Mama and Sleep are incredible. i honestly don't understand how anyone could come up with these kinds of songs. i'm beyond happy that someone like you enjoys them!
Plot twist: Teenagers is just a weird interlude where the Patient meets some rowdy dead teenagers on his way through the afterlife, and he's just like.... ugh not again.
Teenagers wasn't even supposed to be on the album according to Gerard so that's probably why it breaks the flow. Also, cancer was supposed to be at the start it the album for contextual reasons but they moved it so that sonically, the album had a better intro.
Or maybe the song is literally representing teenagers? They don't fit into their surroundings and instead stand out, and through the song, we find out that they don't want to.
Thales defending UT XD tho i gotta say... my first my impression seeing both UT and MCR was me cringing and disliking what they appear to be.... and now im addicted to both of them....... Me hearing someone mention UT/MCR: OMG U KNOW THEM/THAT GAME?!?!?!?!! OOOOOOHHHH
Griffin Langhans not gonna lie, mcr is more emo to me than Midwest emo. Imo emo is more emotional posthardcore, which doesn’t necessarily describe mcr, however Midwest emo is pretty much sad indie rock so idk
I think the reason why Famous Last Words pulls it off for me, is because the intro transition into such an aggressive and sassy riff. The chorus comes off very sonic for me, and it's followed up by a sweet lead guitar for the second set of verses.
It's not always the artists who get to decide what their work is labelled as. They were part of the scene and had a lot to do with the culture and the aesthetic. Everyone has listened to them rejectin the term "emo" in interviews, still, they'll never escape it. Also, I think the most stupid side is not the emo kids, but definitely those who missed on an amazing band because they didn't want anything to do with the label "emo", which it's always good to remind people, came attached to labels like "gay", "for girls", etc.
Same band who said "I got so emo I fell apart" (that was a joke made by Gerard lol) I wouldn't say all of My Chem's songs are emo and they're also mostly punk and goth, but generally their songs make people feel emo.
For me Famous Last Words is neither a crashing low nor a soaring high, but rather a perfect representation of how you might've seen some shit, and you're not out of it yet, but you're determined to keep on pushing and grit your teeth and face whatever life throws at you the best you can. I love it for that
Even though Famous Last Words is not by far the best song, it has an special place in my heart. The chorus is motivating and I love that the album doesn't end in a depressing note eith Disenchanted, instead encourages to live. And it doesn't do it saying stuff like: Life is beautiful, love yourself, etc; but how a person would approach the situation of thinking about death, it feels real.
Disenchanted almost didn't make it to the album, Mikey (the bassist) convinced them to keep it. The first time I heard Sleep was when I was 10yo and till now it's one of my favorites MCR songs, it was the live version and watching that performance (even if it was only on tv) was really life changing, MCR shows are the best thing, so I wanted to ask if you have seen The Balck Parade Is Dead, I really want to know your opinion of the show. Thank you for this videos, they really make me happy. (And the band actually had really bad time whhile recording that album, so the sounds at the beginning of Sleep are Gerard's nightmares)
The way I justify Teenagers and Disenchanted's placements is that the Patient is reflecting on his adolescence, first, angrily in Teenagers, remembering only the negatives, then bitterly in Disenchanted, weighing the negatives equally against the few positives but still ultimately pitying himself. Then, in Famous Last Words, he breaks out of that self-pity to face his afterlife with acceptance.
Thank god somebody doesn't love Disenchanted!!! I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't love it lol, it's a fan favorite for some reason. As much as I absolutely love Sleep, Mama just can't be beat. Great list. I'm actually surprised House of Wolves is as low as it is considering your initial thoughts. I guess it didn't age as amazingly as the others. Great vid brad, more like this please!
Funny story here...I've watched so many quinceañera videos before. In their waltz, they chose to play Disenchanted. Because of that, disenchanted became a favorite song of mine...😂😂 such a memorable acoustic guitar intro, seriously.
I initially did not like Mama very much, and now it's in my top two with I Don't Love You. It just gets me with the switch ups. It's such a fun and gut-wrenching listen.
