I'm not even a Sonic fan but Sonic R has some absolutely incredible songs. Living in the City and Can You Feel the Sunshine are just fantastic songs. It doesn't even sound like a video game song and instead sounds like something you would hear on the radio
Came here to recommend Sonic R's soundtrack to Kit & Krysta as well as to anyone who hasn't heard it. I listen to the album casually on my iPod because it's so enjoyable and it brings a lot of positive energy when you listen to it.
It's funny because the composer purposely made the ost to sound like a normal album, so if a kid was playing, their family would hear it and want to listen to the soundtrack outside the game. That's what happened with my mom when I used to play Sonic R through Sonic Gems Collection. She loved it so much that she wanted to buy the ost
7:15 Funny enough, this song does have lyrics! It was composed by Brad Buxer who worked with Michael Jackson both on this game and off. Ice Cap's music was repurposed from a song he composed in the 80s that was never released at the time called "Hard Times" by his band The Jetzons. The Credits theme for Sonic 3 by itself was the inspiration for Jackson's track "Stranger in Moscow". There's a lot of intrigue surrounding Jackson's involvement with Sonic 3 and Ice Cap's music is a big part of it.
Was gonna say this so I’ll just add: there seems to have been a fair bit of involvement of Jackson in Sonic 3 but it’s been hush-hush for some time now for a myriad of reasons, mostly due to MJ hating the instrumentation in the Genesis and not wanting to be credited. In Sonic Origins all those tracks were wiped are replaced with early prototype renditions. Another obvious inspiration is Carnival Night Zone being the basis for Jam
Janet Jackson also seemed to borrow from Sonic for at least one of her songs "Everywhere I go, every smile I see, I know you are there, shining down on me" seems like it might sample Bridge Zone from the Sonic Gamegear / Megadrive game.
lol, glad you posted this. I was about to say that. But then again that whole late 80s/early 90s had that slap synthizer you'd hear in a Janet Jackson album.
JUSTICE FOR SONIC CD. That whole ost was fire, especially the bad future tracks. The Boss music with that nasty Bootsy Collins sample, you could NEVER. lol
Would love to see Sonic R music ("Can you Feel the Sunshine") and more Sonic Adventure and especially Sonic Adventure 2 tracks. The quality and variety of SA2's music is off the charts: Each character's stages use a different genre of music. Would highly suggest City Escape, Pumpkin Hill, Security Hall, Meteor Herd Supporting Me/vs Biolizard, Fly Into Freedom, Unknown from M.E., and of course, Live and Learn
Aw man, a shame you guys skipped Sonic Unleashed. Has some of the best music in the series in general. I'd recommend the main theme aka Endless Possibilities and Apotos Day Act 2 aka Windmill Isle (Day).
Ehh k no owing these two they probably would thought it was trash I don’t even feel like they gave the games they chose a proper fair shot they chose some of the worst song form some of these games like who tf is listening to mission street from sonic adventure 2 city escape would’ve been a clear choice if not that then metal harbor or live and learn. Or even some of the themes songs for each character
Good list! One song you HAVE to listen to though is Live and Learn from Sonic Adventure 2. It’s a great one! And like you said, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a huge variety to go through. 😁
As I get older, I have such an appreciation for the FM synth of the Genesis/Megadrive and any time any variant of the Yamaha chip is used in other systems/consoles. It’s just so iconic and in the right composer makes amazing sounding music.
Kit and krysta, the transition from classic sonic to adventure was jarring for some fans. However, fans like myself who played the game with an open mind ( and heart lol) loved it!
For Sonic Adventure 2, there is a TON of hits but honestly, the 2 you really should have done is City Escape and Live & Learn. Arguably, the 2 songs people thing of most in the game when thinking of SA2.
Haha this was fun! :3 Some of the song choices were odd and random, I wouldn't expect it, but if you ever do this again, definitely ask fans to pick out some of the best songs from each game! ...Well, I guess it's good not to just listen to the best ones since it's not always that, haha, so it's fair enough! :3 Good video.
The main reason Sonic 3 is so distinct and you feel like lyrics could be written to it I feel is because it was composed by Michael Jackson which SEGA used to base off of a lot of aspects of Sonic
If you want stellar menu music, everything from Sonic Mega Collection is worth your time. The intro theme and the Options & Extras themes are the standouts for me, both pretty chill. If you want something higher energy, the "Sonic World" theme from Sonic Jam has a certain retro charm.
Fun Fact: Spring Yard Zone is almost note for note a Bobby Brown song called "Every Little Step" which is likely why it hasn't appeared in a new Sonic game since AFAIK.
I love learning about Sonic stuff with you guys as you go along. Listening to these tracks is really interesting and the music in Sonic games are really cool! Haha!
Ice Cap Act 1 was actually written by the composer who wrote tracks for Michael Jackson. It later became the song "Hard Times" by the Jetzons Btw, some of the old Sonic devs moved to Nintendo and worked on games like Mario Kart. It's probably not a coincidence that Sonic games and music remind you of that!
