I don't know how much I like how you ranked these songs on how stress inducing they are, but it looks alright, although me being a B2W2 ost enjoyer some these rankings give me minor pain, but since this tier list is about stress I can somewhat agreee with the rankings
@@hellogoodsir2502 yeah that’s usually how these things go lol. What I look for in a gym leader theme may just be different than what you do, and that’s okay! BW2 had phenomenal themes so just know these rankings are meant to split hairs more than establish definitive large gaps in quality.
@@Brassydoots Yeah what I look for are just bangers like, "Am I going to listen to this song for a few minutes, or am I going to have the song on repeat for 10-20 minutes?"
For Sword and Shield, my favorite part is actually not on the "Full" version you listened to. It's a variation of this theme where it gets muffled, as if you're on the building next to the rave. It plays when your Pokemon is downed, and it builds this "Oh crap" feeling.
I'm a gen 3 guy and i still perfectly remember the anxiety while battling Hoenn gym leaders and Kanto's ones in FRLG when i was a kid. FRLG music gives me a lot of progressive rock mood, that's why i never get bored with them. BW gym leaders theme: another well composed one. It's so much powerful. These three themes are the holy trinity in my opinion
Three great choices for sure! I feel like a gym leader theme has to make you feel like there are high stakes to the match, and some themes do that better than others. Pretty much every Gen 3 theme holds a special place in my heart so I always make sure to give those love. Appreciate you checking out this video!
@@Brassydoots Okay......Gen 3....Hoenn.....That part where it's really low and it's like Norman is on top, then all of a sudden, critical hit and you are back in the fight, the lows and highs match a gym leader battler where you are nearly down and out, like in a boxing match, then you spring to your feet and start reeling the opponent with a few left right combos to get back into the fight, that is why gen 3 music is the best.
Yeahhh I really wish that theme had been able to do more after such a solid intro. There are a few X and Y themes that do something like that and it’s a bummer. In a vacuum though, the theme honestly isn’t too bad. Thanks for checking this one out!
Eh I super disagree on gen 7. Easily the best one. It starts out as a what looks to be terrifying battle, tribal themed, but then you're kind of feeling it and enjoying the battle. It fits Alola imo and that's what helps. The gen 3 one feels high stakes as well with the trumpets in the middle but as you go through the battle, you feel better. Red and blue has the exact same thing has a happy vibe to it but gets more serious.
Yeah I can definitely see where you’re coming from. I think I just liked the consistent intensity of the older themes a lot more, whereas sun and moon almost get TOO happy, though as you pointed out that does fit the region. When I heard the champion theme in those games though it just made me wish the kahuna theme could’ve been more like that ya know?
I love the Kalos gym theme. It's so different from every other one and then that guitar comes in and just takes me there. I don't know. It's so good imo.

What I find super interesting about your critique of newer remixes trying to "fill every space" - that's my exact criticism with the Johto themes, especially their remixes of Kanto themes. They are, by FAR, the most cluttered messes of any pokemon OST IMO, so I find it interesting that you have that critique for everything BUT the Johto remixes. Edit: Also - uh, no final stand music for the Unova themes??? That's a HUGE part of those fights.
I've already touched on the Johto situation in another comment, but to address the Unova theme final stand music: while it would maybe help their rankings here slightly, imo, the final stand music isn't anything crazy special. Neat themes that add some fun flare to the end of the fights, but nothing mindblowing. In retrospect, I do wish I had included them when doing this list, but this was years ago when I did this one so not much I can do now haha
Yeah, at first I was Like " Gen 6 themes in general sucks" Not until I keep hearing them and It just keeps getting better especially the gym theme and elite 4, but still gen 5 is one of the best in my opinion not because of nostalgia ofc.
I feel ya there. In a vacuum the Gen 6 themes aren’t horrible but when you listen to them alongside the themes from other games it becomes clear that they’re usually lacking. That’s of course just my opinion though lol. Appreciate you checking out the video! 🍻
When I look at gym leader/E4/champion themes, I look for a few different things. Of course Pokémon isn’t hard so I don’t nessisarily look for stress but I do love intensity. If a theme feels powerful, I’m likely to listen to it on repeat and enjoy it. Some themes do just feel like they would be better for a friendly rival though.

I know this video is old-ish, but I want to make a defense for Sinnoh gym theme. To me it feels more like a grand clash of strategy and trying to think through the next best move rather than a fast-paced stressful struggle, so I don't think ranking it on stress levels does it justice. Still a great video though
Oh and that only goes for the gen 4 and gen 8 versions, the gen 5 one makes more sense to be fast paced since it's a tournament and you might not have the time to think through stuff in the heat of the moment

It’s kind of that curse of being put against so many other extremely good themes that you have to split hairs a bit to not just put them all in the higher tiers haha. Yeah I tend to focus only on the mainline games for most of these tier lists, otherwise people will want me to cover all the Pokémon masters themes and what not as well which would just make the video too long haha. Stadium 1’s theme does go hard though, it’s very similar to the classic Gen 1 theme so it’d be up there on the list for sure. Stadium 2’s theme is not great though, not sure why they decided to make that theme so s l o w
No, I actually didn't even think about those when I put this one together, though I think I filmed this when I was still doing my playthrough of Legends Arceus. I love the music in that game though so I'm sure it'd rank pretty high!
Good list, hgss does have some of the best music in the series, I think my favorite gym leader theme is definitely the hgss Johto theme. Gotta completely disagree with you on the whole percussion thing though Rival Themes when??
Yeah hgss are just great in so many ways, and their music is a huge part of that. I’m also glad you enjoy the percussion constantly playing in later gens because for the most part it drives me crazy LOL. @@ItsFireTiger when this was recorded, gen 9 wasn’t even out yet so that was obviously not getting included here haha. I definitely blanked on the last mon themes for the other two though! Always liked gen 5’s, gen 8’s is fine too. Neither would be in the top tier here though imo.
Someone also really does need to take your nastolgia goggles off. Music wise, I don’t believe Gen 1 is as good as you think it is. I can’t get myself going with it as much as I could Gen 3 or Gen 8. You really do have just a bunch of nastogia. Case closed.
That’s the beauty of lists like this; it’s all just my personal opinions! My enjoyment for these themes goes beyond just nostalgia and I gave my reasonings on the video, but if you disagree with my takes then that’s fine! Sounds like you've had quite the journey with the franchise. Always wondered what it would've been like to experience the franchise out of order, but I started with pokemon red and just went in order from there so it's a foreign feeling to me haha. Nothing wrong with starting on ORAS though, nobody can tell you whether you're a real fan or not, just enjoy the games how you please!

I typically avoid the masters themes in these tierlists since there are so many to cover from that game alone at times. I usually just focus on the mainline games, but if people recommend any masters themes live when these are being recorded I'm always happy to give my reactions to them!
