One thing I like about Kai as a villain is compared to Tai lung and Shen he actually respects Po, he’s the only one that basically doesn’t go “really, a panda is the dragon warrior?”
Because he knows what pandas can do. He is a master of Chi who learned that from pandas themselves, ofc he respects Po. I'd say Shen kinda does too, or else he wouldn't murder most pandas in fear of being defeated
@@heyitsmira17 Shen didn't respect po (at first) though he literally laughed when he saw him. He was afraid of the dragon warrior, but not Po specifically
@@user-gp5yz5yz4x I mean, he laughed bc Po was being carried upstairs by one of his guards lmao. But he always considered him a threat, or else he wouldn't have tried to kill him right away (like he did with all of the other pandas). In Shen's mind, he's always one step ahead of everyone else. I don't think he was afraid of the dragon warrior, bc the dragon warrior could be literally anyone. He's always been afraid of pandas due to the prophecy
@@heyitsmira17Shen was more so scared of the prophecy, not Po. He was so scared in fact he fulfilled his own prophecy. Kinda like a certain Greck who killed his own father and married his mother.
I think Tai Lung making fun of Po makes sense mainly bc you gotta understand in the film Tai has a lot of pride and the fact that an animal who doesn't seem worthy became a dragon warrior he thinks it's silly and stupid and honestly it works bc of Tai's character
Personally I loved Humpty's character arc. The entire movie he talks about how he doesn't belong anywhere and how he's not a "person, bird, or even food". And when the one person who treated him like family cuts him out, he wanted revenge. He has a desire, fear, and misbelief. And in the end he gets to be exactly where he belongs. At the same time it's like a Count of Monte Cristo story.
@@finalmountain it gotta be said you completely missed the point behind Humpty's motivation and actions. He didn't "betray" Puss because he didn't want to stop stealing or because they needed to steal to find the golden goose. He betrayed puss because he felt betrayed after puss became the hero of the town and at that point hardly cared about finding the golden goose anymore. It was as if he lost the only friend he ever had and if you like the movie with the dumb bears (excuse my venting I still like that movie I just think its overpraised) you would understand that its COMPLETELY within Puss's character to let fame go to his head and stop caring about what truly matters, further justifying Humpty's actions despite obviously still being very villainous indeed. Makes it so that the audience can somewhat sympathize with him. Not saying he's an amazing villain but he's at least better than some others that were placed above him for me
@@nielslehnen6076I appreciate your points. My opinion hasn’t changed, but I’m glad people like you have in depth reasons for why you sympathies with Humpy As for The Last Wish. The general consensus is that it’s a massive step up from its predecessor. That’s why it gets loads more hype. Unless you have some good points against this agreement I suggest you let those opinions slide
I actually feel bad for Prince Charming being so low on this ranking. He could have been a much better antagonist if he just had better writing, along with the majority of Shrek The Third. Stepping out of his Mother's Shadow and no longer being held back as a "mama's boy" was such an interesting step for this character. It was just poorly executed.
@@Zorro7269they’re saying that unlike some other villains on the list, prince charming is really good conceptually and could work super well if only the execution wasn’t off. meanwhile others just don’t work at all even as an idea and should’ve been scrapped from the start
While he doesn't play a traditional villain role, I consider Stoick from the first HTTYD film to be an incredible antagonist. There is something incredibly heartwrenching about watching Hiccup struggle again and again to try and gain his father's approval, only for it to be ripped away the moment he finally does. The argument he has with his father at the climax of the film always gives me chills.
