MK9 to me is really peak MK. Tag Kombat, 4 player local play, probably the greatest roster we ever got in an MK game and the graphics and presentation makes it feel like the closest thing we will ever get to a HD remake of Mk 2/3.
Shao Khan actually wasn't a boss character in MK Armageddon, the only true boss characters were Onaga, Blaze and Moloch. Shao Khan, Goro, Kintaro and Motaro can all be launched, juggled and combo'd on unlike the other three. I remember arguing with one dude who accused me of picking a boss when he lost to my Shao Khan when playing online on PS2.
I didn't enjoy the 3D MK games on the ps2 the only game I liked was Shaolin Monks and it's my favourite beat em up game based on the MK universe you can get to explore those creepy stages from MK2😅
@@Euro.Patriot Nah, I won with him thats why the dude was mad. I pretty much picked anyone if I remembered all their specials and strings. Didn't use Shao alot though, my mains were Reiko, Ermac, Sektor, and Rain.
Awesome work man. Of course my list is a little different and still evolving with MK1, but you did an amazing job compiling this. True passion project. Ty
Armageddon was great! I remember trying my hardest to get stage fatalities on my friends, my favorite one was where you're on top of the building, and you have to knock the opponent down 2 levels before knocking them all the way off. Havik's "Whoo-ah-ooo... OH SHIT!" Never failed to make me laugh my ass off.
MK3 Ultimate was my first game. I immediately loved Cyrax and Sindel as a kid. I really liked 9 & X but MK3 will always have a special place in my heart.
MK2 was an AMAZING game. I played it EVERY morning at the donut shop before going to elementary school while in 3rd grade. The guy that owned the donut shop would put it on free play and fight me...beating me every single time, I had no problem beating other kids even up to 12-13 (I was 9), but man was he a sadist. I did manage to memorize every single move almost and every single fatality/stage fatality for every character. I was awesome with Kitana, Reptile and Sub-Zero. I was amazing at cheesing with Reptile and using his force balls in conjunction with his acid spit and slide. Kitana was awesome with her fan lift using the throwing fans in the air and her flying punch. It seemed like everyone had 3 moves that just were spammable to the point of making "combo's" in that game. Man good memories playing that game as a young kid, and now I'm 40 almost, crazy how fast time flies. However, I definitely am SO glad I grew up when I did there was just so much awesome stuff out there and so much stuff that has gone away because kids got stupider so they had to make laws to "protect them". Sucks to have been born in the mid-90's and later. At least if you were born up until then you still saw the world as being awesome to a point, even if missing out on the end of the best times.
Pretty sure that chronologically, it's Mythologies Sub-Zero the first one. You said that the events of that one is before MK4 but you are wrong, it's before MK1 (the original), he kills Hanzo in that one and then he becomes Scorpion, that's how and why Scorpion appears in the first game wanting revenge on Sub-Zero, also in one fo the cutscenes the Grand Master says to Bi-Han that he is the chosen to participate in Mortal Kombat 1. Hell, if it wasn't before MK1 it would be Kuai Liang and not Bi-Han, because Bi-Han was dead by then...
Bruh yall only say MK9 is the best NRS because of "ROSTER" MK9 is heavily carried by NOSTALGIA. MKX is the better game if we talking GAMEPLAY.. too each ya zone though
@@DIRTYSOUTHSHINOBI yea in terms of gameplay MKX is the best but i dont just judge on gameplay, i think about the roster, the story, and other content besides the gameplay so i still believe 9 is the better of the 2.
Well done and thank you for the review. Excellent one! I remember entering an arcade in Toronto and seeing MK being played for the first time. Been playing ever since. I'm in the UK now!
Really good video and really good list! I watched through the whole thing. This was very well done and I praise you for the effort put in. It was an enjoyable watch!
The original was grimy, bloody and had a dark atmosphere never seen before that time. The sights and sounds were so unique and dark. It was unbelievable at the time
Facts. I loved mk4 different but not totally off the wall and the combos were basically all the same so it was actually fun and easy to use any character. But Tanya was a beast.
Compared MK9 vs MK1 (new) MK9 wins all day long, it was great it was one of those games you just needed to have in your collection! And was such a good homage towards full trilogy.
