Nintendo made a HUGE mistake not buying Rare.

I think with the lack of understanding on the control side of things with Goldeneye - you had to be there at the time of release to understand how much worse the controls of everything else were at the time. It truly was revolutionary at the time. Being able to watch the film and pair it up with the game made both very special. It’s the greatest film adaptation of all time. For me, and yes based on nostalgia, it would rank #3 on this list and in the top 5 of N64 games overall. I totally agree on your top two in that order though, both for Rare N64 games and for all N64 games with Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 making up the other slots.

Hell yeah Banjo-Tooie #1! Banjo-Tooie is the perfect combination of 3D platformer and Metroidvania. A lot of people say it's broken cos you can cheese so many jiggies but that's just what to expect from a metroidvania. Personally I play it through properly though and it's incredible.

I think you've underrated GoldenEye quite a bit here. It was one of the first games I ever played on the N64 when I got it in 1998, and the Xbox version really cemented its status as one of my all time favorite games. The modern controls make the game a blast, and I keep going back to try to improve my best times. But I totally agree about B-K and B-T. I've 100%ed both of them multiple times on the N64 and the Xbox. Just great games.

Waiting for Banjo Tooie to come out as a kid was torture.

Perfect Dark > Goldeneye 007 in my opinion. Perfect Dark you could play multi-player by yourself with bots. Thats was awesome back in the day if you didn't have any friends over.

Big call with Goldeneye at 7 (it's probably my #1) but respect for outlining your reasons why it didn't click for you, rather than just saying it's "aged horribly" like a lot if modern reviews.

Jet Force Gemini was the real deal, I played this game so much, it was incredible for the time with all the gameplays and actually interesting weapons. The multiplay was chef’s kiss too

Goldeneye 007 single-player has aged very well. The AI of the enemies was very advanced especially in 1997. Enemies can hear your loud guns; if you shoot a loud gun in levels where you are supposed to use stealth, many enemies will potentially hear it and come swarm you. Enemies will also use unpredictable patterns to get to you; you may expect them to take the shortest route, but they will instead take a longer route so they come up behind you and attack where you don't expect them to be. The game engine in Goldeneye's single player was and still is extremely fun and unique.

I agree all of them are good and worth looking at, my personal top 3 are Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie and Conkers Bad Fur Day, wonderful and unique games, total classics! The battle levels, bosses (which is one of the most original things in the game) and silver coin challenges were all great imo.

What's cool is there is a hack for donkey Kong country 64 called donkey Kong country 64 tag out anywhere it's let's u change characters at anytime. That should make the game easier and faster to beat.

Ranking or not a lot of these games must return on the Nintendo Switch Online service (I'm drooling about Banjo-Tooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 and Conker of the most)

Gameplay is great too but just let down by the daft amount of individual collectibles for each Kong, the mini games and that damn metal fish mission. Conkers bfd is so low because even though I love the humour and the characters, the gameplay is terrible. The game doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Great list, always great to see love shown to Blast Corps, Perfect Dark and Diddy Kong Racing. I'm surprised that the collecting coins while racing didn't click with you in Diddy Kong Racing. I love it when a racing game does that. It tests to see if you really know all of the parts of the track and if you can still win the race while also taking these sub-optimal routes to pick up the coins. I've always liked the trade-offs there: "Ok, I may fall behind everyone on this first lap but I'll be able to get 7 out of 8 coins and then really put the hammer down in the final two laps to get back into 1st."

Great list my guy! That jab at the Completionist was the c-c-c-Combo Breaker of the video! 😂 I loved DK64 but yeah I couldn’t beat it because the collectathon mentality of it all. Loved your take on PD I loved that game to death. And the multiplayer was WILD 🥰

I am sorry, but putting Goldeneye anywhere but top 2 at least should be criminal!

Personally I like the notes system in the og Kazooie more, sure it's a bit annoying in like Rusty Bucket Bay or if you fall off a tree in Click Clock Woods, but they did a great job of subtly helping you navigate the level. Admittedly it wasn't super needed given you can basically 100% everything on your first trip and Kazooie's levels are more manageable, but honestly feel like Tooie would have at least gotten fewer complaints if they'd stuck with 100 individual notes and the best note system (because otherwise you'll see an area, collect the notes because shiny, then by the time you come back in 3 days later you can't remember if you actually explored the area or just got the notes and bounced). Also cement as in what's in the buildings.

Grunty Industries is my favorite part of the game lol. It's also full of cement!

The SNES and N64 were my entire childhood. My personal favorites were Star Fox 64, Pokémon Snap, and Diddy’s Kong Racing. Countless hours and memories that will never be forgotten.

