The Gripen is one of the most advanced systems in the world, often without comparison. Its electronic warfare suite is state-of-the-art and ahead of most other platforms. Add to that, if it requires upgrades in the future, the platform is modular with separated architecture so you can switch out the entire suite by simply removing the engine and pulling out the entire electronics module. You can basically have a completely new version of this fighter in just a few hours. I'd say it's a lot more innovative than you think.

And same can be said about the Rafale and the Typhoon. Any 5th gen jet is stealth untill a radar can detect it or a captor can track back the source of a lock. While EU fighters relly on jamming ennemy radars to not be dtected.
@bekeneel
@bekeneel 2 месяца назад
But those are much more expensive than the Gripen, which is both very good & very cheap. Rafale & Typhoon aren't worth the price considering even F35 is already cheaper, has stealth & most advanced electronics & sensors etc. Furthermore many allied countries buy the F35 so it wlil be the most tested, improved & used jet in the world, which is what keeps it price low like that. And Stealth is really effective (against current radars/ad), it's not about being invisible but about not being seen before you see the enemy, and they won't get a lock on it. Relying on jamming is not so secure, for example the Patriot system, even tho it's superior to anything russia has like s400, has an easy way to counter that. If there is a jammer the sam missile will just home in on that jammer instead lol, so either way they're shot down. We've seen that now in Ukraine how effective it is, even downing rus planes over russian airspace, in most cases the crew doesn't even survive. So while Typhoon & Rafale are very capable, they can't match the F35, whlie the price is higher. The "supercruise" is also an asset that's not rly useful imo. @@BzhToine

@@bekeneel Regarding the price of Rafale and Typhoon compared to F35 is not to be taken only on buying price. You have also to look at the whole lifetime of the plane and the flight hour is much more expensive for the F-35 and it's maintenance far more complex and expensive. The avaiability too, EU fighters can perform at least 2 times more missions per day than the F-35 that also have a much more lower payload. And regarding jamming, a missile can go to the source of the jamming but if the jamming prevent the lock it will not go anywhere.

While Gripen lack passive stealth, the active stealth is probobly second to none, as far as we know. But Gripen is missing a other gen 5 feature. Internal weapons bay. There is also one more gen 5 feature that have been unpublished. It is assumed it exist, but not publiced. Super cruise. Then there are the other, and i would argue, possibly most important gen 5 features as networking where i would argue that European planes is even a head of US counter parts. Its also worth saying that UK-Sweden is hard at work on the first gen 6 fighter, the tempest. Of cause, US is also working on it with the Ngad and the F/A-XX.

I think you might be underestimating the capabilities of the three European delta-canard fighters. The Meteor missile all three of them can carry makes them more than capable of dealing with anything Russia can throw at them in a BVR scenario, and they can all carry 7 or more of those. In a 2008 exercise, a Rafale was able to score an F-22 kill in a guns only dogfight, which is still quite impressive. In a 2006 exercise, 3 Swedish Gripen A's went up against 5 Norwegian F-16's and after 3 rounds the results were 5-0, 5-0 and 5-1 for the Gripens. In another exercise a single Gripen was able to shoot down 2 out of 3 F-15's it had a task of intercepting. These 3 have significantly lower drag than their contemporaries and quite impressive agility since they were all pretty much designed to counter Flankers and Fulcrums.
@johanlassen6448
@johanlassen6448 Месяц назад
1. Rafale never managed to score a kill. In the video that you are presumably referring to, it got a missile lock, not a gun lock. It is also utterly irrelevant of course, because that is not how a fight vs a 5th gen would go. 2. The 2006 exercise never happened, it is a fabrication perpetuated by a random poster ("Stefan Englund") on Quora. OFC you just swallowed it hook, line and sinker because you can't exercise source criticism.

