I think it would be really cool if every Commander Clash host did this with their paper decks. I would love to see each host’s insight into what makes their decks fun! Great video, I hope we get to see more like it
I'm about 6 years into playing commander and even before I started doing more proxies I had more decks then that. I had over 50 decks before magic 30th, and now I have over 100 decks. I'm almost afraid to count them all.
I've retired more decks than I currently own. My rule is if I haven't played a deck in over a year, it gets taken apart. I play about once a week and notice once I'm over like 15 decks some of them just don't get played ever.
Thanks for taking the time to talk about the deck itself and go into the build. A lot of these tier lists don't really mean a whole lot when you aren't familiar with their build
This is a pretty cool idea. I think I'll set aside some time in the near future and actually rank my decks. Also, I absolutely love Splice onto Arcane as a mechanic and I'm so, so, so sad Arcane didn't make a return in Neon Dynasty or some new plane.
My favorite deck is also an Ur-Dragon changelings build. I've just compared our deck lists and yours has 35 different non-land cards than my version. Just goes to show that there's so much variability with that theme.
Hello mister Tomer ! I never closely engaged with MTGGoldfish, but through some of your peers, on an EDH game somewhere, I heard you say something like "This feels strange to me to play with real cards since I play so much online". I thought, "Well, we are liking different things, farewell." So I launched the video, because I love this concept because your creations talk about you, but not expecting anything really. You said "Kalamax", I thought "so Basic." and stood up to do stuff ; you added "with Arcane spells", I came back down on my chair and listened to the whole video with interest. Hey, I'll sometimes watch the videos of this channel where you are solo now. Have a nice day, from France
probably the funniest game of magic i played was against a Karona deck, they played their commander without a blocker & everyone swung at them with their own commander & killed them with it lol
I actually put together a changeling deck because of yours, it has been a blast playing it. But honestly for me the best part of having this specific deck, is the options and the experimentation it offers. Just so much fun in different ways.
Speaking of pet unicorn wincons, I checked off Azor's Elocutors! I was inspired to build my Perrie weird-counters-matter deck because of it, and it won me a game last week that I had no business even surviving. It was a definite marathon, I was nearly out of gas, taxed out of replaying Perrie, then top-decked the Elocutors, had to explain them twice, and made it back to my upkeep at 5 life. The Zedruu player wasn't going to make it to their next turn, wanted to go home, had a Delusions of Grandeur, but couldn't quite kill the current archenemy. He picked the Arbaaz Mir player, mostly for having >10 life left, who would have hard-countered Elocutors had he untapped (and probably killed me incidentally in doing so). I had a Karn's Bastion activation and one meaningful spell in hand: Broker's Confluence! A handful of Proliferates later, and I filibustered them to death! Seemed a fitting way to end a long, swingy game. If either of my non-Zedruu opponents untapped I was pretty likely dead.
Just wanna say I love videos like this. With the amount of cards constantly being added it can be overwhelming to keep track and it's a nice reference to see what other players are doing with their collection, especially highlighting newer cards that fit into different strategies.
Tomer you're so fun to listen to talking about your decks and it's just so interesting seeing all of the cool restrictions you make with the decks, specially the arcane one
I retired it! Very powerful deck and unique, but it was very oppressive, even more oppressive than Toshiro in some ways, so I rarely played it. It's lost somewhere in my piles of cards now.
That unsleeved deck was gold! I played a draft tourney the other day going one round unsleeved until I couldn’t handle it anymore. All while my opponent shuffled his deck unsleeved like a poker dealer! I was a kid again for one round but that’s it. Go Tomer go with your juice deck box.
Having just finished my 34th deck and now having a deck for every single color combination in magic, I was shocked to hear I have twice as many decks as you! That being said, what cool and unique lists! Thank you for sharing!
Amazing day Tomer thank you for your content. I really want to highlight that this is probably my favorite type MTG video to date. I hope more content creators reproduce this content. Always love and laughter in your life and cheers :)
Im just gonna do it just because: 1) Chishiro (gruul aura/equip/+1+/1): It plays as a really chill combat damage deck when suddenly things spiral out of control and there's many masive creatures that are also unblockeable thanks to Champion og Lambhot 2) Monoblack Kenrith reanimator: It only has 4 non black cards, one Elesh Nor and 3 green ramp spells to set up cabal/urborg/nykthos shenanigans. It is a really powerful deck that becomes the archenemy quite fast. The fun part is that it manages to hold a 1v3 for a moment then either wins with value or gets crushed. It's a really cool concept and Im proud of my deck 3) Urza, artificer leader: Yeah it's an artifact deck but mostly is the deck that has all the strong interaction that I own like Cyclonic and Fow. I dont usually like those kind of powerful cards but I thought putting them all in a shell that I like was a cool idea and I do play it a lot (TBH it was Shorikai but then I found the dimir Tezzeret in my collection so I pivoted) 4) Imoti+Keruga cascade: Long story short, I add Keruga as my Pokemon to make it faster and more casual, and it ended up been too strong. So 80% of the 3 and 4 MV cards are ramp, so Imoti is likely to ramp when casted, so if it dies I can do it again next turn. One turn of untapping with Imoti is probably game, so I dont use it quite often, as I dont like that playstyle that much. 5) Zada: This was my first commander back in 2017 and it was heaps fun. Nowadays I just realised it's basically a storm deck with extra steps, which is fun but... Yeah
Lol some of us come from a time when your cards would just get scraped across the table. I have 2 budget decks and I don't sleave those. 1) cuz who cares they're cheap and replaceable and 2) it's funny to me seeing people get so tilted about not sleaving a $0.32 card.