agreed! "They've killed hundreds of us." "And we've killed *thousands* of them!" is still such a raw exchange even after all these years. httyd is a masterpiece
@@Zorro7269when you clock into the fact that it’s explained by the end that the *reason* most dragons attacked Berk and were so desperate or aggressive, was *quite literally* because their lives were at stake. Remember the Queen? The Red Death? She *starved* the dragons in the community, and continuously forced them to dump in sacrifice after sacrifice to feed her. And if you didn’t give enough? Same thing that happened to that poor Gronckle. Stoick doesn’t *know* that, and he doesn’t *care* to know. That’s what makes it so amazing, he’s arrogant and doesn’t believe anything else is at play beyond “they’re evil monsters”. Hiccup taking the time to learn WHY they do that really does show such an amazing juxtaposition between them. Stoick never stopped to think “why”, so he only attacked back. Hiccup took the time to find and bond with a dragon, *directly proving* that they are NOT monsters, at least, not for *good reason.*
Personally, I actually love how overly genocidal and petty Gallaxhar was. It was what actually made him a fun villain. He was basically DreamWorks' biggest irredeemable monster before Jack Horner made it cool again.
As a man who prefers openly dark villains over twist villains, Lord Shen will always be my top favorite🔥 However, as far as writing goes, the only villain I might place over him here is Rameses. Mostly because of everything Aldone said, and also because he was real.
@@Mahlak_Mriuani_Anatman I like villains who look and act evil to the fullest rather than try to hide it as part of their plot. Villains like Lord Shen, Ultron, and Voldemort >>> King Kandy, Ego, and Mr. Waternoose.
I’m pretty sure there’s a reason Ramses was such a good villain is because he was an actual person and it came straight from the Bible which has a tendency to be extremely dark from time to time
I honestly really liked Drago. That said, I saw the HTTYD movies in spanish, where the actor who voiced him was absolutely brilliant (Rafael Azcarraga, aka Kratos and The Lich King).
So glad someone else mentioned it, YES! Rafael was brilliant as Drogo, his voice commanding respect and power. It is a must to rewatch every year in my home, but only in Spanish.
Tbh the (latin american) Spanish has saved a lot of movies in my eyes. I've watched a LOT of reviewers hate Shrek the Third, but MAN the comedy in Latam Spanish remains solid. Yeah, it might be the weakest of the Shrek franchise (something I disagree with tho), but not the worst out of the Dreamworks catalogue, not even close.
@@merafirewing6591I wonder what species they’ll make bad next, they might make rabbits evil. And if they do all three should team up and defeat boss baby fr.
Queen barb brought up a good point about how the main character considers and calls everyone friend even though she hardly knows or takes any time to understand or talk with anyone... and apparently Queen barb is the bad guy for saying this?!
I always considered her an antagonist since she and poppy more less had a similar way of thinking “everyone should be the same” but for different reasons
Chantel DuBois will always be my fav dreamworks villain, she’s so crazy, wild, animalistic in her chases, a better version of the old granny who beat up on Alex throughout the first two movies.
She may be the only Dreamworks villain other than Death who is genuinely terrifying in her single-minded pursuit of the main characters due to being both persistant, capable, and wildly unhinged.
I find it interesting that with Disney's villains, they tend to have a very clear winning with most audiences, but Dreamworks is more spread out in votes because of their variation of character types for their villains. It's definitely fun
The Boss Baby and Trolls franchises are made because they're comparatively cheap and make a lot of money, Dreamworks needs that money to make the good stuff I'm fine with them remaking more of these 'safe' movies, as long as that helps to put more effort for the others
I think he just wishes Dreamwork’s could make money without making something terrible. Pixar does make money with their non toy story sequels. Which aren’t bad (Cars 2 excluded) but are a step downs from the original movie. I imagine Dreamwork’s doesn’t want to ruin their better stuff like HTTYD for money and I respect that
@AIDcyt exactly, without these "dumb" movies, we wouldn't get the masterpieces that we like. I think the video guy was being harsh, I started skipping over some parts because he didn't really go over why they weren't great all he did was call the plot dumb repeatedly.
18:44 I like how these movies played out. Movie 1: Fear against Dragons Movie 2: Dragons as a tool for military power Movie 3: Dragons as a tool for economic power
Reason why Trolls / Boss Baby / Turbo / Home were released at the same decade it's because they were distributed by 20th Century Fox before Universal own them while DreamWorks was at it's lowest point after leaving Paramount when Rise of the Guardians flopped especially losing there PDI division..honestly Trolls and Home Turbo feel like Blue Sky movies..and Boss Baby feel like a Illumination movie
@@Cosmic_Lemonunfortunate time. I was a kid at the same time. There was a lot of stuff even back then so i rather enjoyed other stuff. Im happy you enjoy it.
