About Me:
I was born in Macclesfield and very rarely leave. I mainly discuss books on this channel but every now and then something else will slip through the net. I'm interested in most fiction, and enjoy books that tell stories about older characters as I feel they're often under represented in literature. Lately, I've become interesting in telling and discovering working class tales.
I have a BA in Creative Writing and have been the secretary to the Macclesfield Creative Writing Group since 2011. In 2015 I independently published my first book Our Doris. The book follows the eponymous Mrs Doris Copeland, atomic housewife, with a rock bun recipe that can make even the most secure dentures shudder. There are three sequels, Indisputably Doris, Doris Ahoy, and Royally Doris.
In 2020 I released An Heir to Murder, the first in a cosy crime series featuring Alice Valentine.

I love reading an author's entire body of work. I've done it with Tom Robbins, Jonathan Safran Foer, Emily St. John Mandel and Ottessa Moshfegh. Currently working in it with Barbara Kingsolver (only a couple left), Stephen King, Charles Dickens, and Joyce Carol Oates. I'm thinking about doing it with Anne Tyler. You can learn so much about an author; what matters to them, what they think about, reoccurring themes and subject matter, etc.

Wow, you've certainly worked your way through more authors than I have. Barbara Kingsolver is on my list, but I seem to have veered towards 20th Century female writers in Britain recently. I'd be interested to hear what you make of Anne Tyler's entire body of work, simply because one of our volunteers says as she's read everything Tyler has written and has certain opinions so I wonder if that would be the consensus. I agree that reading all the work an author has written does help you gain an idea of them as an author, what is important, do ideas change about certain topics as they age - that sort of thing.

Angel sounds so good!! Excited for the short stories to come. I am on a short story kick at the moment and reading a bunch of George Saunders.

Any short stories you'd recommend?

@@CharlesHeathcote In terms of short story collections, Birds of America by Lorrie Moore is ace. I also loved The Wheel of Love by Joyce Carol Oates, The Collected Short Stories of Muriel Spark, and The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter.