Really cool video idea (thanks joey!). And timely! I'm currently debating whether the investment in another deck is worth it, or will just rot on a shelf.
Etrata, Deadly Fugitive has been my favorite lately. I run it with almost no intention of flipping cloaked cards and then pull out Eldrazi Monument with a board full of 2/2 ward 2’s. I had a mono blue theft deck that got targeted at every table immediately but somehow Etrata gets away with it, if the players don’t know what the card was and they didn’t get to play it first, it’s less feels bad and when they finally get them back they have that “I knew it!” reaction. Best cards to steal and flip are removal spells from other colors 😂
I envy people that still have their first EDH deck together, my first deck was Jugan, the Rising Star mono green elf and myr tribal, you can tell I took the motto of "Just play your favorite cards" very literally lmao
I also built Myra, but in my case the triggering case was the amount of triggers, where playing 3 or 4 attractions meant 30 triggers or so, an absolute nightmare. The list is amazing, I hope we get to see every goldfish team decks
Oh man, I was just about to try and build Myra. Good to know that after lots of effort it never came together. Curious to see what you do with the leftovers!
Love the video! I also built your Myra deck and loved the concept, and so did my friends. But the non deterministic extra turns made it drag on and we just hated playing it lol.
my favorite deck of mine is ALSO a Boros equipment deck headed by Akiri, Fearless Voyager (though it does not run Kaldra). I ran an equipment deck as my first casual 60 card deck before Commander was an official format, and was hyped to bring that deck back to life when Akiri was printed.
My most played decks: Kenrith Diplomat (politics heavy deck) Asmadi Big Stuff (deck gimmick: permaments only) Ognis Treasures (self explanatory hasty zoom zoom fun) Grismold Voltron (I love having a huge stack of tokens) Smeagol turbo-Tempt (my prescious
Toshiro is one of my favorite commanders to play against because it forces me to pilot my creature decks in a more creative way. It also helps me to be more attentive of my opponents boards (something I struggle with). Overall, it’s the deck that I believe has most helped me in becoming a better player.
"it looks scary but after a boardwipe.or two it's really hard to get back into the game" thanks for describing every deck I own 😂😂 love my tribal decks and I like world building with all the tribes I have super fun though it's funny because I'm the tomer in my group basically the only one that plays removal I stay trying to keep the board in check My decks are Dragons Grumgully +1/+1 counters Mono black artifact recursion Giants this ones my favorite and is definitely my baby deck for sure Spirits Elves Then I have a few that are under construction or have been taken apart Taken apart Esper urza deck forgot the name of the commander just got stale in gameplay Flying tribal azorius felt to easy so it got turned into my spirit deck Grumgully goblins used to be gobos but wasnt a fan of how the deck played so I leaned all the way into +1/+1 counters Trample tribal same with flying it just got stale a handful of these cards went to grumgully counters Spellslinger I tried so hard to make it work but for some reason I just can't get it right Under construction Giants yes its complete but I find fun cards for it every day it runs morophon at the helm 3 colors atm didnt think adding black or green was really worth it Goblins still trying to find a home for them after being cut from grumgully unsure what to do with them Spellslinger really want to do something new so im constantly trying to make it work i struggle to balance pay offs and actual instant and sorcerys while still including everything i actually need like removal ramp and such
I completely forgot about my infect deck fynn the fang bearer this is my fastest deck for sure and probably the most mean since it runs alot of the one sided fight spells
My favorite decks to play are Tovolar Werewolves or Naya Dinosaurs. I still have the first deck I put together. A Marath, Will of the Wild with the 99 cards being 33 creatures, 33 lands, & 33 non-creature non-lands. *Thanks for the Content!*
I ranked all my decks on my channel based on the experience they provided for other players and it changed how I built decks going forward - when I understood what it meant to impact another player's time and commitment to the game, I started replacing and dismantling loads of them - many of the decks from that video no longer exist, there are certain cards like 'Rhystic Study' I no longer put in decks - I'd recommend these sorts of rankings to all players.
