the scariness of foxy in fnaf1 isn't so much his jumpscare but the leadup. it's that you go to check on him, notice he's gone, then the panic sets in and you switch to the hallway cam and see him _sprinting_ down the hallway, and the next moment is his jumpscare. it's got more moving parts to it that make it scary
@lavenderscare4995
@lavenderscare4995 2 года назад
Yeah! Like he's the only animatronic we really see in motion in the first game and the last one to act up, so it was very easy in 2014 to get freaked out by him.

@lookatthetree978
@lookatthetree978 2 года назад
That “loud distracting ambience” is intentional to distract and disposition you from the positive useful feedback. It’s very well done in most fnaf games, particularly the first one. As an example the fan is always on and buzzing making a detrimental effect for when you need to listen to chica’s pots and pans, it’s a gameplay feature that doubles as a way to fill the void with an unsettling tone. Fnaf 4 however does as you said; hit it out of the park, it’s reliance on sound makes you have to listen which makes the jumpscares so much better. It’s occasional ambience like a grandfather clock chiming or a dog barking (what the dog doin’?) really sell the location and give an also detrimental stress as the player would most likely take an unusual sound in a game that is all about listening as an important part of the night when it’s actually just some world building silence killer. It’s used all throughout the fnaf games and in various ways and techniques so I don’t think it’s fair to say that it’s “loud distracting ambience” as it is essential to the game’s credibility and creativity.

Even in the non-VR set up, it is absolutely terrifying with the set ups. From what I've seen of other horror games, those set ups absolutely take the win for scariest horror game situations. Massive in scale, proper lighting for it, and in the case of some, horrifying, unnatural movements. If they did better with sound design, and the seamless transitions like voosh mentioned. It would probably be one of the single scariest games out there

I am a 5 foot woman, if those 3d characters in VR had seamless/fully rendered jump scares, my soul would have legit left my body and I would not be able to play the game at all. Like I was nearly catatonic just looking at how massive they are. I wanted to quit immediately and I've consumed horror content on the daily since childhood. At least on the first night, I went to pause and realized that they don't fucking stop moving in the pause menu so I, an adult woman was nearly in tears within seconds and had to physically remove the headset because that feeling was utter terror - I was inconsolable for minutes. Scott saved a lot of soiled undergarments when he decided to hold back a bit on the jump scares.

So, if I remember correctly I don't think he put her physical body in Ballora like he did to the 5 missing kids. It would make more sense if her body was actually in it for having real eyes. I agree. Springtrap has such a good design, but the way he's animated just ruins it. He runs stiffly across the screen while you have the camera up at a completely fine, normal height, then the next time you see him he's at least a foot shorter in an effort to put his face right in front of yours. It's such a simple fix too because they could just make him bend down a little bit to keep his height consistent. Half the time he moves like a guy who got stuck in a metal suit with rusty joints, but his jumpscares look like a normal person who moves much more organically. He's just inconsistent and it feels super lazy. I'd rather have a slightly worse Springtrap model that moves better tbh.

I think Ultimate Custom Night wasn't really supposed to be scary. It's just a Freeplay celebration of the franchise up to that point, everything that happens in that game is controlled by you so jumpscares are really just a way to transition into the game over screen. This of course doesn't justify some of the really poorly made jumpscares but I think it does justify characters like Happy Frog being in the game. What does justify the poorly made PNG jumpscares a little bit in my opinion is the fact that Scott had to do 50 jumpscares seemingly on his own? So he might've had to make some shaking jpegs to release the game in time

some of the renders on the game look a bit off so i imagine he might have lost some of the models of the characters and had to make the jumpscares with what he had. also in some of the trailers the animations do look a bit weird, so i imagine Scott isn't very good at animating and that might be the reason for most of the movement on the games being hidden

I do recall him saying at one point that some jumpscares had to have frames removed because Clickteam just couldn't handle so much strain for how amibitous UCN was mechanically, so Scott cut down in the one aspect he felt he could which was the jumpscares so that the game didn't lag. Springtrap (fnaf 3) was the PEAK character design for me. Not only because of his moldy, nasty, bulky appearance, but the way you KNOW he's sapient. The casual way he lumbers around, the way he deliberately HIDES from the cameras view most of the time, the way he will walk up to you and naturally finish you off. The children who possess the animatronics are operating on pure emotion and rage ("they're like animals" :fnaf custom night) but William...he kept his wits and cold calculated nature. He was a murder in life and in death. Not even the agony of having his physical body destroyed wavered that need for bloodshed, and that freaks me out. He truly is evil.