Rafale has performed more missions than the Eurofighter, and has proven itself more than capable of doing what it was DESIGNED to do... It also has more operators than the Eurofighter, and while the Eurofighter might seem more capable on paper while being similar to the Rafale in price, foreign air forces tend to always favor Rafale more than the Eurofighter... This is because of the Rafale's capability to perform any mission, any day, very excellently... There's a reason why they call Rafale "the first and only omnirole fighter jet"... Meanwhile, the Typhoon is made primarily for air superiority, but later on integrated with limited ground attack capabilities... Also, the Gripen should have a higher grade for innovation... Its pretty innovative for its prize... The new Gripen E/F variant (now in operation with Sweden as of this video's publication) is equipped with an IRST and AESA radar, and has an advanced electronic suite... Its radar is actually better than the Rafale's, with 1000 t/r modules as compared to Rafale's 800... Also, the Rafale radar is GaA based while Gripen's is GaN, which is more advanced... The Gripen's radar also has a repositioner, something that Rafale lacks, and it has a 2-way data link capability, again, something that Rafale lacks... Unfortunately, the Gripen E/F is no longer the "budget fighter" that the Gripen once was, with a price tag of around $85million, its now more expensive than both the F16V, and the 2-engined F18E... But even the budget-friendly Gripen C/D ($40-45million) is pretty innovativr... It too has an advanced radar... Yes, its not an active phased array radar yet, its radar is still pulse doppler, but unlike other pulse doppler radars with mechanically-scanned antennas, the Gripen C/D's pulse-doppler radar has an AESA antenna, making it more efficient and effective... So again, its pretty innovative for its price... In addition, the Gripen (all variants) is also made of composite materials, and has a reduced radar visibility design (just like the Typhoon), making it both more stealthy and also very lightweight (in fact one of the lightest fighters in the world)... It can also supercruise at Mach 1.2 while being only single-engined... Its also very cheap and very easy to maintain, and in fact only requiring 1 skilled engineer and 2 other unskilled workers to change its engine, and onlt required a short strip of straight highway to operate, making it able to operate even without runways... What other fighter can do that, aside from the Gripen (and the now-outdated MiG-29)?

Speaking about Gripen, Analyst have said that the gripen would be the perfect plane for the Ukraine war. GRipen simply has a different use case. I.e using highways as airstrips, extremely short take off and landing distance. Yes it doesn't have huge range, but it was never designed for it. it was basically design for take off deliver munitions and come back and land on a different field making almost impossible to gain air superiority by bombing airfields. Further more it has a very good situational awareness system which allows for only one plane to pop up and immediately all aircrafts would see the same things allowing them to deliver munitions. So Gripen is a pure bread defense aircraft.
@peterrasmussen9336
@peterrasmussen9336 3 месяца назад
It is also much easier to maintain. It requires less skilled and fewer personnel to maintain and rearm. Also, it has a very powerful EW system, which the Russian war in Ukraine shows is very useful! So it should be graded higher on versatility, cost and efficiency. Stealth wasn't a priority because new radar systems would eventually be made to 'see' stealth airplanes. Checking out US E-7 Wedgetail and E-2D Hawkeye are good indications of that becoming true.

 @RogerPierre57 "and are still up there with anything around today" F16V yes probably but Mirage 2000's latest upgrade '-9' (late 90') is definitely not on par with the latest avionics or weaponry that you can find into the Gripen for instance. "Rafale, which is the most sophisticated advanced fighter jet in the world" Indeed Dassault philosophy is to propose high end integrated tech with a certain level of rusticity, a compromise with the idea that it has to be able to make war not showcasing around. I wouldn't say it is the most sophisticated, but for sure it is highly sophisticated, and again, Dassault's jets are designed to fight, not to shine on podiums. "it is the "ONLY" omnirole jet in the world and second to none" Well it used to be the only omnirole, and had introduced the concept, but not today, Gripen can claim it as well. So yes Rafale is one awesome piece of tech, and probably the most prolific non-US fighter of today, but you need to temper your enthusiasm 😁

@@RogerPierre57 Well, Mirage 2000's avionics is not really updated since the late 90's (execpt the 2000-D), still use the old RDY (-5) and RDY2 (-9), and early Rafale F1's mission computer, you can't decently compare with 2020's avionics, the gap is huge. 2000-5 & -9 are still potent and lethal if well operated, but the Gripen E is certainly ahead, 2000-9 and D are probably more efficient as bombers but in bvr the Gripen is untouchable, like said by French pilots during evaluations, the Rafale (F3R) killed the -5 (radar on or osf) way before the 2000 is able to detect. your argument of authority is not receivable here.

