Tau start collecting was a set with an Ethereal, a commander, some Fire Warriors and some Crisis Suits. Now Crisis Suits almost cost the same price alone.
I've been playing less than a year and I can already tell Dark Angels are gonna give me so much grief, but I can't choose another army, they're absolutely the coolest in the setting for me.
@@rogue_of_the_winds1286 At worst the dark angels still have all the toys the marines do. And a roster of special characters. I would only sweat their being "bad" if you grind tournaments.
@rogue_of_the_winds1286 You'll be fine as long as your not grinding GT+ events. If your playing a local group focused on fun, you aren't going to get blown out, and they'll bring lists that will be fun, even if they are challenging to play into
This guy has a Time Machine or cloning Device because there's NO WAY he making two 1 hour videos everyday by himself with out some warp shenanigans going on
Some videos are done over a longer term, others can be rapid fired. The slideshow presentation with the minimal skeleton of editing is optimized for throughput. He's reported that his typical daily videos are 2-3 hours work from start to finish. When you make youtube your day job that is a sustainable rate.
Like not to shit on him, but this format takes minimal editing. Probably 2-3 hours of editing per hour of video. Counting record time, that's still only 8 hours a day. It's weird how amazed people are at that. Honestly I don't think people really even think about it.
Here's a Trick for Tau Players Current Combat Patrol gives you a Devilfish. It's nice but I think it would be better if you got something damage-y to help the Commander. What you can do is if you plan on getting this Combat Patrol get it in pair with Hammerhead Gunship tank. Hammerhead comes with turret options for both Hammerhead and Skyray. So what you do is instead of glueing Devilfish top hatch you use spare bits from Hammerhead to convert it into a Skyray or Hammerhead (if you are fine with having 1 Hammerhead with Railgun and 1 Hammerhead with Ion Cannon). Because you don't glue the top hatch you can remove the gun option if neccessary so you can still use your Devilfish as Devilfish when you need it and quickly change it to a battle tank.
Honestly the new and old one would give you all the infantry you would need. If you already have pathfinders, you can turn the pathfinders into breachers/strike teams.
@@Kingofdragons117 I Liked both of your comments, because they are helpful and put me in the right..zone? I can get the disappointment at GW, but I would still like to have a place to have fun too I'm getting into Tau, snatched old CP, and I've got a Pathfinder Team from Kill team, I will take the new CP when I can and I was a little bummed by the duplicate Pathfinders, haven't built it yet so didn't know it can make breachers too. Now I'm planning to combine both suggestions to have two Devilfish and 2 Breachers Teams (I'll make the one from old CP as Strike Team for the ethereal to lead and farm in the backfield) and I have the option for artillery, very nice thank you I'm waiting on a Crisis box to arrive, which will go with the Commander, and I've got 2 Piranhas and a Firesight Team beacuse the are too cool :D and plan on taking a Broadside, any suggestions?
@@elRandomTk If you don't mind Kroot, Farstalkers lead by a trail shaper provides a good forward unit. You can get the hammerhead kit and make both the Skyray and Hammerhead with the CP Devilfish if you want. Just don't glue in the top bits. Magnetize your crisis suits. Use a mix of 2x2mm cylinders and 1x3mm discs. Saves you a lot of trouble of getting multiple suits for the various loadouts. A second Crisis box so you have all the weapon options since you can only have 3 Fusion blasters in a crisis box. You can supplement those with the ghostkeel fusion blasters if you want, but still missing one. Broadsides are pretty cool. Definitely get one or two. Again, magnetize the weapons/arms of it so you can hot swap options. My only issue with Tau atm is that I wish the Plasma Rifles had rapid fire to make them a bit more standout compared to the missile options on Fireknife.
I got the Combat Patrol and Exalted of the Red Angel as my starters for the WE and It was brilliant to flesh out my force. I do love waves of Zerks clattering forward so it was a win win.
@@wailmerpail i'm so mad i haven't bought DA combat patrol. All units are cool and useful. Redemptor Dreadnought is like the centerpiecesy centerpiece model there was
I will keep defending the Admech patrol box, because the box is not the problem, the state of the faction is the problem, imagine if suddenly they made Admech an elite army on par with Marines at the very least and all of those unit point costs doubled, then that box would be 520 points, which would be awesome. I feel, Admech in 10th edition is epitome of how bad GW is with money grubbing schemes, the amount of plastic you get is fine, but then it all costs very small amounts and needs a lot on the board to be effective
I get you, the units look nice but the box really lacks a cool big model. You put a chicken in it, you have good value box, which I would consider buying 2 copies of and get into Admech, while now I feel meh on the new CP, and I will sit on an unopened old box who knows how long waiting for a better deal. I would like all kinds of infantry to have a bigger punch because cool tech Imperium doesn't have, maybe a little more thoughness for some units, but not comparable to Marines lol that's nowhere close to lore
Skitarii have always been mooks, from their first codex they've always been cheap infantry, not guard tier cheap but certainly spammable. Good accuracy, mid guns, shit body, thats always been the ranger/Vanguard thing.
