totally build that house, including all the protective spells written in latin in gold on the walls! But my favourite from this list is definitely Howl's Moving Castle. I love the aesthetic of Howl's bedroom and I've been Googling the inspo for this so I can adopt it in my own place.
Great list! The Practical Magic is definitely my favourite, and I remember finding the floor plans for it many years ago, saving them, and dreaming of building my own similar house in the future, haha. You should check out the german movie The Little Witch from 2018, her house (and the movie) is amazing and cute
Practical Magic movie is that rare unicorn, better than the book. I think you should’ve added the charmed house , from the original charmed. That house is epic! The house really exist in LA, and they even reconstructed the interior sets, based on the actual floorplans, so the set would match the real thing, at least that is what another RU-vid channel said. Also, the Addams family House, both TV and movie version(90s)
If i can, I'd love to mention the Pink Palace from Coraline! I know it's another animated house, but beyond it being part of the plot, it's adds SO MUCH to the feel of the story and the Other Mother uses it to such a great advantage (although depending on how you read it, I suppose there's an argument that the house gets its revenge ;;.)
Please talk about the Dark Shadows house! The huge house with secret doors existing in the 70s. That house is fascinating and a character itself in that movie
I don’t know Sarah’s house form The Craft is technically considered a witch house, but it’s one of my favorites. I think it has the same charms as the house from Practical Magic
I would've also added the "Coven" house from "American Horror Story," which is the Buckner Mansion in New Orleans, as well as the Halliwell sister's house in the original "Charmed" series.
I know it's not a witch house but the house on Beetle Juice would've been great for this list. It's a character in the movie and it changes so much with the events of the movie.
Just wanted to say that Castle Hill is done in the Georgian Revival style and that the interiors are true to that. Even the library was salvaged from estates in England. So the interiors of the mansion scene for Witches of Eastwick were not filmed in the house itself, as that is not the style that is depicted in the clips you showed. If they didn’t use a studio, maybe they could have used a nearby property in Newport-nearby to the RI filming location, about two hours south of Castle Hill.
Suddenly the house in Beetlejuice makes sense. Not a classic witch movie, but the look of the house, the way the new owners change it - they must have been consciously playing with this trope.