The main operators of the Rafale are not just France and Greece. As compared with the 24 units of Greece (H.A.F.) ( 12 upgraded and used and 12 brand new ), United Arab Emirates have signed an order of 80 aircraft of the upcomming version Rafale-F4, Egypt owns 24 Rafale F3R and has placed an order of 24 additional units and India operates 36 Rafale F3R and recently has chosen the Rafale M to equip its aircraft carriers ( I do not remember the number of units ). Quatar has acquired 24 of them along with 24 Eurofighter-Typhoon and 36 F-15EQ, Croatia is also an operator of the Rafale F3R ( 12 second hand and upgraded units just like the 12 Greek ones ) Indonesia has also placed an order to Dassault ( I do not remember the number of units ). The Rafale was not supposed to conduct air-to-ground operations, whilst the twin-seated Mirage-2000D fulfills this purpose. The Rafale is a nimble high thrust-to-weight ratio aircraft with low wing-load and canards and therefore it boasts about a superb manoeuvreability ( it managed to shoot down an F-22 during an excersise - guns only - that took place in U.A.E. in the year 2008 ) and by the way the French endowed it with additional air-to-ground capabilities as well as superb BVR engagement capabilities that come along with the METEOR missile.

Very inaccurate facts. The Mirage-2000 does not belong to the 4+ generation fighters. The production of the aircraft stopped in the year 2009. Recently the air-defence variant Mirage-2000C has been retired from the inventory of Armee de l' Air ( about 130 units ) and only about 80 twin-seated Mirage-2000D are left operational for mainly ground-attack purposes. Of course the production of the aircraft in cause has never reached the number of 600 units as mentioned in the video ( unless you confuse the Mirage-2000 with the earlier model Mirage F1 ).

@@AviationAustin It has been introduced in Summer 1984 ( as an early production variant ) as a 3rd generation aircraft. The serial production engine M-53P-2 was available in 1986 and the serial production radar ( RDI ) was available in the year 1987 . This final version was designated as Mirage-2000C and initially was armed with the Super Matra 530F missiles for BVR engagement until the introduction of the Super Matra 530D with longer range and snap-down capability ( operational in 1990 ). In the year 1996 the version Mirage-2000-5F has been introduced equipped with the RDV radar ( mechanically scanned ), that featured a faster search mode with a faster processor and longer detection range. The cockpit was equipped with 2 MFD's, with Up Front Controll and it featured HOTAS flightstick and throttle. The new engine ( M-53P-25 ) featured only a 4% additional thrust. The introduction of the MICA-EM ( active radar missile ) and MICA-IR ( long range red-infra with initial radar guidance ) missiles was the aircraft's strongest point. This version could barely be desingated as a 4th generation aircraft. France was engrossed with the developpment of the Rafale. Armee de l' Air had upgraded 37 of the existing Mirage-2000C up to the Mirage-2000-5F standard and about 33 of them are operational today with the purpose to initiate the new pilots into the air-combat before they jump into the Rafale.

I saw someone saying that Eurofighter has been collaborated by 3 countries and if others need to buy spare parts or upgrades than it will be a headache and many times Germany has destroyed it own customers based on bad after sales service. But with Rafael that problem wasn't thr. French don't want their tech to go to US, China, Russia so they are nice to others. I guess it has euro centric policies. I also think that since Eurofighter is the best in the class so Europeans want it to keep it to themselves rather than give to others especially 2nd world. So diplomacy, after sales service and price is a major factor as well. FYI I am no expert on Aircrafts or tech. Ok, so it is all about the operating environment. For the Europeans, it is about interception because our most likely enemy is Russia. This means that the aircraft needs to be able to climb very quickly to attain defensive postures. US stealth aircraft just aren't powerful enough in the thrust-to-weight ratio. Offensively, stealth is important; that is why the UK has F35s. The Euro fighter is generation 4.5 which means its materials and EW aspects are stealthy but it does not sacrifice all of its performance to stealth in the way F35 does.

I've come to really appreciate the differences in concept and design from nation to nation - I find it hard to commit to a favourite because each are equally stunning but for beautifully different reasons. I'm just glad that we all respect our own processes and allow each other to pursue, deploy and cultivate our own air fleets and nurture our own industries and economic development... ...I mean, at least no one goes around with briefcase and ball-bat ,,politely" suggesting their product and potentially causing truly unique designs/concepts/theories to be lost forever. (Ahem)now, where'd I put the keys to the TSR-2 ? 🤔

Though I understand the rankings but to be fair on the gripen. When it comes to both hard points and range it’s made to be a homeland defender/ interceptor up fast attack, tune home to reload and refuel and it’s from what I know the fastest plain to reload, refuel and service and only need a truck at the road side to do it. It is build to be a dispersed action jet. Still in exercises it has stood up against most other fighters.