@@whitewall2253 Skitarii are quite capable in the lore, though. In the AdMech books they aren't quite space marines, but they are pretty resilient, extremely well coordinated, and generally very deadly.
I agree with this. Asmech needs to be reworked into a proper elite faction next edition. For now, you guys will have to be satisfied with having the best video games of any sub faction
Or normal terminators and new upgrade sprue so if you don't collect Dark Angels, you only need to sell the upgrade sprue and still get generic options.
The continuation of removing center pieces like vehicles is disgusting. Combat Patrols should cover all aspects of a faction. Give at least a damn transport in every space marine cp...
As far as tyranids go. It’s literally cheaper to buy the basic starter set and a box of barbgaunts and it’s like $100 for the CP and you have marines to go with it. Kinda nuts really.
I think the disconnect between player votes & total points in the box is that it makes more sense to try to estimate what % of a viable 1500 point army each box gives. For example, although Death Guard provides 405 total points, you are really only getting like 15% of a horde army list & 15% of a Space Marines/Elite list. The same issue comes up with Thousand Sons & their Tzangors (which don't really have a great list to build around), or the Tyranids patrol with components of a hoard, monster, & flying (?). By comparison, every single model in the Drukhari or Custodes box could be included in many different lists (the former because of how the faction's playstyle revolves around transporting infantry, the latter due to a general lack of model diversity).
Astra Mitarum have the same thing, whilst there's a lack of any tanks (Though I really doubt they'd shove a Dorn in it), all the units included are regarded as good picks, and can bulk out your army to start with.
i would argue aeldari windriders are not niche at all, they are generally good into a huge range of targets, and they totally decimate MEQ targets and ork green tide. they are speedy and can zoom around the board for objectives. you can take a bunch of small squads, or a really big squad and attach characters. not every aeldari list runs them, but they are absolutely a bread & butter unit that any aeldari player would be happy to have! i own 12 and still might want more eventually lol! (just give them shuriken cannons)
I don't understand the logic behind most of these. The space marine one doesn't even have any battleline, the Death Guard one wasn't a legal list when it came out in 9th ed, and half the space marine ones have characters that can't join units. It's the same issue as the leviathan box where they added a gravis character and no gravis units.
@@waynesellers4078 there are going to be 90 issues & 9 combat Patrols. If they alternate issues between two combat Patrols, like the space marines and Tyranids that would take 20 issues to get a full combat Patrol.
@@colin_painting_adventure OK that makes sense but it should say 2 per 20 issues and that does mean it is £120 per combat patrol (although you need to spend £240)
I got 3 of the Dark Eldar and Eldar boxes back when they were $92 on Amazon but still haven't gotten to assembling them. Looking forward to them eventually.
Man I wish I had seen that because I’d have joined the eldar that day. Only one I saw that low was thousand sons which I didn’t need anything in the box but the character
Funny, I was thinking that you'd all be hoping for at least one half-way decent 1kSons detachment when GW inevitably release your Codex: Tzaangors? I mean, your army is already a mostly AoS faction 😛
I hope k sons gets a improvement in a new combat patrol. Start collecting tzangors is not what you want for k sons. Thing is, what would you do for a k sons CP? Sorcerers are in a pack of 3 you cannot seperate one out. Rubrics are the main stay of the army, so gw wont give you those... if it was 10 rubrics, 5 scarb occults, 3 tzangor enlightened and maybe a tzangor shaman would be interesting. K sons seems to have a thing about solo characters. Not alot of them.
Great video! As a returning player (2nd edition) I am quite lost on what are and are not good choices. I am interested in returning to the DA Chapter and was curious if the DA + BA Combat Patrols are a good choice to get started? I saw you mentioned they combo well. Would a different combination be better, e.g. Space Marines or Space Wolves + ? Or would I better be served spending my money on individual purchases and forgoing the box discount?
I remember when the original Combat Patrol came out in 3rd/4th edition - 400 pts, min 1 troops choice, max 1 HQ choice (but not compulsory), max armour total on vehicles of 33 (so the heaviest you could technically have was a Dreadnought - not even a Leman Russ would fit). Nice quick way to start playing whilst you painted up the rest of the force, and you could even have a nice centrepiece.