Yup, the Genesis OSTs were definitely stronger than Sonic CD, a lot of people tend to just favour CD because of the CD quality audio imo, hopefully we get some Sonic Heroes reactions too!
Yeah. I'm a little disappointed they stopped so many songs during the build-up. A lot of more modern Sonic songs have longer intros before they get into the really good parts of the song. And Tropical Resort is one of them.
@Da Nintendude I'm not even a Sonic fan, but man, understanding even basic music theory, you'd think they'd give each song at least a little time to build up. Like, damn.
Just in case you’ve made it this far in life without someone telling you Michael Jackson did some of the music for Sonic 3, now you know! Also, absolutely listen to more Sonic CD (especially the Past and Future variants), they’re some of the greatest tunes in existence 🔥
6:50 That was one of the songs that Michael Jackson allegedly composed for Sonic 3, I guess that's why it sounds so contemporary, in a sense. Most Sonic music from the Genesis era was clearly inspired by the New Jack Swing style of the late 80s/early 90s though.
@@SonofMrPeanut Not really anymore. Logically, any song that was in Sonic 3 but not in Origins (besides themes replaced by &K) was done by Michael's team.
This is actually a remix of a song called Hard Times that was recorded by another composer on Sonic 3s soundtrack. I believe he had Jackson connections too (maybe music producer / creator for him? Idr).
i have a lot of questions for whoever selected some of these songs. you didn't make sure they listened to stardust speedway bad future or live and learn??? sand hill is also one of the most random songs they could've picked from adventure 1
Yeah to be honest I didn't even remember Sand Hill existing. I've played through Adventure and am familiar with most of the soundtrack but Sand Hill must not have stood out because I didn't remember it at all. Palmtree Panic for CD was certainly a choice. It's a good song but it _IS_ pretty generic, compared to the rest of the soundtrack.
Ice cap zone is actually a reuse of a song called Hard Times iirc, and that has lyrics! The artist who wrote the song worked on Sonic 3 soundtrack. Chemical Plant and Ice Cap Zone are my favorites.
You guys picked the weirdest songs from the Adventure games. Like you should’ve listened to Speed Highway, Live and Learn, City Escape, Final Egg, White Jungle. So many other good songs.
Loved the sonic music in smash brawl, 4 and ultimate. Sonic Frontier, Forces I love music def I'm here, fist pump, live and learn, escape from the city, super sonic racing. Sonic Concert was amazing too.
That song sounds remarkably "modern" because it was (probably) written by Michael Jackson. It uses a chord progression he often uses, notably "Stranger in Moscow", which came out around the same time.
I'm really glad you guys gave sonic music a chance! Say what you will with some of sonic's games because people have a lot to say with every individual game, but both the fandom and those who enjoy video game music in general as a whole know Sonic's songs are boppin'! Enjoyed your guy's reactions
Little disappointed that they ended up stopping most of them during the intros of the songs. A lot of them get a lot better later on. I adore Tropical Resort, but the first minute is mostly just build-up. Also feel like the best songs weren't always chosen, but hey, that's fine. I don't even remember Sand Hill personally haha. It's just not a level I think about when I think of Adventure. I think the better songs of Adventure are actually a lot closer to the one song they listened to from Adventure 2.
Rumbling HWY is one of my favorite songs from Sonic Adventure 2, first song I tried to teach myself on my guitar haha Sea Gate from Sonic Heroes is another catchy one I tried to teach myself, it's severely underrated.
Missed opportunity with no Flying battery zone in S3&K, No Stardust speedway Bad future in SCD, No City Escape, live and learn or at least Metal harbor in SA2, shouldve gone halfway into Wave ocean for the best part, and no aquarium park in Sonic Colors.
Oh my god I got so worried for Sonic Mania when you guys didn't vibe with Stardust Speedway!... Lights, Camera, Action! borrowed A LOT from it. I'm glad you actually liked the Sonic Mania tracks though (despite the ranking LOL). That score is truly top notch, among the best soundtracks composed for games in the past 6 years easily. Also, I was totally surprised with "Wave Ocean ~ The Water's Edge" Drum and Bass beats style! I love that style! It was heavily used through Bomberman Hero's score for the Nintendo 64, which is an absolute banger of a soundtrack.
These videos have been an awesome watch as someone who's been a lifelong Nintendo fanboy but got into Sega and Sonic about a year ago, I've been so obsessed with all thing Sonic over the last year I can't believe I hated him as a kid.
Surprised Sand Hill was picked for Adventure 1 over, I dunno, any of the regular action stage themes. The Red Mountain and Speed Highway themes are some personal highlights for me
Just wanna clarify the whole "act" thing real quick. Sonic has zones, which contain acts. The zones and acts are pretty much Sonic's version of Mario's worlds, which contain levels. So for example, when a song is named Hydrocity Act 1, it's the music from the first act (or level) from the zone (or world) called Hydrocity. Any act after the first one usually has remixed or reimagined music from the first act. If you want more Sonic music, I recommend you watch a great video/documentary by Liam TriForce here on RU-vid called "Understanding the Music of Sonic the Hedgehog", which goes into detail about the creation of the music and gives you samples of a lot of tracks. It's also a good video to learn more about the games themselves, which also get talked about for the sake of context.