Making it hyper-optimized for a single mission type is a great reason that it doesn't score higher on versatility. The versatility score is specifically included because aircraft with single mission focuses don't have the success or longevity that more versatile platforms do. A non-military example would be the A380. Super innovative, but it fills a very specific need. Hub to hub, long haul transit. As soon as the market thought that need wasn't relevant anymore sales evaporated and the program has been discontinued.

I find it interesting that you would rank the Mirage 2000 low on innovation. Given that it is an old airplane (3rd generation), the question is not "how innovative is it now?", but "how innovative was it then?". On the other hand, you do not take into account the Rafale's technological innovations (phased-array radar, etc.) because they have been added more recently. What gives? Why don't you compare these planes as they are being sold currently (the Mirage 2000 is not sold anymore)?

Gripen has been robbed. Gripen is reliable and in exercises can cut it in a knife-fight with the best of military aviation. Its electronics suite is also highly innovative and is said to be only shaded by the F35's and EA18G in terms of counter measures, detection and jamming. On the other hand, the Typhoons are known to be a hanger princess, availability rates are abysmal from what I hear, so I recognise there's some good arguments regarding supercruise and range but if it were purchase time and Typhoon or Gripen were on the menu only, I'd be asking for the Gripen - particularly if we can get them 2-to-1 and still run them for a fraction of the cost of the Rafale and Typhoon. The running costs are lower than anything else, so I feel this should place it higher, throw in the versatility of being able to operate close to the front lines, offsets the need for significant range, it is a workhorse. Of course the size of the territory, and likely operating roles, and types of runways available might factor significantly in that decision too...

giving an 8 to versatilty to typhoon and a 7 to the rafale when u know both was designed as a multirole fighters but typhoon couldn't due to the additionnal side wings just below the cockpit making ground mission not opperable, and the fact there is no naval version for the typhoon, is not accurate at all. also the 3 for the rafale at cost is a bit rough when u compare the price to its concurents. i would have put it before the eurofighter because it's a better multirole, and the eurofighter is just slightly better on air-air, but rafale is combat proven and really efficient in it. btw i would also put gripen at 3, won't elaborate seems logic.

Meanwhile Russia still use T55 tanks and old Mig29 in real combat situations. The Eurofighter Typhoon is perfectly capable of handling everything Russia has. For the few Su 57, Europe has a fairly sufficent quantity of F35. No need to piss of the americans... However, Japan, Italy, Germany and the UK are actually developing a common 5th gen fighter jet platform. No need to shout it in the media. To shoot down Mig 29s, by the way, the old dear Tornado armed with modern air to air missiles is plenty enough. Or the large fleet of F16 Europe has, still a splendid piece of art.
@Itachi951000
@Itachi951000 28 дней назад
I don't really understand the purpose of comparing aircraft "as they were introduced" and not with their actual matured capabilities. The Rafale, contrary to the Typhoon, was designed to be modular from the very beginning with evolutive standards in mind as France was going at it all alone, with the cost constraints that come with it as a result of defense spending cuts post-Cold War. The platform was thus rather incomplete at first (the prematurely introduced F1 standard to urgently replace the French Navy's obsolete carrier fleet and then F2 standard for the Air Force) but had more leeway for modernization (additions, replacement of systems with new, more capable ones, etc) for a jump in capabilities, which is what happened. The Rafale F3-R, Gripen E and Eurofighter Tranche 4 are the variants that should be compared. There are newer more capable variants (the newly-introduced Rafale F4, the planned F5, the Typhoon with the Captor-E ECRS Mk2 and the planned Tranche 5) but the previous ones mentioned can be considered mature airframes already.

coming from the Russian fighter ranking the difference between this video and that one is huge in the ranking details, i come away with the knee jerk reaction that you were more critical of Russian aircraft but I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the time difference on the releasing of the videos. I understand that I am but one person but I was wondering if you would consider making a video compiling all the rankings and differences based on aircraft type like just a quick over view of comparing nations planes to their counter part from another nation.