Besides Disney, when they used to make great villains, DreamWorks as well has made a ton of great villains as well. It’s nice to see people talk about them cuz gosh dang it, they need the recognition
shame you didn't give Nana a spot on the list. she is the best madagascar villain who beats up two lions, can be yanked out of a moving jeep with no effect, and got Makunga through numerous security checkpoints without issue and bring him back to NYC
@@Smallfigures He's not evil and even that's debatable seeing how he loves tormenting Puss and even admits himself he's breaking the rules because he has a grudge and is even pissed when Puss learns his lesson.
Shen is my favourite DreamWorks villain. He’s so compelling and fascinating. The fact that he wiped out half the panda population as he overheard a prophecy he had no right to believe is sickeningly vile. And while he’s not nearly as strong as Tai Lung, I still love how swift and graceful his style of kung fu is and his array of weapons is awesome! And of course, I have to commend Gary Oldman for giving such a cold and intimidating vocal performance! 🦚❤😈
Indeed I mainly shocked he put Jack Horner above Lord Shen, Imo Jack Horner didn't give a big impact to the main characters but rather a fun villain while Lord Shen is very a different level type of villain much like Ramses II
Tzekel Kan was actually portraying how Aztec priests and royalty fought for authority. Makes me wonder if the king would be a villain if the situation was reversed. And Hal from Megamind was suffering from a bad case of vain privilege. Thinking "if I had this or was that , I could have anything" , much like Tai Lung.
I'd argue that Charming's plot actually fits his character quite well. He's completely deluded himself into believing that's he's the storybook hero (no doubt his mother's influence) and at the start of Shrek the 3rd, he's seen putting on an awful play with himself as the star where he finally kills Shrek and gets the princess. In his mind, this is how the story should end, because his vanity and pride accepts nothing less. He's very dramatic (befitting his warped hero complex), so when he captures Shrek and forces the people of Far Far Away to watch the play he wrote, it's less about the play itself and more for his own ego, where he finally proves to the kingdom that he's the real hero by rewritting the story. He doesn't care that Shrek didn't want to be king (Charming had no claim to the throne anyway, so he couldn't take over without a coup), he doesn't care that the people don't like him. In his mind, he MUST be the hero, Shrek MUST be the villain (because he "stole" the kingdom from him, as well as his mother during the events of Shrek 2). The hero must always win. But Charming was too deluded to see where he truly stood in the cast, and that's exactly what happened. I will concede that his story itself wasn't the best. Villains who only show up at the end of the story have to be either powerful or terrifying while being hyped up by the story itself, and Charming was neither. A villain like Charming needs to have a greater impact in the story itself to make up for that.
The thing with Grimmel is that even when he entered Hiccup's house, I didn't feel intimidated by him. That's where he failed with me. In no moment did he actually make me fear for Hiccup and Toothless and that fear and intimidation is a big part for me in terms of villian quality. I actually enjoyed Drago more for this very reason.
Drago had the potential to be intimidating himself, I'll give him that. Too bad all of it went to waste thanks to his defining trait of swinging a stick around and screaming like a toddler throwing a tantrum.
Drago was way less intimidating to me, but honestly I can see how he could be. I wish the characters were somehow fused together to make something that could actually work
@@PentaCrab Yeah that's true even people seem didn't like Kai because how his character is had a clumsy and comedic side than the previous Kung Fu Villains, I still ranked them a bit higher because how badass they were as a DreamWorks villains though they may not be best-written but still enjoyable
What makes it even funnier is that Megamind always intended it to be 'Titan,' but because Hal is an even bigger idiot than the bumbling Megamind, he thought it was spelled 'Tighten.'
