I agree. The dark descent was so good with atmosphere. The bunker kept me tense the whole time. The sound design is phenomenal. A machine for pigs was okay. Had a really disturbing story but the romoval of the sanity and the lantern being infinite was a step back. Im playing rebirth right now. So far ive just using the bracelet. So far its not been scary at all.

The fact that The Bunker was genuinely good and well recieved is something that genuinely makes me happy and hopeful for frictional game's future. I don't expect them to make a bunch of new games or become more active, but I know that if/when they make their next move, there's a good chance it will be great. After so long it is good to know that FG are back on the gaming scene with quality stuff! EDIT: I agree that The Bunker may be the scariest one of all, I would not have been able to play that back then when I was younger..

Bunker has alot of good things, but one i noticed and isnt talked much, is the Custom Stories option... this was a staple of Dark Descent because there are some really good ones and it gave the game a longer lifetime of sorts... meanwhile Im not even sure if Rebirth had many made and i think that feature was nonexistant in Machine for Pigs. The downside is that the Bunker's is more complicated and dificult to use from what ive heard, but theres still potential for alot of shenanigans with it.

I wanted to cry I got so scared. The Bunker is by far my favourite in the series. I love the change to where noise is a pseudo sanity meter. Making it a race against the generator makes the monster feel so oppressive, you need to hurry but not attract it with noise. But in the nature of gas resources it becomes a game of risks where you have to make decisions which potentially get you killed; break a door for loot, kill a group of rats early, sprint to make it back to the generator in time for the refuel, etc
@saladcat8305
@saladcat8305 11 месяцев назад
I always kinda found the insanity meter stupid, and it would have been espesically stupid for The Bunker. You're a soldier in WW1 and French the only thing you fear is non smelly cheese and good food. And also, just because it's dark doesn't mean you'll go insane like cmon

@@saladcat8305 Most of Lovecraft’s stories do a good job of showcasing that your mind does in fact have limits. They are fictional stories; but realistically, your mind can only process so much at a time. If it’s overloaded with things (especially horrific things no man has ever seen before on top of the stress of everything else you’re dealing with), you will reach a boiling point (insanity). The ending of the movie “Smile” is also a good showcase of this very thing in effect. The human brain is much more vulnerable than you’re making it out to be.

The bunker has truly got to be the scariest for me cause it's near similar to alien isolation except for the semi open world and the random generation to traps and codes making any experience extremely fun, like all the things you can do to keep the monster at bay is so easy but very worthwhile because you don't have that constant fear of death like putting barrels and huge boxes in front of the holes actually stopping the monster from exploring as long as it's right up against it (if you set up multiple he'll try 2 exploration attempts and after he'll usually give up) but in most areas there's just not enough stuff to block the holes so you have to stay on your toes

1. The Dark Decent 2. The Bunker 3. A Machine For Pigs 4. Rebirth The Dark Decent is great in all aspects of atmosphere, good and different kind of monsters and great story. The Bunker may be a bit too short but I liked the idea of a bunker and being trapped in it with a monster. The monster was great but a bit lackluster that it was the only one. I liked the crafting in it but wasn’t a fan of the gun and grenade aspect as I prefer Amnesia being that you’re in a disadvantage to the monsters and the only thing you can do to survive is to run and/or hide. AMFP, probably the best story in my opinion but as the video mentioned, the pigs are way too dumb and I never felt threatened by them. Rebirth… though I enjoyed the game more than AMFP it gets the last spot mainly because the story was very lackluster, I hated that you didn’t die because of what happened to the character you’re playing as. Took away alot of the scary part from it as it made me feel I didn’t have anything to lose.

The gun is just a tool. It's just a loud firestarter/lock breaker/occasional life saver. You're at a massive disadvantage given the monster can't die and there's very limited ammo. All the weapons are just loud options to get the job done with the perk that they can also scare the monster away for a few mins, but even then timing all of them except the gun is incredibly difficult given the monster runs fast AF. I don't know why you'd want to have fewer options to solve puzzles given that's what survival horror has always been about, from Resident Evil to now. Making choices to overcome obstacles without a lot of resources that all have tradeoffs.
@martyfromnebraska1045
@martyfromnebraska1045 4 месяца назад
Oh, and as someone else has pointed out, you can literally just die and checkpoint your way through TDD. The Bunker is the only game that makes you worry about dying. It's been a while, but I wonder if they've put in difficulty options to remove that while keeping most other stuff at "normal" levels. Even then, you still don't even encounter real danger for a fat minute in TDD. In The Bunker it's off to the races.

