That's a pretty solid ranking. My fave is Tell Tale, then 1-3, then Basement, then Another Self. Tell Tale has the best sonics and instrumentation, and it's an amazing set.
Thanks for spotlighting this great series. Always look forward to the next release in the Dylan Bootleg series. I agree that Tell Tale Signs is perhaps the one I return to the most. The versions of Mississippi are so nice.
I like your ranking. I would include biograph as one of his bootlegs. Maybe the original from the bootleg. It has 18 unreleased songs More than some of the other bootleg series releases.
I think that I'm in agreement on this ranking except that maybe, I would choose your number two as number one. 'Tell Tale Signs' is a revelation to me. Far better than any official album Dylanhas released. Having said that, I would certainly not fall out over this.
Two that blew my mind were Another Self Portrait and Basement Tapes Raw. Like most people, I considered the original Self Portrait nonessential. And I don't know about everybody else but I thought the officially released version of The Basement Tapes was too overproduced and overdubbed. And, hey, I love The Band but that isn't what these songs needed. BUT, the Bootleg Series edition Another Self Portrait shows how those songs should have been released. Same with Basement Tapes Raw, the after the fact meddling was eliminated, the sound cleaned up, and now these are two of my favorites of the Bootleg Series.
Love this video..I rank Rolling Thunder higher..I saw two of the shows in 1975 at Maple Leaf Gardens so it has a special place in my heart...I rank the Self Portrait Deluxe box high as well..Trouble No More set really surprised me..I wish I had the deluxe version..agree it ranks high..can’t argue with your top two picks..So happy I have another Dylan freak to communicate with❤️❤️I think you, myself and Jeff at Calico Silver are the three most passionate Dylan fans in the VC..👍👍👍👍👍glen
😲 Thanks, Glen! That's sooo cool you saw him in 75. I love the two videos from that tour. One indoor show and one outdoor. They circulated on VHS for years. Now I have them on DVD. I didn't like the Scorcese movie much. I was really bummed and even more bummed when I heard it was faked. Ain't that just like Bob though, lol! I was so looking forward to that film.
Aren't Bootlegs illegal? how did you get these albums at Tower records, Wiz , Barnes and Nobles or some other place? are Mr. Tambourine man and All along the Watch tower on any of these bootlegs?
Hey Mark, that's a loaded questions with plenty of long, exhaustive answers. I have bought these online, at record shows, sometimes in my local record store, etc. I've never gone to any of the stores you mention, because they charge insane prices for CDs. I buy the huge majority of my CDs used in independent local stores. Sometimes those stores have what are arguably bootlegs. Watch Brendon Snyder's video on bootlegs for a better explanation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2jdu8uHascw.html
I misunderstood your question, because I just posted a Bob video with actual bootlegs and it says one person viewed it. But it also says it's blocked because I played Bob in the background. I didn't see that your comment was on this video. Sorry about that. These are all legitimate releases by Dylan. He calls it the Bootleg series. They've all been released after the fact and many made the bootleg circles previously.
Are there any “all along the watchtower “ minus the harmonica...I’ve been looking for that as I think it would be a great acoustic up tempo song without the jarring harmonica...