I still can't believe that the same company that released Prince of Egypt and the most recent Puss in Boots movie is the same company that released Trolls and Boss Baby *how-*
I thing Eris is so memorable. Like she’s a villain for villainy sake but she is so distinct. From the ways she’s animated to Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance, she is so sultry and manipulative, it is PERFECT!
@@anthonyramirez9925he was actually pretty bland if u think about it. Viggo was way more compelling, he was not only a fighter but a master manipulator. Drago never used anything, himself. Like in the climax he didn’t really do anything. It was just the alpha who did for him. He himself didnt, not even when the alpha was vnaquished he did nothing
in my opinion lord shen is the best animated antagonist, like, ever, cause i love EVERYTHING about him and it is all perfect, his design, his voice, his personality, his smooth and slick movements, and most of all, his VERY personal connection with po. when i saw death he was but a whistle away from topping him, but shens connection with po kept him as my all time fav animated villain. I JUST LOVE HIM
36th place (I literally cannot remember his name for the life of me) kind of reminds me of Hans from Frozen. They’re both twist villains who are shown to be nice until the “Big Reveal”, where there on after they are completely different characters.
It feels like a retcon, because it *was* one in Frozen. Frozen retconned Hans’ character and switched the plot around to fit Elsa & Anna’s relationship better. There’s a documentary that shows the production HELL frozen went through. I can only imagine if it feels the same way, it may be the same. Maybe the guy wasn’t meant to BE a villain, but they decided “noooo we neeeeeeddd a villain! It’s a movieee! Every movie needs a villain!”
Putting Fairy Godmother over Ramses is the hardest undeserved nostalgic pick I've seen in a while. Like, she's great, but Ramses is in a league of his own, come on
As I Christian, I know I'm biased in favor of stories about the Old Testament, but I also grew up on Shrek movies, so I think it's only a slight bias. Anyway, I completely agree with you, Ramses was a way more interesting villain. Also, the music is 10x better in The Prince of Egypt.
so this isn't exactly related to villains but i still find it telling about the rewatchability/how genuinely good some of these movies are. my friend used to work in a daycare. she told me that one of the absolute worst, most mind-numbing parts of her job was not actually cleaning up whatever various liquid or solid messes the kids made, but having movies like boss baby, home, and trolls world tour play on repeat. every day. five days a week.
Interestingly, while Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is my favorite DreamWorks movie, the Colonel is nowhere near my favorite DreamWorks villain (that goes to Lord Shen for me). He's not even a real villain in the traditional sense. Like you said, he does have some honor. Shen, on the other hand, is just pure evil. And he's voiced by Gary Oldman, which is just awesome.
13:08 Okay, I mostly agree... except on one thing "You never knew puss.... but I was always... there" ^ Like bro... comedy gold right there 14:14 Ah yes... the old lady, that eldrtich abomination even the Pengings know cannot be left alive "Is she dead?" *old lady gets up* "No! Drive!" Death at number 3? Bro, that is the most fitting number to have given DEATH
I feel like Poopypants is so relatable because everyone makes fun of his name so he wants to rid of world of laughter. And unlike most of the other DreamWorks villains, he almost won.
I agree on everything except the last one. Lots were better. Death was good for puss because he was the eye opener for puss’s know legacy, he luaghs in the face of death, but when he was faced by it he as a person changed. Grimmel was good for hiccup cuz he met his equal, and something connecting back to the orgins of him as the dragon tamer he is. All of the kung fu ones were a test of physicality, mentality, and spirtuly for Po. This felt like i watched schaffrill. Honestly.
I love how death isn’t even a villain and the only reason he was a menacing antagonist was because of the kind of person Puss was before his character arc was complete
I still have to disagree in this discussion, if a so called force of nature enjoys the fear of his victims and only stops when they are done it's certainly a villian no matter if the goal was to stop him from wasting his lives which in first place it shouldn't even be his problem
Pitch is so much better in the books. If you like Rise of the Guardians, I highly recommend reading The Guardians of Childhood, they are technically children's books but they are still more mature then the movie and expand on the lore/change a lot of things for the better.
