Seems like you criticized a lot of the THUG2 levels for story missions rather than how well designed they are. I’d put almost all of them at or above B tier because of how condensed they are and packed full of combo lines.
Same. Some of the best levels of the whole entire series are in Thug2. The updated Warehouse, Barcelona, Australia, Skatopia, and the underrated Pro Skater
It feels that way. I know it's his opinion but I wonder who actually thinks the new Warehouse is worse than Hotter than Hell, it just doesn't feel right. At least Square Eyed Jack sorted them by design instead of "I hate this mission, this level sucks"
Didn’t know this would be a ranking based on missions. When it comes to level design, Manhattan, Barcelona, Moscow, New Jersey, and Skatetopia are all S. And then Santa Monica is at least B.
@@trychaser2518 Even in the PS3/XB360 version there are distinct areas. You can skate freely between them but text comes up on screen telling you when you changed areas. And the missions and gaps in the pause menu are divided by what area they are in too. So it's open world but the game still treats the areas like different levels.
The only major changes I’d make is putting Warehouse and Foundry in S tier. I think Foundry is amazing, and Warehouse is just way too iconic to not be in S.
@@cxx23 just that he played them all thoroughly, had some info about the real world locations and explained in detail for every level how well spots are strung together
@@cxx23 Yeah honestly one thing I've learned from reading the comments from this video and square eye jak's video is that there's basically NEVER a consensus with these type of topics
The berrics would probably be really good if it was in Skate 3 or more realistic Skating games, it just doesn't seem like it would work in an arcade style game
I strongly disagree that school 1 doesn't hold up to today, and it's pure nostalgia. Ik he gave it an A, but I would even argue that school 1 is better than school 2. Playing that level today, on pro skater 1 and 2, now that you can do big ass combos, it flows soooo well. I can't get that kind of flow on school 2. School 1 is my #1 favorite map.
Had a lot of fun making my list alongside yours. :) Agreed with you for the most part, maybe just one grade higher or lower than yours on some of them. You gave Kyoto a C, but it's a S for me. It's huge with good combo potential, fun to explore as it's part inside and part outside (almost feels like 2 levels in 1), there's the kaiju/Ultraman fight, it's cool to get on the rooftops...I love it!
I feel like the ranking can completely depend on what you do in the levels, my favorite ones growing up were the THUG1/2 and THAW levels because they were so much more fun to explore than the “classic” ones
It would be fun to do a separate ranking for the pre-made custom levels in Create-A-Park, maybe just one game at a time because there are so many. Every game has some wild ones that the devs obviously had a lot of fun building.
The fact that you rated the levels based on the missions and not on the design baffles me beyond belief. This whole list is messed. Beverly Hills in D, ok champ. Whatever you say.
It feels like you're not really focusing on anything concrete for the placements, one second, it's the level design, another is missions associated with it, and then another is "Pro Skater 5" (even though you said you weren't going to base it off of the fact they were from Pro Skater 5, you still did.) It's inconsistent, and threw me for a loop when you put good levels in low tiers.
Man seeing my favourite level in Downtown THAW in D feels bad. Just has such amazing combo potential, line or freestyle. Even the challenges aren’t too bad like collecting the sneakers
Interesting video, made me think about my favorite in the games I've played (THPS3, THUG2, THAW and 1+2). S-tier for me, purely based on the levels and not the challenges: Canada, LA, School 1, School 2 and Streets (maybe Australia and Berlin too). Most hated level by far is Skate Heaven, solely because of the annoying laugh every time you crash. Taking into consideration all the challenges, Downtown has to be my least favorite. As much as I like the level itself, the roof gap challenge is just controller-smashingly tedious.
You're right, thps4 levels were a downgrade after thps3 level design, too empty (Zoo might be the most boring). I'm still sad and disapointed to this day 😅
When I think of THPS1, the level I associate with that game the most is Mall. Just find that one perfect line all the way down and go. Such a great classic level. I can understand not liking Downhill Jam (I like it) because it had jank to it. But Mall is great. It's like a race course for doing tricks. Like 1080 or Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder (Which is such an underrated game)
Skate Ranch as an F was not what I was expecting. I LOVED upgrading and skating it. One of the best experiences I've had with Tony Hawk games. I suppose you don't like American Wasteland at all, according to this list. I think it was a great game.
THPS2 levels are, hands down, my favorites. I think their simple layouts and realism perfectly fits to the physics of the game, making simple gaps kinda challenging but very satisfying. For me, Hangar, School II and Marseille are S tier. But nostalgia probably comes into the equation. Anyway, fun video!
Nice video, only thing i disagree with is Kona being a B & New Orleans a C. The whole park section at the back of Kona is redundant because its like a 1:1 scale of the actual park so you just over everything. (C) New Orleans is a A for me. great level design. rooftop gaps, skate lines, bright & vibrant level, heaps of level interaction. Idea for video "Top 10 hardest missions?" 🤷♂️
i forgot how much i loved the School 2 level! And I had a nostalgia love for Burnside, but you're right that it was pretty small. Like with the Tampa one, i'd love to see it as a part of a bigger city- like what Skate does
I like how you thought about the goals when ranking the levels, interesting take. Did you purposely leave out THP8 and THPG? Could do those as a separate video!
So I'm gonna be completely honest; while it's not a great level, I'd put Downhill Jam in D tier, not F. Especially not over the 2 terrible stages from 2X. I also think Downtown is better than NY, School 1 is better than School 2. However I'm glad to know that other people also think Canada and Cruise Ship are the 2 best stages.
Ironically enough, my favorite Tony Hawk level is the London Underground from Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX. I really wished they'd make it playable in a Tony Hawk game.
I pretty much agree with everything but Warehouse and Mall..I get the reasoning behind both but warehouse is always fun to me for some reason and so is mall..especially now with the remake, you can combo around the whole level over and over..definitely an A or even higher for me with warehouse and mall is an A
Thought it was going to be based more on level design, but I guess its a completely different list when you consider the objectives, an excellent level for free skating can definitely be ruined by bad goals.
if Tony ended up in Smash Bros. by some miracle, what level would his home stage be based on? Warehouse is the most iconic pick, but it's boring, so let's not. something like Skate Heaven or Skatopia would probably the best option, I think; they're both relatively well-known and have unique aesthetics that stick out from a lot of the "average city/skatepark" levels. Cruise Ship falls in this category too, but I'd rather have Daisy Cruiser as a stage.
THPS: San Francisco THPS2: School 2 THPS3: Canada or LA THPS4: College or San Francisco THUG: New Jersey or Moscow THUG2: Barcelona or Nawlins THAW: Santa Monica I think THUG has the best levels overall and THPS3 has the best park editor
I feel like the only thing the levels should be judged on is their design as, if we're to judge it on story/game related stuff as well, the better games will have the advantage regardless of how good the actual level is
hawaii is S tier this is blaspheme! mctwist, town is vibrant colored, and the tiki with the bonus level. i guess it doesn't have the best skatabaility but aesthetically its perfect
My problem with the video is the angle of the game footage... It is unfortunately very annoying to me. Otherwise it would probably a good video as always.
I enjoyed most of your analysis and opinions, but the things that stick out to me are the Carnival as an A and your utter disdain for Downhill Jam. Maybe it's the sepia tone/brown color schema of the level but I absolutely hated that one. I still absolutely adore the Downhill Jam and that secret tape is assuredly the most fun and rewarding one to get in any of the games.