Everything from Battletoads on the NES to Kameo Elements of Power on the XBox 360 was GOLDEN to Semi-Perfect Silver in my eyes from RARE.

Only half way thru the video so far but as a massive Rareware fan (I’m from the same county) and N64 fan (my system from age 11-16) I’m enjoying myself. My order; 1) Perfect Dark 2) Goldeneye 3) Banjo-Kazooie 4) Banjo-Tooie 5) Conkers Bad Fur Day 6) Donkey Kong 64 7) Jet Force Gemini Love all these games. The other 4 I haven’t played other than a race or two of Diddy Kong Racing around a friends’ house. Rareware leaving for XBox ruined my late teenage years lol. Now, back to the video…

Banjo-Tooie is hands down fantastic!

You know how in the options menu on Diddy Kong racing there's a password system where you can enter a phrase and it'll unlock a cheat code? The best phrase you can enter is Jointventure which will unlock two players in The adventure which is a lot of fun because then you two can choose to work together to make sure that at least one of you gets first. Also here's something I learned back when I played this game in the '90s and if you actually let go of the accelerator and then boost green fire will come out and the boost will be faster. This works whether you're using the item for boosting from the blue balloon or if you go over a boost pad in the ground or the boost hoop in the air.

I remember Jet Force Gemini looking *really* cool, as a kid.

Diddy Kong racing also has two unlockable characters which was a very foreign concept to me as a child for a racing game. I was so excited to unlock Tick tock lol He's so broken

Some of these games I play on emulators cuz it makes it much easier cuz I can save my progress at anytime, so if I mess up, I can just reload my game save.

To this day I'm still shocked that not only did Rare make Conker's Bad Fur Day, but that Nintendo actually gave it their official seal of approval. Imagine being a parent and getting this game for your kid thinking it's a cute game for kids on par with Super Mario 64. And while I am miffed that GoldenEye was #7, I admit that I haven't played this game since I was a kid, so I may be biased because of nostalgia, but I get your reasoning as to why it isn't higher. Anytime you bring this game up, nobody ever talks about the single player; they all talk about the multiplayer.

I can totally appreciate where you’re coming from, but I loved the single-player mode in Goldeneye!! But I have to agree: that game can be downright frustrating and annoying at times!!

Jet Force Gemini's biggest issue is the controls. I played it on Switch but ended up abandoning it.

27:54 I fully agree with you. Perfect dark is easily the best FPS on the N64. I actually find it annoying how absolutely revered GoldenEye is. Don't get me wrong I actually like GoldenEye and I enjoyed playing it back then and I am enjoying playing it on the switch now, but perfect dark and proved upon it in every single way. More features in multiplayer more customization in multiplayer, two-player co-op campaign and then a mode I have not heard of before or since then with the counteroperative mode in the campaign which is also a lot of fun. So many great features and great weapons and I love the secondary functions and it's Just an awesome game that is more awesome than GoldenEye as it improved upon everything. Whenever I actually get out my N64 which right now is just locked up in my storage unit but whenever I actually get it the first game I always want to play is perfect dark because it is my favorite N64 game.

Goldeneye is still goated I will say it might be a skill issue however it’s a skill adapting to a janky “to todays standards” controls and lag which I didn’t find difficult then and don’t now but it’s an acquired taste.

cement. this'll be a long one so get ready. i didnt even know the mickey game was from rare, i had it and i think there was 2 stages i never EVER figured out how to unlock. jet force: never played it killer instinct: i dont like 1v1 fighting games :D dk 64: i loved the dkc series so this game got me super hyped, but yeah i hated it. i could never put my finger on it but it always felt off. (nowadays ik its the ton of items and how none of the chars interact with each other) also for some reason, i never got the final coin(?) to fight the final boss, idk i swear my game was bugged. i liked the music and worlds but man this game, i dont like it. goldeneye: yeah i agree fully with you. it was awesome as a kid, super fun, but coming back? the controll is horrible, i hate it. absolutely hate it. and yeah some missions are confusing. great memories, prob a bottom pick for me nowadays. blast corps: never even heard of it. perfect dark: ive seen speedruns of it and idk it just doesnt appeal to me. i really cant tell you why. conker: my parents heard from a friend its an "adult" game so i never got the honor of playing it but ive seen so many memes over the years... really time i play it. diddy kong racing: i dont like it. cant tel you why, i just never liked it. maybe mario kart 64 just had me sucked in too hard. banjo kazooie and tooie: first things first: i never beat them as a kid cause i played them when i was 5-6 years old and back then i could BARELY read and the quizzes have a timer in both games. other than that... amazing games absolutely love them. i feel like they taught me about social interaction. love the music, love the world, the characters the noises they make when they talk, the googly eyes on everything. i do have to say tho that for me its very clearly tooie thats better. worlds are bigger and more connected, controlls are smoother (the fact banjos roll attack lets him move freely in tooie is such a huge plus for me) the amount of minigames etc. overall its just the better game, but both are fantastic, ive never realized the "more dark tone" but then again i was 5-6 years old. grunty industries... you have to enter this level with the train and back then i didnt know you can call the train from any station by reading the sign. i never opened the factories main door so when i save and quit i thought i softlocked myself and started over lol. yeah its a super confusing world but i like it. witchy world best, no questions asked. i think we mostly shit on the bosses cause the first game didnt really have any. yeah they are a bit boring, but they usually make up for it with funny dialogue aswell there you go :) found your channel randomly and if you ask me: yes old content