While the DG combat patrol is so bad i wouldnt buy it myself, being lucky enough to win one definitely helped me get a great start on my army That said it would take one heck of a discount for me to buy it out of my own pocket. But with how objectively terrible it is, it gives me a little hope that theres no way it can be made worse
I miss the 9th ed sisters CP. Unique poses and a great price. And regular sisters kits have so many bits you can easily work around the lack of options in the CP. :(
The Custodes one is really bonker. It sits at 780pts minimum, but you can easily bump it to 950pts if you use one Custodian Guards and one Allarus and turn them into a Shield Captain. Not a ridiculous thing to do, and that gives you a fully playable 1k list! Throw in one or two enhancement to round out the list and you are good to go! Better yet, if you want to get silly with it you could run an Auric Champions detachment and use 1 Custodian Guards and 1 Warden and turn them into a Shield Captain, and all 3 Allaruses can be used as Shield Captain too. That still leaves you the Guards and Warden at 4 model and usable, and brings it to 1190pts (although it might not be recommended xD).
I got the ultimate starter set for 16,000 yen about 80 pounds and then bought the tier-down starter set for 10,000 yen a standard combat patrol is 18,000 to 20,000 yen here in Japan. The disparity in price difference between the starter sets and combat patrols is ridiculous. 80-90 pounds for two combat patrols and a little terrain is a fair price. I would like to buy some of Games workshop's other armies but not at their current prices.
As a Black Templars main, the BT Combat Patrol is mid if you want to expand your Black Templars army because you’ll need plenty of Crusaders, an Impulsor is very good, and the upgrades sprue is useful, but aside from looking cool, the Marshall isn’t a great character compared to BT’s Epic Heroes (I own 3 Marshalls and NEVER use them), and Intercessors are just spam. The real problem with the BT Combat Patrol is the CP army itself because the Crusaders can’t fit into the Impulsor, only the Intercessors can and MUST start the game embarked aboard the Impulsor according to the rules for Dedicated Transports (otherwise the Impulsor is removed and counted as “destroyed” in the first battle round). The problem with the Intercessor squad starting the game embarked is that their sticky objective rule triggers in the Command Phase, but they can only disembark from the Impulsor in the Movement phase, which means if you want to use the sticky objective ability, the squad has to sit on that objective until the next round’s Command Phase. Furthermore, the ranged Intercessor squad doesn’t match well with the melee Black Templars army. Sword Brethren are obviously a better fit for the Black Templars Combat Patrol. Hopefully, the 10e Black Templars CP box will defy the trend and be a better version than 9e’s.
One thing to note about the AM box is that, while it is infantry focused, that in-and-of-itself is maybe not the best thing. For example, good luck if you want to play a regiment from any other world. I've been finding this a consistent challenge with GW stuff as of late as an older AM collector. I'm sure the really old guard would find it even worse. Even back in 5th, we had multiple variants of the battleforces to help us get started.
i think the 10e tau combat patrol works really well with the 9e combat patrol. in the 9e combat patrol you got 2 leaders for fire warriors with only 1 set of fire warriors, so with both boxes you now have a unit for both leaders. additionally in the 10e box you get a devilfish, if you build at least one set of fire warriors as a breacher team you now have a full breacherfish combo (breachers with cadre fireblade in a devilfish). with both boxes you have some decent guiding with pathfinders and stealth suits plus a strike team if you built a set of fire warriors as one. you also have a spare commander (who i recommend not building like the combat patrol does as it sucks) so you can grab a set of crisis suits and have a pretty decent list.
So i think had they kept the Fireblade or added the Farstalker to the tau box it would have gone from "good" to "great" value wise. Also it would have given you at least 1 "Complete" unit one mostly complete and a hook for a common unit. That said i think the Tau Combat Patrol + the Boarding Patrol i got last year + a crisis team & extra devilfish will put me pretty close to having a decent army as a starting player.
To be fair though on the Drukhari. Most recent competative list don't include that many Ravager and limited use of the Raider in favor of Venoms. (as to the comment about multiple copies of the combat patrol box). I'm not debating that it's a good place to start a drukhari army and certainly could start with 2 boxes. It just might be a little heavy on the vehicles with 2 boxes depending on your army list goals.
I’m trying to get back into warhammer after a 20 year absence and want to build a dark angels army but have no idea where to start… I’m not sure if I should buy the combat patrol and am a little confused on what to get. I bought a pack of hellblasters just to have something to put together. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The Dark Angels one isn't a bad one necessarily, as Intercessors, Bladeguard Veterans and Hellblasters are all pretty handy units. The Blood Angels box also makes for a useful one for its contents.
Yeah, the new AdMech's CP is bad as a set for a separate game mode. But what opinion have you got about the old AdMech's CP (with Enginseer and Onager)? IMHO, it was better set both for a separate game and for a staring of collecting of AdMech army.
