I kinda like Ash V Chuck because of Bayleef just going sumo wrestler... kinda wish he used Noctowl though rather than Pikachu (more fitting). Also fully expect Ash V Wattson to be no. 1 when you do Hoenn. Only gym in the anime to truly show what its like in the games (lol).
Ash vs. Clair. It's like Charizard's whole story arc led to that win, the disobedience and then training in the valley. Overall, Johto had some great battles. Half his Kanto badges were flukes, this was where Ash really started to come into his own as a trainer.
My favorite Gym Battle was against Faulkner because it was an instance where an early Gym Leader have stronger reserves for when experienced trainers come to challenge them.
I feel like Noctowl got a raw deal in the series. Its only real big victory in the series was Morty, I feel Noctowl could have been used against Chuck given flying's advantage over fighting and Noctowl having psychic abilities which would also help against fighting. I mean, it's a shiny Pokemon, I'd put it out more!
After revisiting the Johto anime recently I can confirm that the Falkner, Jasmine and Clair battles were the best! Good strats, team composition and just great battling all around! Good list bro!
Ash Using His Noctowl's Foresight to beat Morty reminds me of me using My Furrets Foresight to Sweep Morty! And I didn't even know how this Battle played out until just now!
I remember watching all of these as a kid but that battle with Jasmine was always one of my favorites. I always love when an OP move or strategy by a Pokémon is used against itself to win.
The Jotho series has a special place in my heart, cause it's the series that I got introduced to Pokémon. For some reason, I'd always liked the battle between Ash vs Chuck. Mainly because of Bayleaf. Ash's Bayleaf is one of my favorites to this day and I STILL think is should've evolved into Meganium back in the day. The battle just had that focused feeling into it and Bayleaf put in most of the work. I liked the other ones as well, but this one stood out for me the most. Well, at least he has a Quilava that evolved in the Sinnoh series though.
I feel similarly about the Chuck battle, I love how Bayleef toughed it out and won for Ash. Even though I ranked it 7th, I feel like any of the battles 7th-4th could swap around. But the top three are clear for me
I can't wait to see the eventual DP one and see how you put ash vs Roark as I think the rematch was really well put together and did an amazing job of showing how sinnoh gym leaders don't go easy
I love watching the Ash V Bugsy battle just because I never expected Metapod to get redemption after ash met that Samurai guy in the woods and their Metapods just used harden the whole time
Fun video! The one that always stood out to me was the Morty battle since ever-ignored Noctowl carried the whole thing. But this video reminded about great some of the other battles were too
Thanks! I also love the Morty battle for it being Noctowl's best effort, but really that's only because Noctowl only battled against Morty and in that Clair battle that got interrupted. Pikachu and Cyndaquil were hogging a lot of screentime in this region's Gym Battles haha
@@EliteTrainerMark It's a shame Johto was so poorly written and Cyndaquil got all this screen time but never really had an arc (except for the fire thing which was resolved very early on) and didn't evolve until a random team rocket battle at the end of Diamond & Pearl
If it were up to me, I would have had Cyndaquil evolve after defeating Steelix, and evolve again at the Johto League. And of course, we could pretty easily take 3-5 filler episodes and dedicate them to Cyndaquil character development, but obviously you could make the same case for any character; human or Pokémon
For Chuck, it is quite surprise for Pikachu lost, Bayleef is nice choice for Poliwrath, but for fighting Gym Noctowl would be a perfect choice. For Clare, we knew that Animator messed up for not evolving Ash's Pokemon much, so they need to bring back the old folks
The outside the box strategizing that turn the tables became a staple for anime gym battles started here in Johto, we saw a glimpse of it in the orange islands (but it was a mixture of strategy with sheer dumb luck)