Press Garden Zone Act 2 is probably the best song in any game over the past five years tbh. Deffo an underappreciated classic. Of note, Tee Lopes, the composer on Sonic Mania, was involved in multiple other Sonic fan projects like the Sonic 2 HD prototype and a few of the games Christian Whitehead made before Mania as well. In fact I believe the entirety of Mania was made by people who worked on various fan projects and ROM hacks.
Man, there is a wide range of music that I love from each game that I like. I would like to see you guys listen to the Sonic Unleashed OST. There is plenty of music that is great coming from that game.
You may be interested to know that Sonic CD has two DIFFERENT soundtracks. The US version and then the JP/EU version. While I personally think the JP/EU version (which is the one you guys listened to) is better overall, the US version has some iconic tracks on it too.
@@kitandkrysta Yeah, When I was a kid never realized that there was ANOTHER version of the soundtrack. Whenever you can, look up Sonic CD US soundtrack. The tones of the two soundtracks radically different.
I was seriously hoping you’d select studiopolis zone for Mania and was SO HAPPY to hear it, I don’t know much sonic music but this is one of if not my favorite sonic songs
Sonic Unleashed had some real bangers in its soundtrack. I'm assuming either A) Kit just couldn't handle Chip, or B) they just couldn't find a copy for the 360/PS3.
I firmly believe that Sonic Rush has one of the best soundtracks of all time (in the realm of video games). I highly suggest you do yourself a favor and listen to at least a few of the tracks from that game!
Great video! Gonna share a few more things here. First of all, glad you went with the original Sonic 3 Genesis soundtrack as it's never been used again due to licensing issues. The PC version and Origins game use different tracks (that are originally from the Genesis beta actually!) The final Genesis game, a lot of people believe Michael Jackson worked on to some extent without being credited, which might be why the music still holds up so well! I see another commenter already mention this, but his keyboardist (another person credited on Sonic 3) went on to form his own band called the Jetzons, and a track they released YEARS after it was composed called "Hard Times" which sounds a lot like Ice Cap zone! Shared this mashup on discord the other day, but I'll stick it here as well! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iPNgC3gBaq4.html With Sonic CD, that OST is pretty divisive since there's an English and a Japanese soundtrack that are very different from each other! I'm not familiar enough with either to know what version the tracks here came from, but there's debate in the fandom about which of the two is the better OST! I really love game OST videos like this, would love to see more of them in the future!
The song from the San Fran SA2 level is a classic (and sadly not mentioned here). Ya'll also missed on the hyper cheesy tunes from Sonic R, which are a statement on their own.
Something you guys should absolutely check out to get some more range is the Sonic 30th anniversary symphony! They cover pretty much all the main games and some extra stuff like the Game Gear and SEGA Saturn releases!
Sonic's music is a huge part of it's appeal, and you will get many comments saying you should've listened to certain songs. I will not say that... even though I want to. Fun video though I enjoyed it a lot. And frankly I expected not to lol
By the end of Sonic week I think you guys will be sonic fans. I'm a big Nintendo fan but recently I've fallen in love with the Sonic games so I feel like guys will too.
If Midnight Greenhouse isn't in here I'll be disappointed. You guys may or may not know this but Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles had a music-conspiracy that turned out to be true that Michael Jackson's team worked on the soundtrack but didnt have his name on it. Which is why a lot of it sounds like something he could sing over. He was also a huge Sonic fan :)
It's quiet tough to choose between Sonic 3 and Sonic 2 music because I like both nostalgically speakingb of course because Sonic 2 have some of the best soundtrack in the game as a result whatever I listen to the soundtrack it brings me back my old childhood days with my neighbors playing Sonic 2 on their Sega Genesis model 1 on the other hand Sonic 3 have some calm relaxing music and some that really pumps me up as such is quite difficult for me to choose which one is the best to be honest.
Also fun fact about Sonic CD. There are 2 soundtracks! There was one for the Japanese version and then for some reason they decided to make an entire other soundtrack for the US version. Pretty much everyone agrees that the Japanese soundtrack is better. Y’all did end up listening to the Japanese soundtrack which is great!
If you're willing to look outside of the games you played, Sonic 3D Blast is worth a listen. The Genesis & Saturn both have their own soundtrack, the latter having Redbook audio. The Green Grove Zone themes would be a good way to go about it. I'd advise listening to the Genesis Act 1 and the Saturn Act 2 (one of my favorite pieces of video game music).
It's funny how you guys talk about how much Ice Cap Act 1 sounds like an actual song with lyrics, because it's actually Hard Times by the Jetzons! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H2OWC5Hosv8.html
“I should go back to smash and see the different versions” know you will know the pain of all Sonic fans realizing that Smash only has one original Sonic remix