Your dragon list seems similar to mine but I run Zirilan of the Claw at the helm for a lower power, more interactable, dump in your dragons to the battlefield. Makes it a little easier to get reps in
My most played decks recently are the faster and more powerful ones as my main playgroup has been an arms race recently , luckily I also play with a lower powered group where I’m able to bring out the more unique and fun decks
My most played deck is one of my first commander decks ever. Mayael the Anima! It never gets old slamming down bunch of fatties and turning them sideways :D
Maybe give Alania from Bloomburrow a shot for Izzet spellslinger? I’ve struggled to put together a satisfying SS deck for a long time, but I recently built Alania and it’s been super fun! I don’t have a ton of play experience yet, but I think it’s a keeper.
I agree with Kalamax - the only way I could make my list fun is by restricting it to a tokens deck. The majority of instants make tokens, and it goes from there.
I remember in the past you mentioned a modular enchantment deck and also with your modular kicker deck you have some way to differentiate the core and the specifics for each. Any ideas on how I might be able to do that myself? I'm wanting to make a white core vehicle deck for each two color combination. I'm curious as to how to best ensure I don't get anything mixed up
Oh, you summer child you... we'd need a 1.5 hour video to cover all my commander decks! And that's after editing!! Lol jk. But I do have a lot... too many, in fact. You know, I think I would like to have at least one deck for each color combination. That might be a fun long-term project - I have more Esper and Abzan decks (and combinations of those colors) more than others.
I tried brewing a similar Changelings deck, but with Atogatog as the commander, and every Atog. Didn't go well. Lol. The Ur-Dragon is a better choice. 😆
Based on your descriptions I personally would have taken apart toshino and edric. As with many commander players, I have a hard time keeping my deck count low. And I’ve found that strong decks like these are just not worth keeping together. I feel like lots of people keep them “just in case they happen upon a higher power pod”. But for me, I live in an area with lots of players, so it’s just easier and more enjoyable for me to find a different pod that is more my preferred level.
I agree, they probably could be taken apart too. Edric I might gift, it's budget it's not really worth taking it apart since there aren't expensive cards worth selling. Toshiro I will keep forever though, it's more like an art piece for me, I love picking up the deck and looking through the cards even if I don't play it that much.
I didn't just rank mine, I broke them down into qualities, gave them numerical values, then averaged them out. Examples #17. Tuvasa, the Sunlit Speed----------: [][][][][] Power----------: [][][][][][] Robustness-: [] Interaction---: [][][] Guard‐----------: [][][] Overall Power: 4.25 - Good Casual Typing: Voltron / Enchantrips Salt Level-----: [][][] Budget Index: [][][][][] Optimization: [][] #4. Oh god, I just realized I somehow have more commander deck than a content creator that makes content off their decks. I might have a problem. I ain't gonna fix that problem tho. Lol
I’ve been trying to come up with ways to make Etrata more resilient to board wipes. One of the things I’ve been trying out is a blink subtheme and the Initiative. Mass phasing has also been on my radar. Still trying to get the numbers right while not blowing out my budget. Really hope Vein Ripper dips after the Sorin ban, lol.
IMO the best way to make Etrata more resilient is to play slower and focus more on flipping up the cloaked cards rather than casting more cards in your hand. I've had games where I just get like 2 cheap assassins and Etrata on board, then spend all my mana flipping up cloaked lands instead of casting from hand. By the time a wipe comes I've got more than enough mana to recast Etrata and my hand is still full of gas. Also running more countermagic, more mass recursion options, more card draw, and march of swirling mists for mass phase out.
Agree. Threatening to flip up bombs, and flipping up lands when you’ve got mana available. Just sit there with your value engine going and wait for an opportunity to Maskwood Nexus or whatever when everyone’s overcommitted.
First of all, great video! Loved it. What I asked many times now is, if its possible to provide a link with all commander decks from the crew that you have in paper? Also love to see Elvish Pioneer, it was the first card ive ever pulled from a pack years ago. My wive gifted me the foil version from onslaught and 8th edition. Not i have all versions in a frame on my desk.
Maybe but I have doubts. Most of the creatures in the deck don't want to be handed off. Slicer/Alexios don't get much from it, and Karona is better off getting a goad enchantment on her when I get far enough to actually cast her.
It's sitting half-assembled in my collection. I love the concept but I don't find it fun to play honestly. It's a low-power combo deck and it's incredibly rare that I play at a table jank enough that I could bring it out.
Zada was another deck I gifted because I wasn't really playing it. It's a storm deck that I absolutely love, but felt bad making my opponents watch me solitaire.