Myself included too on the ending lol I owned 1-4 and Armageddon, didn't much care for 4 or Armageddon but played the crap out of original trilogy, but love when 9 came out, mainly for one of the reasons you said, getting to see a true story mode for original trilogy was awesome in itself lol but agree with most everything else you said about it too. I can't comment much on list as a whole though, I only played the ones I just said, plus MK vs DC, MK X and MK1 Sadly I have MK 11 I bought on a Black Friday deal but nevee even touched lmao I just dove into MK 1 story having not played since X "it's resetting timeline again as far as I know, should be fine not knowing about 11" lol XD Do plan on finally playing 11 tho, I'll miss out on all the DLC stuff now at this point obviously but I just wanna go back and replay all the stories now starting with 9 lol
I'm a MK fan since 1994 and while the OG MK will always be my favorite game in the series, I completely agree that MK9 is the best one. It has everything. The story mode, the gameplay, the characters, all fire.
the story mode you gotta not think about to enjoy but its still bit fun. The gameplay is fire even if lots of characters have strong tools and the character count/amount was mad dope
MK 2 was the very first video game I ever played. So there's a special/nostalgic love there for me personally with 2 and 3. MK 9 was a great reboot of new gen mechanics, super smooth for when it came out. I personally like how much smoother MK 1 is to the others 9, X and 11. I did like Smoke in 9 much better than in the new one though. He's cool. But MK 9 Smoke is the superior one I think.
Nassive cudos man, especially when an hour into the video you realise that the video is probably getting demonetized and you dont even care. That's a true passion project. Myself included in that sentiment! - ❤ Bitplex
The later mk games have a damage cap/scaling. it will not break your combo but you will do less damage/or no damage after a certain point. Right now in mk1 shang tsung has a minute long combo that barely does damage after a certain point but will run out the time.
MK4 was a fun game and definitely not at the bottom 3. The weapon system made it a new concept for MK and it worked if you actually knew how to play. Maximum damage combos were the goal and exhibited combo skill once you learned how many different combo varieties you could pull off. It was well balanced. Fun factor was a fresh take from the repetitive formula of the first 3 games. A lot of us loved it.
Also in mk9 you could cause more damage to a characters apperance than scraps and dirt and some blood. It was very satisfying just noticing how you can mess up a characters appearance and how bloody they get, especially with barraka, and most of the fatalities are reamagines of the classics, and they are all interesting in their own ways, and the costumes are definitely memorable... besides all of the girls being hypersexualized, probably shang tsung is one of the most un-inspired characters but still memorable, i dont understand the hate on stryker but hes also kinda un-inspired
a lot of the MK Fans treat some kharacters unjust. Many of the original MK kharacters were "uninspired" like Liu Kang, Cage, Kano, Raiden & Shang... the all were knock-offs of Bruce Lee, JCVD, Terminator and Big trouble in... But it didn't matter because the game rocked and their backstories got more fleshed out the more it went on. Maybe Stryker would habe had become a fan favorite later on, if the fans gave him a chance? I enjoyed playing with Stryker. Yes, the outfit was lackluster, but in MK:A and MK9 he had pretty cool skins. And don't forget that MK3 played a part during an invasion. How and why would a cop dress for a fight during an invasion? By that logic all the other kharacter's outfits don't make sense at all 😂 but still no one cared.
As someone who has played all the Mortal Kombat games, MK 9 will forever be my favourite, but I must say, I was pleasantly surprised this year with MK1. I've found myself coming back to it almost as much as my MK9 days. It feels refreshing in a way
I have played from the first mortal kombat and have been a huge fan but my fandom peaked at deception which I thought was perfect AND brought back some old characters that got no love until then like Baraka, Kabal and Noob. A close second was MK11 which had the best gameplay and roster to me. 9 was also amazing given all it did to bring the series back, the large roster and xrays
I went from playing Mortal Kombat 2 as a 7 year old to picking up mortal kombat 11 on a whim for the switch and I was completely caught off guard lol not playing it for 28 years and seeing how far it has come was quite an experience.
I kinda like how MK9 rebooted right around 18/19 years. Makes me wonder if they will do the same again for the next generation of kids growing up. I love this franchise! I grew up playing it here and there with 1 2 and 3 and finally got my own copy with Mk4. Didnt get a new console till Deception so I had to skip DA. Had to skip a few more till 11 but I still follow the games and story regardless by watching others. One thing i miss about the older games was seeing the teasers and stuff in game magazines ❤ blessed to be born the same year this franchise was and experience it all.
I've enjoyed your vid. Very well appreciated. But one thing you have to consider is the time period when certain game's came out. Sure MK 4/Gold looks like ass now but imo, the time period when it was released, it was pretty ok. I think Deadly Alliance looks and played worse than 4/Gold. I've owned every MK game except for the gba and MK12. I refuse to call it MK1. 🤣 Went back and saw all my typos and made corrections. Update 23-10-10, bought MK12, aka, Mortal 1 Kombat, aka, Mortal Kombat 1. Now I just need to find the GBA MK's to complete the collection.
This is the first time i am watching a ranking of the different mortal kombat games and finding myself agreeing constantly. I disagree on a few things like deception not being in the top 5, but overall i think you did a great job.