Brad Taste in Music I like disenchanted personally because I have special memories connected to that song, so it means a lot to me, and I just feel like it just sounds sweet. So it’s a favorite of mine for that reason
Before i watched the video i knew the top 2 would be mama and sleep, and i completely agree. This is definitely the best ranking of TBP. And i really wanna thank you, Brad bc we know you don't really enjoy making this emo content but it seems that you love us and give us the best from you. Great video. Loved your comments for every song. Amazing editing skills. Love u!
Gerard Way always had this idealistic intention to be a voice of a youth that he didn't feel had one at the time. Disenchanted to the story is just some sad complaining but outside it it's what ties the album to the audience that would listen to them performing "all night long" yet never really take it to heart. With that context I always saw the story as something more like a Christmas Carol, showing you a nightmare version of what you could become if you get consumed by your own despair like the patient did. Famous Last Words now has the patient broken but yet ready to carry on anyways. Is that still really cheesy? Definitely, but I like some cheesy so I'm ok with it. It was also really fun seeing you fall in love with this album, because it was my same experience. I never really got into it in its prime. After hearing all the Death Grips, Swans, and whatnot I gave this album a try and was blown away.
1: The Sharpest Lives 2: Mama 3: Sleep 4: Dead! 5: Cancer 6: The End. 7: I Don’t Love You 8: WTTBP 9: Teenagers 10: Famous Last Words 11: This Is How I Disappear 12: House of Wolves 13: Blood 14: Disenchanted Honorable Mentions: The Five Of Us Are Dying and Kill All Your Friends. I always associated those two with The Black Parade.
Man I LOVE disenchanted. The lyrics are amazing. The song is to me about how life starts off care free and then as a teen he gets pressured to be someone he's not but has heroes and then he sees his heroes sell out and he becomes disenchanted with life and everything goes wrong. I am super glad you loved the album and the fact you only disliked 3 songs and I love how you discuss your thoughts thoroughly on each track rather than just giving each song a number and moving on. I love how you analyze and express what the songs meant to you and how they hit you. I also love how you express what the lyrics mean to you but also explain how the instrumentals of each song hit you too. My list would be: 1. The End- 10+ 2. Dead! - 10+ 3. This is How I Disappear- 10++ 4. The Sharpest Lives- 9+ 5. Welcome to the Black Parade- 11² so good it's ridiculous. 6. I Don't Love You- 8 7. House of Wolves- 8 8. Cancer- 10 9. Mama- 10+ 10. Sleep- 10+ 11. Teenagers- 6 12. Disenchanted- 10++ 13. Famous Last Words- 9- 14. Blood- 8
My list: 1. mama 2. disenchanted 3. cancer 4. house of wolves 5. sleep 6. famous last words 7. the sharpest lives 8. this is how i disappear 9. welcome to the black parade 10. i don't love you 11. dead 12. teenagers 13. the end 14. blood
i might be biased because of the lyrics, but famous last words is so motivational and emotional to me that whenever i go through anything, it helps me cry it out and gives me the small push to keep going. i feel that watching it live and screaming “i am not afraid to keep on living” alongside the band and thousands of fans would be so euphoric but that’s just me lol
@@zeroara thank you so much!! you’re so lucky 😭 i live in southeast asia so my chances aren’t the highest for a tour but i’m keeping my fingers crossed!!
I still disagree about FLW, that's a fantastic track imo. But even though I enjoy Disenchanted too, I see your point there and have to agree it's the weakest track... Except for Blood... Can't forget about that important track Blood
Yeah, I know this is a late reply, but I agree with Brad on so many things in this video except FLW. The ending with all the "asleep or DEAAAAADDDDD!!!!!!" stuff is awesome and I think its a great way to finish off the album. I do agree with him, however, that they do ruin the guitar riff near the start with the "so many bright lights to cast a shadow" as its a bit of a weak follow up to the great guitar riff but otherwise, I think its awesome.
I don't think he would like it though, I don't really either. The only songs I actually like is Early Sunsets Over Monroeville and Demolition Lovers. I think those songs are amazing, however the rest of the album just doesn't do it for me.
sad2thecore some people don’t understand good music. For example most of the people in my school just listen to songs about f***ing b***es or making money
Exactly. The thing that really bothers me is when people just call it shitty emo music when in reality, it's not even close to that. It's one of the best albums I've ever listened to and it's so sad that some people can't understand how fantastic it really is.