I cannot emphasize enough the lack of justice a video clip does for FNaF VR: Help Wanted. The models are enormous, in a way that is not even remotely portrayed in a RU-vid video. The hulking animatronics slowly peering over at you in the VR versions of FNaF 1, or repairing a model twice your size at shoulder height only to have it sit up and attack you, or having to rapidly look to your left and right in a panic to avoid having Mangle crawl through the vents to get you. It's not even close to as scary on RU-vid. It's something you have to experience in person to understand, and I would not recommend allowing your children to do so. You'll give them actual trauma.

HW is the scariest game in the series for this reason imo. Just seeing all the animatronics hover over you is terrifying and a RU-vid video doesn’t begin to do it justice. Especially since you’re expecting it since it’s an all jumpscare video

I know I'm replying to an over 2 year old comment but by chance you or anyone else see this then this is 100% accurate. Like even the little mini game where you have to hide in the fnaf 4 closet, while Baby is in the room searching for you. That little mini game is generally so fucking uncomfortable because you feel so absolutley tiny in comparison to this massive hulking metal monster trying to kill you. While your hiding in a small closet with no way to actually escape. The objective is though you HAVE to let her see you, and when she does her eyes start to glow and she begins stomping right over to you, the objective is to close the door so she can't get in right at the last second. It's such a well done little mini game and the true scaryness of it isn't necessarily something that can just com across from watching a RU-vid video about it when tour in VR it is a completely different experience. And so many of tge modes in that game are like that, but the baby one is just the most visceral one in my mind that I always come back to when making this point.

What was horrifying about the jump scares in FNF 1 is that what happens to security guard is left up to imagination, didn't quite know what happened to the character after. Because remember, the animatronic didn't kill you, they thought you where an empty endo skeleton, they would attempt to stuff you into a empty suit and as a result killing you. The terror the security guy feels as he is dragged down the hall, how long his broken body could survive, who find the body if at all, is all left up to the imagination.

The main gripe I have about the newer jumpscares is that WHY DO THEY PAUSE ON THE LAST FRAME FOR HALF A SECOND? It would be SO much better if the static screen cut the animation off, or the animation kept moving forward towards the camera until the screen is black. But instead, the way their animations abruptly end and pause there for half the jumpscare really just ruins it. Thats why I like the first and second games' jumpscares as most of them actually keep moving while your screen goes to static.

As someone who's learning 3d modeling slowly, that issue with the glamrock freddy thing SCREAMS a lack of "retopology" to me. Basically, retopology is when you go over your sculpted model and place polygons as evenly and neatly as possible, making it possible to have a much nicer flow and only having as much detail as is necessary. That looks to me like they just went straight from having all the detail needed to sculpt the shape they wanted, but didn't take the next step.

I watched the entire thing on stream already but I've been thinking about this exact same thing since Security Breach came out and he put it into words really well here. I also think it's worth mentioning about the artstyle - the uptick in the horror subgenre of "what if this thing for kids was scary" that's happened thanks to FNAF's success tends to miss the mark on what made the FNAF style immersive in the first place. FNAF isn't "what if animatronics were scary", it's "animatronics ARE scary", and there's textual explanation for when it strays from reasonable animatronic design. The FNAF robots honestly look less scary than the real life examples he showed at the start, but the fact they feel like real animatronics is a big part of what makes it work. There's a lot of FNAF fangames and adjacent inspired games that don't understand that. That Poppy Playtime thing he looked at at the end of the segment looks like an example of the missing the mark kind. It's kind of weird seeing Security Breach veer so far off into the opposite direction to what a lot of FNAF-adjacent things do, in making them look cuter and friendlier than ever, but I think it shows an understanding of what it was going for in the first place at least.

"Kids thing but scary" trend didn't start with FNAF, it was already a cliche in creepypastas and online culture in general when FNAF1 came out. Even the "Slender but with kid's characters" indie game thing started at-least 2 years before that. As did Sonic.EXE and it's spawn.