Perfect Dark multiplayer doesn’t get the love because of how late in the console life cycle it was. We all moved to the spiritual sequel to this Timesplitters 2 as soon as we could!

#12 on the list Star Fox Adventures 😂 JFG and Donkey Kong have horrible sections where their ambition outstripped the controls and tech - the barrel jetpack?! They play test failures cemented their place at the bottom of the list. Maybe they are less bad on the remakes.

Pretty much agree with every spot, but I didn't see Banjo-Tooie getting the 1st place. I think the first one have the perfect balance of collectibles and world sizes. Something that the second missed the mark a bit.

What ruined Kazooie to me is having to go back and net the notes again after you die. So basically, you have to complete every level on one life. It's BS. That's one thing the Xbox version fixed.

I also love banjo tooie so much. it was kinda like dark souls with the connected worlds.

Banjo-Tooie has had a hard time. BK was mindblowing and just like every other successor to very popular games you can only lose as a dev: keep it the same, you will be labeled as lazy and money grabber. Change it and you will be labeled idiots. They did very well with BT actually and the game "growing up" a bit makes sense as players grew up as well (kids becoming teens etc.). I guess the real problem was most players moving away from their N64 in 2000 so this game never really could shine the same way BK did.

My top 3 perfect dark, goldeneye, dk64 and bonjo kazoi both same good for me.

I do think that rare pushed the n64 to hard in some of their games to the point where the frame rate bogs down too much. Nintendo played it smart with Mario kart 64 using 2d karts to help keep the frame rate up where Diddy kong feels a lot more sluggish.

To just disregard the remake's multiplayer as "generic" was a miss. It wasn't as good as the original, but it had many unique traits that set it apart from truly generic shooters.

Because if he tried SNES I think it's obvious the top three are just going to be the DKC trilogy and I don't know I mean I also liked killer instinct on the SNES but there weren't really any other games from rareware I played on that console. Although maybe the NES could be a curious one or the Game Boy maybe? Although the issue with Game Boy is near the top or at the top it's probably just going to be the Donkey Kong Land trilogy Although I actually hope to see donkey Kong land 2 be really low on the list because it tries too hard to be too similar DKC2

Does Dinosaur Planet deserve to be counted as the 12th RARE N64 game? Considering we got StarFox Adventures on the GameCube that was basically the same game only with StarFox Characters being inserted into the game's story and gameplay elements.

I’ve only played Donkey Kong 64, Conker, Banjo-Kazooie and Goldeneye. Goldeneye has aged but still a good time I was born in 2000 so I grew up with more modern shooters with better controls so it was a bit of adjusting, Donkey Kong 64 is a good game but Jesus Christ going for 101% is a tedious slog. Both Banjo Kazooie and Conker are some of my favourites of all time

DK64 at 8 is quite a take. I dont agree with the criticisms on DK64 because I loved the game thus I loved collecting every single collectible there was. I just knew by collecting like crazy there was always going to be a good payoff...and there was. Very similar to Tooie...loved it because it took a game I loved and amped up the complexity. I was willing to be lost in it for hours struggling because the game is so good.

jet force gemini oh my good... i gave up back in 2006 on the N64 on a platform section cause of framerate i wasnt able to make the jump but i realy tried to get in whit the controler and it kind of workt??!!!.. i had all 3 characters and was 30% done but my fingers startet to hurt i dont know... just remaster this game for PC... it is good! but you will get in pain while playing to loang

Since we bought a Switch I've been surprised how good the Super Nintendo games are and how bad the N64 games are. They might have been cool on the N64 but I don't like playing them on the Switch.
