Qui Gonn certainly does not get enough credit, if you think his role was too small - think further. The whole story is his legacy, as he put trust in Anakin in the first place, and his legacy and teachings lived in Obi-Wan, which were passed to Anakin and Luke. Unfortunately, Disney focused on characters, overpowering them and totally forgetting the legacy of the jedi. Creating a connection in force between Ray and former generations, where she would connect with heroes of the past through force would have been a great way to impact her character development, as the jedi would act like her guides in the insane situation she got into.

R2 is so popular because he’s an unsung hero in the entire franchise, he’s been around for everything and has saved Luke, Leia, Anakin, and everyone else he has served for multiple times. And Qui-Gon is THE most important character in all of Star Wars, without him Anakin would never have become a Jedi and no Anakin means no Vader which no Vader means no Star Wars, that’s why Qui-Gon is more important to Star Wars than anything other character and yes even more important than Anakin