Security breach I have mixed feelings on. Like, after watching explanations of the endings and how it goes into the lore, it's very interesting to think about. But with all the glitches in the game, it threw everything off and confused me. I don't usually watch explanation videos after a FNAF game, cause I get the lore right away. My favorite thing about the Springtrap jumpscares are how starkly they contrast with the old animatronics from FNAF 2. In all of the stationary FNAF games it's never made explicitly clear whether the player character is standing or sitting in the office (until Pizzaria simulator where you basically have to be hunched over to fit in the vents). So the height of the old animatronics has an extra layer of gravitas because, if you're sitting then yeah they're pretty big, but if you're standing then holy shit they're massive. The opposite happens with Springtrap because if you're standing while he jumpscares you then he kinda looks like just this short guy walking up looking to fight you, so you just think "yeah I can take him," but if you're supposed to be sitting down, that means that either William afton is 5'5 or shorter, or the player character is tall as shit. Either way the height difference just makes me laugh.

I think Foxy's jumpscare in FNAF 1 is a little underrated. Not him leaning into the doorway but when he runs down the hallway and THEN he pops into your room. It works best that way because you look through these rooms seeing nothing but perfectly static animotronics with only the implication of movement. Then out of nowhere you see one barreling towards your room, and you only have a split second to shut the door and save your skin. It's super simple but super effective.

I think an important thing to note about FNaF 1 and 4’s jumpscares is that they were animated with the environment, you can see the background shaking with the animatronic as if they’re physically grabbing you. In every game after that they kinda just look like JPEGs that were greenscreened onto the environment. And I think that’s part of what made the first game so memorable, the jumpscares were animated like a cutscene. Edit: also the FNaF 3 Hallucination jumpscares are severely underrated imo. Definitely my favourite part about number 3, quite liked having jumpscares that messed with you in more ways than just being a game end, Springtrap’s ones are super goofy though.

I'd actually say the Puppet's jumpscare in 2 is my fave. Its gliding motion fits with it being lighter than the animatronics, and just like Foxy it charges at you instead of appearing right in front of you, which I find scarier. Plus the white eyes lighting up make it just so much more terrifying when up till now you saw it only without them. I don't think the details matter much when you freezeframe it, because the effect of it when you're actually playing is much scarier.

I think to extend the idea of fnaf having dream logic, I’ve had many dreams where I knew something was going to get me and I had no chance of getting away. I would try to close my eyes and roll into a ball just to not have to witness whatever it was that will kill me but no matter what I did, I would see a jumpscare of sorts as if my eyelids were transparent. The death screen when you run out of power in fnaf 1 is very reminiscent of that feeling.

As a person who loves this franchise, I love your criticisms. You are really accurate and I've never noticed the lack of strength in every jumpscare after the 4th one.

33:11 if I remember correctly. The first three fnafs had 3d scenes, but they were rendered in game as flat 2d renders but curved around the "camera". So they had that distinctly 2d feel (things can't change in real time, so they're masked with static or light flickers), still allowing somewhat of a 3d view. which is why a lot of the jumpscares feel weird. Because they're basically a new layer on top of a 2d canvas. In 4 the whole thing is rendered like a traditional game.

I think ballora in sister location would be better, id the endoskeleton didn't have eyes. Like, the animatronic isn't designed to open its eyes, so it would at least to me be a bit creepier if the jumpscare without the faceplate opening opened its eyes to reveal nothing. Basic? Sure, but I don't think wise anime character eyes -_- are scary.

Vaush love you. This is the second seemingly random thing that you've done that I share with you. 1.) I'm not really deep into FNAF, but I did find myself watching Markiplier playing Security Breach 2.) the other thing was when you went through a random tangent about finding the best underwear the one with the blue stripe at the top that they no longer maker, and switching to meundies. I was blown away when you told that story -seriously went through the same process 😳

One thing you'll notice about the original FNAF's jumpscares which is present in almost no other FNAF games jumpscares if the shaking of the camera. FNAF 2, the very next game featured very jarring, weightless animations, and it's partly because there is very little effort put into them (probably because Scott pumped FNAF 2-4 in literally less than a year after the original)

I think the idea behind the jumpscares in ultimate custom night is that previous ones didn’t have enough of the startle factor, they were too static so they just went ham on the shaking and ignored quality in other areas.

Not gonna lie, I just think FNAF never really captured what actually made those old Chuck E Cheese animatronics so unnerving. Instead they originally captured more of the unnerving nature of 90s 3d animation. Unfortunately, after the first game, he seemed to be more interested in making the models generically creepy rather than capture some sort of uncanniness. He even seemed to just want them to look cool/iconic rather than creepy. I think he either needed to double down on the 90s 3d model creepiness, or the animatronic creepiness to be genuinely creepy.