Yeah, Cyndaquil had a hell of a résumé haha. Defeated Bugsy's Scyther, defeated Morty's Gastly, defeated Jasmine's Steelix, defeated Pryce's Dewgong, and most importantly of all... one-shot Whitney's Nidorina and scared her Clefairy, causing Whitney to forfeit Cyndaquil MVP
I think it would be a really good video if you made a list of trainers you think fill out all of the ultra class that we haven’t seen in the journeys tournament. It would probably include many elite four members but it’d be cool to see the others. It’d basically be a top 100 anime trainers list
I have a similar idea for that, not a list of trainers though. My plan was to make a video discussing the World Coronation Series, and part of that discussion was going to be who could have / should have been in the competition.
Great video ranking. Ash vs Cllair is definitely the best in Jhoto. I got to say though, really wished Ash used Heracross in some of these battles, mainly against Whitney, Chuck same with Totodile. I feel as though he used Pikachu a bit too often.
Yeah, using Pikachu in every battle was totally unnecessary. Especially when we look at the numbers overall, and see that he used Heracross in zero, Totodile in just one, and Noctowl in, well like one and a half battles
Falkner is such a unique Gym Leader in the anime because he's treated like the 6th or 7th Gym Leader of the region despite being the first, he's got a strong team and they gave him interesting Pokémon, not letting his game counterpart restrict what they could do with him in the anime
Yeah, the Johto Gyms in the og games are mostly pushovers (for Whitney, I recommend getting the Machop trade in Goldenrod, combo Focus Energy & Karate Chop for a satisfying sweep), but the anime actually showed them being incredibly clever and resourceful. Also, despite the chicanery with Whitney, none of Ash's Johto Badges were given out of pity or compassion, but honest hard work. It was very satisfying to see Ash gain a level of maturity after the somewhat cringe moments from Kanto and Orange Islands.
Here is my ranking of Ash’s Johto gym battles. 8: Ash vs Bugsy. I am not sure if it was just because I was super tired when I watched it, but it was just boring. 7: Ash vs Whitney. It honestly did not matter that it was a 1 v 3 in the rematch because Nidorina and Clefairy got swept by Cyndaquill anyway. Ash’s strategy against Miltank was good though. 6: Ash vs Pryce. I just threw game logic straight out the window and also, why was Cyndaquill able to like survive underwater? 5: Ash vs Chuck. I loved the Bayleaf vs Machoke bit. 4: Ash vs Morty. This was definitely Noctowls “shining” moment (ha ha, it’s a shiny.) It also was just good. This final showdown between Noctowl and Gengar was just soooooooo good. 3: Ash vs Jasmine. Steeling is a beast. The only flaw with the battle is that Cyndaquill should have evolved. Quilava vs Steelix would have been much more exciting. But it is still great. 2: Ash vs Clair. Ash having his 3 best Kanto Pokémon take on Clair’s Kingdra, Gyarados, and Dragonair was great. Charizard is just too much stronger than Dragonair, I mean Clair should not have had a chance. They could have just made Kingdra het strongest Pokémon or have had Dragonair evolve into Dragonite during the battle. But 2 evolutions in like 3 episodes just seems unlikely. 1: Ash vs Falkner. I don’t know why I love this battle so much. I mean, am I crazy to put this in my top 10 gym battles? Charizard vs Pudgeot, I mean, I was going nuts. Ash vs Falkner was probably why I even played the Johto games and kept watching the anime. It was honestly because the Kanto series was awful. Well that’s my ranking of Ash’s Johto gym battles.
My favorite gym battles from Johto are the first and eighth gym. In Johto Ash actually earn his gym all his badges unlike in Kanto where he only earn three badges by defeating the gym leader the rest were handed to him and team rocket sub in for their boss.
in the anime, charizard uses seismic toss to delete pokemon. in GSC, blissey uses seismic toss to delete the clock, your team's PP, and your will to exist
These were great to watch as a kid and still great to watch now! For me they actually hold up pretty well, which I can't say for every Original Series battle

Honestly, the Falkner fight felt like they were doing the inverse of what happens in the game. A Kanto trainer was fighting the Johto Gym Leader at their best. Of course, after this fight is when all Ash's old Pokémon started leaving his party to make room for the Johto Pokémon. So they could show off the new people kids could find in 'the current game.' Also, it likely led to the tradition in the anime of Ash dumping his team each region to start fresh. So kids would make team with the Pokémon Ash is using in game instead of wondering why most of Ash's Pokémon aren't in 'the current game.' Ignore the irony that Gen 2 is probably the generation that relied heaviest on the old gen Pokémon. Which is also why Ash after this region (not counting gen 5) only has one of the regions starters. Still it would have been interesting if it had continued like that instead of intentionally resetting. To be fair, it would have been difficult for Ash to have beaten Whitney conventionally without just adding Pokémon to the team just to deal with her.
I have to admit that the only Hoenn gym battle I remember is against Wattson (because it was basically a meme; homage to the garbage-tier Kanto gyms). Don't know why I can't remember the rest, it's not like they were forgettable or anything.
My ranking looks like this: 8) Whitney 7) Chuck 6) Pryce 5) Bugsy 4) Jasmine I put Jasmine right after Bugsy because it was a very similar finish: block with a spin, flamethrower the spin. 3) Morty 2) Clair 1) Falkner Figuring out the split second gap after Agility to turn around and launch a Fire Spin was one of the smartest things Ash did throughout Johto.
i think the battle against Whitney was good and not nearly as stupid as the battle against Price who just gave up because he pittied Pikachu. At least against Whitney in the unofficial match he showed some growth and used the terrain to his advantage.
Idk what version of Ash vs Pryce you watched but Pryce did not forfeit because he had pity for Pikachu, he forfeited because he didn't want to see Pikachu hurt Piloswine anymore. Ash was very close to winning anyways.
Yeah, I had no idea at first that rollout was a rock-type move until much later on. It's especially bad for fire types and flying types, which I had back when I first played Pokemon Gold. I didn't think to get me a fighting-type until I got HeartGold and Soulsilver years later, lol. But that rollout does major damage the more it's used in succession, and I was like "Miss, you damn Miltank!" But nope.
Whitney's was fine. Miltank was the main hurdle and Ash would have easily taken out Clefairy again. Ash beating Miltank twice would just be as redundant as beating Clefairy again. Also yeah Ash vs Jasmine is massively underrated.
if Pikachu dies mid battle ten he revives after the match is done this weird mechanic allowed him to fight Paul and Tobias with out needing a rest compared to his other mons

As Great as all these Pokemon Battles are thier will never be a Pokemon Trainer Stornger and also more strategic making every single second of it count in the Pokemon Anime more then The Queen Pokemon Champion for the Shinon Region Cynthia and her Pokemon Battle against Ash in the Pokemon Journey's Anime TV Series!
Ngl Chikorita/bayleef was always my least favourite pokemon, and in bayleefs case it was this episode where it beat my favourite pokemon at the time machoke that left 6 year old me seething
I'm sorry. But electric hitting ground fuckery is an immediate bottom of the list for me. Same with ghost hitting normal shenanigans and vice versa. My bottom of this list is probably Pryce then Morty above. Chuck's battle or Jasime's would be 6. They are totally immemerable for me. I'll have to rewatch em to remember more than these screenshots.
I am betting Champion Cynthia could defeat every single Gym Leader's and also Elite Four member, and also Champion with her Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Team of 6 easier than any other trainer in the Jhoto Region in Generation 2!