I couldn't agree with you more. Mk9 is the best of both worlds , modernish game play , best story , best characters, 2 player Tag team not online. I wish they made mk1 or 12 like this but they could add Camo characters if your not playing 2 players and all camo players can be playable as your main character. And I also do like mk11 customization but I also like how m9 has all the characters moves from the start.
Definitely not the best, Killer instinct gold and MK trilogy both destroy MK4 for n64. But mk4 is still better than most people will give it credit for, I certainly rather play it than MK vs dc
I have been a fan since the first game was released and I was way too you really even play it, lol. I’ve owned a majority of the games in the series including the most recent. I have to say that my favorite overall is MK2. I was hooked on that game for years. That was before you had all of the codes for fatalities right there. You either had to buy the game manual or have a game genie. Either that or perform on accidentally, lol.
Sub-Zero mythologies takes place before the first game. It might happen at the same time as the special ops game or slightly before or after that game (idk, I didn’t play the special ops game). In mythologies Bi-Han kills Scorpion then Sektor’s dad makes a deal with Quan Chi to wipe out the Shirai Ryu clan. And yeah, there’s the amulet and all that jazz that’s relevant to MK4’s story. Buuuuut in MK1 Scorpion is trying to kill Bi-Han because he’s mad that Bi-Han killed him and, allegedly, his entire clan (it was Quan chi, not Bi-Han). So, given Scorpion is dead in the first game and in this game Bi-Han kills him it takes place before the first game. Technically, yeah it’s before MK4 as well.
You entertained me Sr, and I want to thank you for that. I have soooooo many great memories playing UMK3 as a kid with my friends. And yes, MK9 is THE best. Agree with you
I agree mortal kombat 9 really reminded me of the love I had & still have for the series I remember getting high & drunk with my friends & playing each other talking mad shit & just havin a good time 😂 can’t believe it’s been more than a decade I hope they do a re-release so I can play it on pc ❤
Very solid list but the more of these I watch and the more I'm convinced that MK Deception is the best and the 3d era in general is underrated. Of course when comparing the core gameplay they may not be as good as MK2-3 or the netherrealm ones, but a game is not just that, it is also the story, the selection of characters offered, the unlockables, the extra modes... If you want to do a ranking of just the core gameplay that's fair (but then it makes no sense to include the single player adventure games for example), but when comparing the whole experience of the game all those elements should be taken into account. And I know you mentioned the extra modes and whatnot, giving Deception quite an edge over the others, and you did take the storyline into account, so again a solid list... but I always feel people overrate MK2 and MK3 too much because at the end of the day they're little more than barebones fighting simulators; sure, some of the best gameplay ever in their genre, but still they're not the fully immersive universe we've seen in later games, especially the PS2 trilogy. If you're curious of my ranking, I made one trying to weight gameplay, roster, story, art, and extras evenly, and this is the result: *1 - Deception/Unchained* *2 - Mortal Kombat X* *3 - Mortal Kombat (2011)* *4 - Mortal Kombat 1 (2023)* *5 - Armageddon* *6 - Mortal Kombat 11* *7 - Deadly Alliance* *8 - MK Trilogy* *9 - UMK3* *10 - Shaolin Monks* *11 - MKvsDCU* *12 - MK3* *13 - MKII* *14 - MK Gold* *15 - MK4* *16 - Mythologies: Sub-Zero* *17 - Mortal Kombat (1992)* *18 - Special Forces*
I didn’t grow up playing MK, my brothers and I were more into Street Fighter & Tekken, but I got into the games with MKX in college and fell absolutely in love with MK11 a few years later. It’s not perfect, but the gameplay felt smoother to me than X, and the presentation was the best in any fighting game I’ve ever played; even now years later. I think I’ve played MK11 more than literally any other game I’ve ever had; I played it for literally hours everyday for well over a year and only really stopped after emptying out the krypt. It’s maybe my favorite game of all time and holds a special spot in my heart for all the good memories I had playing it alone & with friends. Personally, while I haven’t played all the MK games, I have a hard time not seeing this at least somewhere in the top 5 MK games of all time, but I’m far from an expert on the series gameplay wise 🤷🏾♂️
2 still is, was and will always be the goat. 12 unique playable characters probably not from a visual standpoint because 3 of them are mainly pallete swaps but from a gameplay standpoint you are getting something different from each character and they are all very playable. Stage backgrounds and music is fantastic, fatalities were unique, gameplay was less focus on combos and more focus on a footsie style game. Game speed was perfect fast but not game breaking fast, difficulty was brutal, probably some of the worst A.I input reading aside from maybe Art of fighting 2, KOF 94 and Kaiser knuckle. Yes later mk games would add more characters and look better and have crazy combos but 2 is the standard for all MK games to me
For me Mortal Kombat (MK9) its the one that introduced me to the franshise when i was 15 years old (27 now) and literally as a guy that doesn't like fighting games much, mortal kombat is probably the ONLY franshise that i like since the last fighting games i use to play were Tekken 2 and 3 (and that was years ago). Now, because of the love i had for MK9 (2011) i literally started getting those games, and i started to get the hang of Injustice 2 as well. Now, i'm waiting for the Holidays so i can Pick up my copy of Mortal Kombat 1 since i'll have more free time from college.