I disagree. Pitch is a cop-out in the books, reduced to nothing but a 1 dimensional villain with a "backstory" and a character about as deep as a kiddie pool. He's better the in the movie because you don't get the excuse of "he's evil because of fearlings and if he were Kozmotis again, he'd just be back to good". His whole arc is also a cop-out. I prefer him so much more in the movie, because at least there he is open to changing in more human ways than just by killing and/or un-possessing him.
Tbh with Shrek the Third it seems that the writers thought "what if the king died and they Shrek didn't want to take the throne" and they needed a villain so they brought Charming back since he was still alive
@Julianjulesr1361 pick your AI, lots can produce scripts about movies and whatnot. They may need a little editing but can work just fine. Even if it is sleazy to do so

You have a point when it comes to Fairy Godmother but really 1 &3 should have swapped places mostly because in the case of the Last Wish at least they always quickly or gradually paid it off by the visuals. Not only that but also the fact that for the first time Puss actually bled after saying he had never been touched by a blade and the slowmo used throughout was outstanding.

Gagné should rank higher than the boss baby villains due to the simple fact that, unlike them, he exuded an intimidating presence and wasn't just a generic beta-male villain
I will defend World Tour to my grave. The first Trolls movie sucks. World Tour is so fucking good though and I love the way it handles race and culture. Especially because Barb and Poppy reflect each other really well. Barb wanted to unite everyone under Rock and Poppy wanted to unite everyone but didn't stop to consider the way people are different and want to keep their differences. Instead of going "Poppy is so right! Everyone is the same so we should all get along! Hugs and Kisses!" It goes "To properly unite and accept one another we have to see our differences and not try to erase them." Especially since it uses the Pop Trolls as colonizers, given that pop music is typically the music industry's go-to "make everyone the same whatever" genre.
Dreamworks is actually two studios: One that makes masterpieces (Shrek, KFP, HTTYD, PIB2), and another that makes baffling and confusing projects (Boss Baby, Trolls, Shark Tale, etc.).
I wouldnt put marmalade as high imo. The thing is, I feel like he would have fit as a Disney twist villain, a good guy slowly losing his cool and eventually gets pissed at them. Cus the movie is about bad guys being good so why not have the villain be the opposite instead of being a villain who wants to be more evil.
Yeah she's the one of best DreamWorks villains due to her sadistic nature towards chickens, I love her defeat in the end and how she returned in the sequel
To be honest Lobo the wolf, Chelsea Van Der Zee, Velvet and Veneer are my favorite DreamWorks villains, both should have their own spin offs, they're very amusing. Dave the octopus, Profesor Marmalade and Professor Esquire should return at the Villains Association being enemies to the heroes, it's a great idea to see this.

Ramses is the best villain imo, easy S tier. Pitch Black is A tier, he foils Jack Frost perfectly. Kai is low S tier or high A tier, he is connected to Oogway and Po and the concept of chi in general, being the reason pandas lost that ability, also having a lot of character and tied things together, being both strong like Tai Lung and genius like Shen, being tragic and evil etc.
Ramses deserves to be ranked way higher like High A or S tier ranking. Eris (Sinbad) seems more of a B tier or low A tier villain and Titan should be a low A or Mid B tier IMHO.
3:40 I too love jeff goldblum, i appreciate you pointing out how he was the only highlight for Boss Baby 2. He's a great actor and he usually makes movies 10% better when he's in them.
I like seeing this style of ranking vs the charts. And also kudos for not counting the "villains" that were basically "wild creatures that you honestly just so happened to enter its turf and lord forbid it gets angry and tries to kill you". xD I never saw the giant dragon as the first HTTYD villain, for example, and actually a bit more like the father, but more as an "antagonist" since he was pretty much forcing Hiccup to live his lifestyle and kill dragons against his will. Just like Joy from Inside Out was basically just "toxic positivity" and not really meaning any ill intent, she just didn't understand that it's okay to cry and feel unhappy at times.
When you started talking about Rameses I was just like "preach king" and started doing this 🤌 hand gesture over and over. I think it's enough to assume I agree with you.