6:35 Thousand Sons is objectively the worst combat patrol. With AdMech at least you get units you want for your army. It’s held back by garbage rules. Oops all Tzaangors in my wizard army just feels awful.
Hey guys, new to the hobby and decided to go with Black Templars. Im quite torn between the Combat Patrol and the space marine half from the leviathan box, any advice what to go for? Since i would share the leviathan with a tyranid player it seems good
Usefull, Discount, and points are tangible metrics. A importart one is a matter of taste - the 'fun' factor. To elaborate; Something akin to the upcoming sister of battle battleforce with 95% seraphim, that is monotone and no fun imo.
ok but with the CP game mode im now also interested in how they perform in game. there is now more than looking solely at monetary value. Edit: i see you already briefly mentioned it and i seem to have the same issue of collecting actual CP game data
What was even gws goal with the admech combat box? Genuinely it's not even a patrol. There's no internal balance. No ap, all weapons are low strength. Baffling.
The tyranid box is so bad tho. Mono-pose gaunts with fleshborers? Yuck. (Other weapon option are REQUIRED for them to be of ANY worth) Also... the only units in that box (with given loadouts) that see competitive play are the 2 ripper bases... let that sink in.
How do GW think... I mean GK they update Crowe but don't update the others in terms of size comparison. They look like space marine kids next to primaris. The models are amazing yes. I bought 2 combat patrols of Grey Knights, but really wanting to convert my marines to primaris sized.
With the eldar box I mean it's great but those sculpts are so old I had those exact models I think when I was about 8 I'm now 30, I remember my warlock being different but man that wraithlord needs a new sculpt looks like a toy compared to the new walkers out there now. Sad that the way to balance the boxes is make them all worse rather than make the struggling ones better. I quite like the Astra Militarum box but losing the tank feels bad as it's such a staple of their force. I love the orks but miss that old box, if you don't like the beast snagga theme (which I'm not the fondest of) you are stuck with that being your entry point. The new one for space marines is so tiny, you would be mad not to buy blood angels box and sell the upgrade sprue.
Based on the current model range, I'm predicting that the nurgle subfaction in chaos daemons will be getting the new combat patrol and a new model, likely a revamped Epidemius, as the current epidemius model is old and ugly. Nurgle is the only CD subfaction without a chariot, so most likely Epedemius will be an option for the chariot, along with a generic character and a shooting platform as options.
Me, and ad mech player. This box seems nice for buying those models that came out with psychic awakening in 8th edition, hell considering the spammability manipulus buying boxes until I have 3 of that commander does make sense. The problem is as a start point, your immediately beholden to buy either 2 boxes of Kataphrons and/or 3 ironstriders to have anything that threatens things that aren't even more horde based lists.
Seriously hold back on buying the 10th edition boxes. They need to get solid statistics for how their prices per models in the game is going into unacceptable territory. Have some pride for your hard earned money..
I feel like GW would be better with leaving out the chapter specific upgrades from the space marine CPs, and instead putting in an extra half box of something (like 5 intercessors/reivers/infiltrators), and then just making a space marine CP based on playstyle targeted for new players. We can always paint our minis as we want, and if those new players getting the box want the upgrade sprues for a specific chapter they are not locked to a box with minis they don't want.
Looking at getting 2 of the Custodes boxes, I have 2 of the old starter box. So between both versions I should have a good army to start playing Custodes. I passed on the Necron box due to having leviathan and the last 2 years of Necron battleforce boxes. My Necrons are good to go competitively.
In the Custodes combat patrol, you can also make one warden into a shield captain, an allarus terminator into a shield captain in allarus armour, leading to 945 points already in that one box. With 2 enhancements, that is a 1000 point army on the nose. Could also have a unit of sisters instead of the enhancements for home objective.
I went halves in the ultimate starter set with a discount on the box that was discounted to $240 on gameology. We paid $120 AUD each, I thought it was a good deal.
The LoV one isn’t particularly exciting, the units inside are not what you want to deploy nowadays (bikes may be an exception but they are not stand out). Besides that, the points inside are measly
Being a Deathwatch player that is finally going to 40k from Killteam I didn't mind that the box isn't the best but I know I'm not going to be hardcore into the competitive scene I don't feel too bad.
The Space marine Combat Patrol is the worst because you can buy it cheaper by getting the 40K starter box and Librarian separately, which also throws in most of the Tyranids Combat Patrol. The fact those two weren't ranked at the bottom baffles me
Half-way through the video, can't believe guard is appearing only now in the middle of the ranking rather than the bottom. Maybe it has been around for long enough that people don't feel like it's such a ripoff anymore.