Every time I go back to watch your reaction of The Black Parade every once in a while, it makes me give the appreciation it most definitely deserves. Having another view on it makes me remember all the little details in this album. This truly, to me, is one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard
The fandom is wired and (like in most fandoms) sometimes cringey, but most of the fandom is just very passionate about the band and sad, because they will not come back together and we lost our favorite band...
I thought I was the only one who loved Sleep, everyone always talks about it being the worst on the album because of its slow pacing in the beginning but dude, its intensity and explosive chorus not to mention the creepy recordings of Gerards nightmares just 🙌
My top worst to best: 14 Blood (Hidden track) 5/10 13 I don't love you 7/10 12 Disenchanted 7/10 11 House of wolves 8/10 10 The end 9/10 09 Teenagers 9/10 08 Sleep 10/10 07 Famous last words 10/10 06 This is how a disappear 10/10 05 Dead! 10/10 04 The sharpest lives 10/10 03 Welcome to the black parade 10/10 02 Cancer 10/10 01 Mama 10/10
personally there is two perspectives i get from famous last words, the first one is that at the end the patient have redeemed himself from his sins after going through this trip of soul observation and past regrets the previous songs offered, he feels forgiven and pure therefore he was ready to live what ever time he had left on the earth. i also like to think that he was out of consciousness and he really believed that he was dead and was seeing points in his life play in front of him especially the very bad ones like when he was a soldier at war, when he was an alcoholic and when he felt alienated from society(teenagers) after this big journey of redemption he wakes up and realizes that he isn’t dead and life has given him another chance: “am not afraid to keep on living I am not afraid to walk this world alone” “Nothing you can say can stop me going home” this gives a sign that the patient didn’t die or at least kept fighting his illness instead of giving up to it like in the beginning of the album where he was vulnerable and ready to go. “Awake and unafraid Asleep or dead” this leaves the ending open we don’t know if he lived or died but at least we know that he fought the good fight, maybe he kissed his loved ones after all and died peacefully with them surrounding him and not turned away. it also made me feel like the protagonist came to peace with his illness, realized that it had good in it, because had he not gotten it he wouldn’t ever review his life and observe past mistakes and change as a person at least this is my interpretation of the song sorry for rambling on for too long but i really really love this track and how open it is to different interpretations.
What about The Black Parades three hidden bonus tracks on their exclusive album? “My Way Home Is Through You (B-side)” “Kill All Your Friends (B-Side)” And “Heaven Help Us (B-side)”? Three excellent songs
editing god = Bradley, totally agree with sleep at number 1, its such an unforgiving track, if you haven't seen it then maybe react to 'the black parade is dead! (full) my chemical romance' its a full live performance of all the songs on the album and its amazing, especially cancer and sleep, they send chills down my spine
When I was a freshman in high school, I gave the girl I had a crush on a mixtape for her birthday. Like a literal, burned-on-a-CD mixtape. I tried to make it a thoughtful combination of what we both liked; she was really into Muse at the time, and I was *deep* in the MCR rabbit hole. I ended up putting "Sleep" on there because after thinking about it for a while, I decided that it was my favorite song off of The Black Parade. She appreciated the gift (tho I don't know if she ever checked that particular song out), but it's funny watching this and being validated on that choice so many years later.
my personal ranking: 1. welcome to the black parade (1000/10) 2. i don't love you (10+/10) 3. the sharpest lives (10/10) 4. famous last words (9+/10) 5. house of wolves (9/10) 6. mama (9-/10) 7. disenchanted (8+/10) 8. cancer (8/10) 9. sleep (8-/10) 10. this is how i disappear (8-/10) 11. teenagers (8-/10) 12. dead (7+/10) 13. blood (7/10) 14. the end (7-/10)
Gerard Bæ I’m pretty sure it’s because the band broke up, and this was their most popular song, or something like that idk tbh it’s something stupid like that
Letterbomb is the best song on the album, so it makes sense. Though, Whatsername is a close second. Though those aren’t my favorites. The only surprising pick would be Extraordinary Girl.
