It's fascinating how both American and Chinese people I've met; two countries sort of in their own bubble, and have been raised to have certain attitudes of what World War II was; have always had a dire opinion of Dunkirk, completely missing the point of the film. I came out of a theatre in Shenzhen, Guangdong, after one of the early screenings, and the locals around me were saying, "but where was the victory?" "they made a film about losing?" "Nothing happened". While us Europeans just chuckled and slapped our foreheads. I remember Quentin Tarantino on some podcast talking about Dunkirk as well, it's really worth a listen. I think it's on RU-vid.
Not snobby at all, definitely different perspectives and just how people are raised. It’s always interesting and insightful to hear something from a different point of view. Especially from someone outside your usual area or place that you live
I'm an American and I'd largely agree with you but mainly because most people aren't motivated enough to educate themselves. Sure, they taught WW2 to us in a certain way in school, but all you have to do is peruse the internet these days to find a much more baseline retelling of what actually happened. Until about late 1943, 1944, the allies were getting DESTROYED in Europe whereas most of our education rarely touched upon most of the early war in Europe. To be fair, we weren't a part of it, but I happen to feel like that's why we weren't taught it. We didn't do our part in the early part of the war on the western front.
I'm shocked when people say Tenet is a great movie. If you at all focus on anyone but the main character the movie becomes a complete mess. It ends up losing a lot of it's audience in favor of a grander plot, one that most people will claim to have understood. But, when compared side-by-side to a movie like Inception it's painfully obvious that Tenet is much more confusing, has a lack of starpower, and the plotline is much more immature. There is no bad guy to Inception- It's a cast full of imperfect characters. Tenet? Can't let the bad European yacht guy have his way. It trades story-telling for substance in so many different ways.
That’s a great idea we will have to see if we can make that happen! We did something like that at the end of last year. We all grabbed our top 5 movies of 2023 and gave our top 5 movies, but no repeats. So we had 15 movies total. That was pretty fun too
How can a not bad but very flawed movie like Tenet win nr. 1 spot?! It’s got more plot holes than any swiss cheese. And the character are so one dimensional.
@@DukesTheater the movie just speaks for itself by not having detailed plot-points. The suspense and realism that Nolan is always striving for flourishes in this film. Dunkirk might not have deep character analysis but the event itself is what propels it. Like many, I did not connect to it the first time, but by my second, third, fourth viewing the movie became something special to me.
The guy complaining about Nolan movies being too long, I wonder what he thinks of Lord of the Rings movies, particularly the extended edition of them that have four hours run time for each movie in the triology. Personally, I don't mind even four hour movies if they are engaging.