I've yet to play Machine for Pigs, but I had played TDD a couple of years ago and loved it dearly. I just recently played Bunker and then Rebirth back to back, and I think they were both fantastic. I'm saying this because it seems Rebirth gets the same bandwagon hate, and I don't understand why. It starts off a bit slow, I will admit, but once it gets going, I can honestly say I felt just as tense as (if not more so) while playing Bunker. The story is very intriguing and gets out of this world, but not too far to complicate it. It makes a lot of sense of the events of TDD, and I just don't understand why anyone would ever say to skip it. I thought it was incredible. Definitely will end up trying out Machine for Pigs now too, since it's clear that the fan base seems quite biased.

@@BeyondEmpyrean76 Rebirth for me was a little complicated. It took a little too long for it to start doing anything, and I think the monster design was a little uninspired. It definitely had its moments, especially with the first few areas in the desert being chased around by the ghoul which eventually led to the core concept of Amnesia Bunker. I also liked the story to some extent, it was definitely hard to wrap my head around it. I think I just didnt like Tasi as the main character and the whole baby thing with the mechanics revolving around it. It is my least favourite out of all but still I dont HATE it. Honestly, as a combat focused horror fan, I wouldn't really blame Amnesia for changing survival horror. In comparison to most horror games, Amnesia actually wants to be a video game. It forces you to experiment with its physics, to manage your inventory, to play smart. It still keeps certain principles of a survival horror game. What I *would* put the blame on however is Outlast. There's literally no gameplay in this series. No inventory management apart from batteries, no interactive environment, no safe rooms. Even the enemies didn't look impressive. Frankly, calling Outlast a game is generous.

1. Dark descent 2. The bunker 3. A machine for pigs 4. Rebirth I quite enjoyed the story in A machine for pigs and Rebirth to a lesser extent. Something I've noticed though is that when the Amnesia games go in depth on story, the horror elements go out the window. I think the games would benefit greatly from being purposefully vague and not spell everything out. The more sci fi areas of Rebirth really removes all horror in my opinion. This is not the case for Soma though, which in my opinion might be Frictional Games masterpiece and best game to date. There is another type of horror present for Soma. More isolation and emptiness, the story in that game adds to the horror a hundred times over.

I can't say where I would place the Bunker, just yet, in the rankings, but so far I would agree with your placement of them so far. For me, I really like the first one, Dark Descent, because of it's fear elements, though I though that the game world in Machine for pigs was more interesting than it. But the story, and level layout, in the 2nd game was a lot more confusing than the first. And Rebirth, while interesting, was just deeply disturbing and uncomfortable to me...

Rebirth was honestly only scary when you first came to the first town where you had to put on the radio and make a bullet. And also when you were in the labyrinth, those parts were the only ones that had tension, the rest was alot more of just programmed chasing, with not even a scary loudness from the monsters. A machine for pigs was honestly very scary to me, I remember that the game just felt alot like you were lonely, but someone was watching you. Not many parts were you were with the monsters lurking, so it built tension alot more than any of the other games imo. The sounds you could hear, and the flickering of the lamp actually made it scary for me. Have not played the bunker yet, im excited for it.
@dynaa4168
@dynaa4168 3 месяца назад
Rebirth was actually really scary throughout though. The premise of losing your child and also your friends turning to monsters. It's not just the sounds and graphics that make it scary. If you take into account the history and the character background, Rebirth is also scary. You can't just judge how scary a game is by lights flickering and how intense the tension in a game is if what happened to the character isn't as scary and the character isn't in a much high stakes situation.
@berka8587
@berka8587 3 месяца назад
@@dynaa4168 Imo it just wasnt that scary, I agree that the story does matter. But gameplay matters alot too, that is what you are playing after all and in my personal experience I only thought it was scary when I was uncertain of the things that were going to happen. Eventually it felt like the game was too predictable in its sequences, I knew it was a chase sequence before it happened for example which didnt make it as tense as I knew I just needed to run to a point where I will be safe. Rebirth is still scary, and has a good story. In comparison it is not as great in its elements as Dark descent or Bunker in my opinion
@berka8587
@berka8587 3 месяца назад
@@dynaa4168 Btw I think that the story in a game can be great and the game can still be bad. And the story can be pretty dry/bad, but the game is still good. It depends on how the mechanics of the game treats the situation of the story. For example I think the dark descent did a nice job with telling the player that you are in fact scared of the dark, whoch implants the idea that the dark is infact dangerous and scary. Or talking about the monsters when youre in a place where you hear noises. It connected to the gameplay very well and I think the game was great because of a 50/50 split between story and gameplay. Bunker for example also has an extremely scary story, but the gameplay is the real killer in that game. I couldnt even be bothered to read all the notes, because 1. I was scared shitless that the monster could attack me while reading and 2. I already love the game by its gameplay so the story can be read afterwards. That game is like 25% story and 75$% gameplay that made it good imo