Disenchanted is really underrated It's actually one of my favorite song, but not a lot of people even the Killjoys really enjoy this song or even talk about a lot.
Wait what! Famous last words is one of the bests. Must agree with most of your top tho, great ranking, I like your reviews. You should react to the black parade b-sides and Conventional weapons maybe
(I'm Italian, sorry for my pizza English) Hey Brad, your reactions and reviews are so damn good,it made me listen to music genres that I never thought I would like. Even if I know that there are so many people asking you to do this I genuinely want to see a "I brought you my bullets you brought me your love" review by you. You are certainly not gonna like the whole thing but a few songs will make you not regret doing this.
I mean like I consider myself sorta emo but it doesnt define me.. Why should bands be labeled as emo just because emo people tend to listen to them?? That doesnt mean the band itself or the music they make is emo.
A band that was labeled emo/edgy was Gorillaz. Although they started out on the rather edgy side, they are almost the complete opposite of emo. In the comment section of some of their songs, you see shit like “ThIs MaKeS DePrEsSiOn FeEl GoOd” and “LeMmE gEt My EyElInEr” I fucking hate labelling, especially when part of the fandom is so good, and other parts so terribly cringy.
Gerard Way himself said that the band is NOT EMO. Also people only like Disenchanted bc Mikey Way wanted to keep it on the album, so die hard fans want to respect his opinion/decision. Also Gerards writing is still fantastic on it so
Tbh the Black Parade is one of my favorite albums, and I completely understand how you feel about the ending. A couple weeks ago you reacted to Palaye Royale in a livestream, and I honestly feel like you didn't give them a fair time so you need to react to their first album Boom Boom Room Side A and their second album Boom Boom Room Side B that comes out the 28th.
in my opinion, i thought Dead was the best song on the record, it was high energy, explosive, eDgY and it fit the themes of the album very well. that being said i see why you had your opinions, and the video was incredibly well put together
I love Famous Last Words because it feels like they really thought about what their fans (mostly depressed young people) might need to hear. I feel like it might have been almost irresponsible to end an album like this on a dark note. And as uncomfortable as overly optimistic songs usually make me, this songs really pulls off *hope* in a way that feels genuine imo, and ties the whole album together.
As much as I do love Teenagers. It does ruin the albums context mainly 'cause I feel Disenchanted is supposed to be what happens straight ofter sleep where the patient dies and is supposed to be him feeling shitty about dying like a bitch. Then Famous Last words is him accepting that he died and showing a brave face as he walks forward into the afterlife
Sleep has always been my favorite song out of everything, not only in this album or this band, but every song out there in general can't even compare. I've tried finding other songs as gut-wrenching as this but it seems I just can't. There's nothing like this, nothing as surreal or makes you go "Oh shit" whenever it comes up on the playlist. Sleep is pretty underrated but for once, FOR ONCE I find someone who appreciates this for what it is and puts the song on a pedestal. Geez thank you!
The concluding song should have been just never ending pure insanity. Like a ten minute mix between Sleep and House Of Wolves but it just has no predictability and regretful yelling in the background that you can barley hear because it is blocked out by him having no apologies and that he'd rather be in hell than heaven and that he's happy where he has been sent.
You know, I used to think Disenchanted was kind of boring, but it has grown on me so much that now it's one of my favorite songs. I guess I didn't feel it was important until I listened to it during a low point in my life. I also like Blood, lol, but yeah, that whole minute of silence is just annoying.
Here's my guess for the rankings (mostly based off the Black Parade reaction). I'll see how I did after watching the video! 1: Mama 2: Sleep 3: House of Wolves 4: Teenagers 5: Welcome to the Black Parade 6: Dead! 7: This Is How I Disappear 8: The Sharpest Lives 9: I Don't Love You 10: Cancer 11: The End. 12: Famous Last Words 13: Disenchanted EDIT: DAMN, House of Wolves so low and Cancer so high was a surprise. Looks like I shouldn't have gone all in on explosiveness.