Pronouncing “Raiden” as “Rye-den” takes away credibility to shit on MK4. Everyone hops on the Hate on MK4 with the same rhetoric bandwagon. But NO1 talks about the hilarious slapping ppl against the screen with their weapon lmao 😂 had the best music too 💯
Mk1 is pretty awesome but it’s a grind if you want a quicker version MKM is very decent for a mobile game. Still MK11 is my fav console game I think it tool it too new heights.Solid ranking i agree with most of your opinions.😊
The mk vs dc falling mechanic was actually very fun for me but only for this title, then they moved the idea of switching maps to injustice which was nice
Agreed with mk9 at #1 a 100% I'm one of those guys who legit kinda enjoyed MK special forces, I completed it! However it was bought for me by accident as I'd ask for MK4 years after it came out and my mum bless her went to blockbuster and got me special forces, couldn't be ungrateful so I dug in and enjoyed it for what it was.
Love your take! But I gotta admit I have a soft spot for MK11 (it's my #3) I just wished there was a fatality skip button ffs. Doing towers for the characters and pulling off fatalities to build the total number of kills for the trophies turned me away from playing it more.
Mkx will always be peak mk, it took the gameplay of mk9 and tuned it up to a crazy level. The story was definitely weakest, but the gameplay was perfect, every character was fun to play, and you could spend countless hours in practice mode and always find new stuff for characters.
Dude. MK4 was awesome. The game was way more fair and balanced then the MK games before it. The graphics look good for the time. Yes the models aren't great but they are no where near ugly they are just simple. You say that the animations and movements are stiff while showing pretty smooth animations. The game has fun movesets and finishers. The controls aren't really awkward just get some time to get used to. Also the animation of breaking someones arm or other body part is so fun to do. I don't think that the game is better then MK3 but its definitely better then MK vs DC and I would even say that its better then the first MK
MK2 is the best followed by UMK3. I grew up playing MK when it was first released in the arcades. It lost its way after 4 but MK9 did usher in a new era which I'm thankful for.
I’ve been on an MK kick recently; I used to play MK 2 and 3 with my Dad via the Midway Arcade Treasures Collection on ps2. Baraka was easily my favorite, so seeing him rise to a more prominent role in MK1 has made me very happy. Also, Hamtaro is goated
MK9 and MKX are my favourite, not played the new one yet though, the trilogy on ps1 would get more love from me if it wasn't so glitchy, i like MK3 aswel.
I enjoyed Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 2. That's a good choice for number 1 but MK 2 is my favorite number 1 game. It had the best fatality music with Shao Khan says Fatality it has that moan sound which had that darkness after the fatality is done. I feel like MK X-MK 1 remake all has the same speed during the fight in my opinion
I absolutely love Mortal Kombat: Deception. Chess Kombat, Konquest Mode, Puzzle Kombat the Death Traps… it was all so much fun. Hell, it’s a hot take, but I love the additions of Havik, Onaga, and Shujinko, and somewhat like Hotaru. Lots of love foe it even decades later. Armageddon is flawed… but I love the roster, Konquest, and the Kreate-A-Fighter was fun, I maxed out profile space so i could just keep adding more fighters, some classics (As as MK1 Reptile), some palette swaps (such as Sleet, a white palette swap ninja with Sub Zero and Rain’s moves), and even was able to add in DBZ fighters such as Goku and Vegeta. I also have a soft spot for Deadly Alliance because it was the first game in the series I heavily played, but I realize how much better Deception was. UMK3 was fun, though difficult, but I would argue its roster made it way better than MK3. Trilogy had the full roster, but was more flawed. MK2 is a classic despite how tough the AI can be. The rest I never played, though I really would love to try the first game, just to get that rush of old school original Mortal Kombat.
38:50 odd how you pronounce Raiden with the long "I" sound (like the real life God) and then pronounce it "Ray-den" (the pronunciation for the character) in the next sentence...
Lol. I played the hell out of Sub Zero and loved it, especially the cheesy cutscenes. That said, I’ll just let it retain my love for it in nostalgia land. I’ve made the mistake of playing past games before … I’m looking at you Tenchu.