The Bunker definitely topped the first game for me all the way. And it’s funny how at first Amnesia was trying to stay away from being like Resident Evil and with the Bunker they fully embraced survival horror in their own unique way. Amnesia and Resident Evil can coexist in harmony 😂

So my only introduction to horror games period is Resident Evil 7 and The Last of Us. (I’ve played one puppet combo game). I just got Bunker on Gamepass and as terrifying as it is, I love it. The closest thing I’ve experienced to it would be fighting a bloater on the last of us, in grounded. Even then this is way scarier. Never found those games that scary in comparison to this but this takes the cake and asks for more.

I would argue about the fact that Rebirth should be the worst of them all, ik that Machine for pigs was very limiting and all but it was still a good game while rebirth was like mehh, you were thrown from normal world into shadow realm randomly, some actions didn't make sense, many features like compass was only used at the beginning and slightly at the end, lanter was useless and you could rely more on matches

That one hit a homerun into a Grand Slam. A bit too well rather. I never thought that a game can turn my gaming chair into a porcelain toilet, but also gave me weeks long existential crisis, and ludicrously hard to finish alone. That on top of being an absolutely realistic game where I can see all the magical aspect encroaching into current state of the world already.

@Defaulted Reset ngl, Soma is easily one of the most depressing games I've played. Sure there are plenty of sad, horrifying, or gruesome horror games out there. But few games have captured genuine hopelessness like Soma did. The WAU forces things to be alive, and in turn subjects to them to endless purgatory at the bottom of the ocean. There are plenty of people you see who had hopes and dreams and could do nothing but just watch as the world and Pathos II fell around them. They can't die because of the WAU, and what's the point of living if everybody on the planet is dead?

Honestly, Machine for pigs could have been so much better, loved the music in there, story was ok but gameplay.. did not hit for me. Next Rebirth, I know I was invested in the mystery behind it, the areas were also interesting to explore, but it was still missing something for me. Dark Descent, classic, story, music, monsters honestly still creeps me to this day, it was really dark which is good. Bunker boy.. finished not long ago, enjoyed it! i think it legit be my favorite. I liked the new take on amnesia, you can fight the monster back, the monster still creeped me, it was sad the moment you get the story. For me probably the most enjoyable one. Everyone likes something differently but for me it goes like this yeah

I recently revisited all 4 games to get 100% achievements. If I hadn't marathoned the whole series, I would have agreed with your ranking. But after my experience, TDD is the best. Of course, The Bunker is a great game, enhanced in many aspects. And, yes, it's better than TDD. But the reason why it's better is it's standing on the shoulder of the giant. I think TDD deserves more credit for establishing the basic concept of the genre. Well, Rebirth is trash. It has lots of connections with TDD in stoeytelling perspective, Vitae, Orb, Shadow, Dark World, etc... but other than that, it's pretty mediocre. And Machine for Pigs... it is not even a videogame. The whole thing is just an interactive cutscene.

The bunker was definitely the scariest of them all, it freaked me out to the point I almost didn’t want to continue the game anymore. Also the monster is barely scripted and very unpredictable which made it so much scarier. Not to mention the incredible sound design and in particular the absolutely ptsd inducing sound the beast makes when moving inside the walls. The constant threat, the time constraints induced by the limited generator fuel and meanwhile having to think straight/use your survival instincts in order to progress had me stressing the entire playthrough. And then there’s the hopelessness of being trapped inside a claustrophobic and desolated bunker in the middle of a ww1 battlefield, surrounded by the enemy. The entire setting and story fits so well within the Amnesia Series. Once again Frictional Games delivered and created a horror masterpiece.

The atmosphere is super well done and genuinely keeps the tension high from start to finish, the feeling of dread was perfect and I love and hate how they made the safe area feel so comfortable only to take it away later on.
