Didn't know much about Ben but I loved that he didn't outright cancel fragrance in skincare. He addresses that just because his skin can't tolerate it doesn't mean others can't either. Some people just like the sensorial experience fragrance brings into skincare. Love that there's no fear mongering there.
Undisclosed fragrance is an issue. A lot of people with allergies have to avoid fragrance out right when we actually need to a void a select fragrance or fragrance groups.
@@artchick07 i agree that this is an issue, but I'm just not onboard with fearmongering a certain ingredient just because your skin cant tolerate it. It would just mean the product isnt meant for you. I know of a skincare line "Sind Beauty" that does the whole sensorial experience thru fragrance and essential oils. So people who cant tolerate oils and fragrance will know not to use it as they arent the target audience of the line.
@@Shaz-oo8lq I can get anaphylaxis from oranges and citrus oils. I'm not the target audience for most products however I think everyone has a right to know what fragrance is in their products to so people won't be afraid of all fragrance. Fragrance isn't bad, but it also shouldn't be allowed to be unnamed either. It's not about tolerance of a fragrance. Some people can get very ill especially since more companies are going towards naturally derived fragrance versus synthetic.
I feel like CeraVe has been around and been so popular for so long. I don't feel like it blew up that much from TikTok because CeraVe has been reccomended from dermatologists for years and has been circulating in the skincare realm for a long time. I know that CeraVe products can be "boring" but I feel like there formulations are amazing for sensitive skin. Just basic and easy especially for minimal skincare. No need for all the flashy packaging just for the exact same thing in a prettier tub imo. But vanicream is better definetly. It's even more sensitive friendly. But I still love the aspect that CeraVe is very versatile and easy to get. But if your really enjoy skincare and seek a more "wow" product, I can see why they ranked it the way they did.
I don't think it's amazing for sensetive skin considering how Liah and Ben described the cleanser as drying, not to mention their mineral sunscreen also gave the same feeling😬 I think why it ranked so low is because of the sensory experience and especially the efficacy factor...Cerave is too reliant on ceramide, niacinamide and HA when it comes to skin barrier recovery, while it's still effective, it may consume more time to see obvious results...I also think why they described it as safe is because it provides options for almost all skin types, while other brands definitely gonna give you much more better performance but you really need to have a great amount of knowledge in order to pick a good one..The inkey list for example, while also being affordable, they have much better delivering performance.
@@Hi-uc7tw I don't think one product from one brand defines the entire brand. Even though one cleanser he tried was drying doesn't mean all of the products are. CeraVe has many other cleansers meant for dry skin that are less drying. Even though I do feel as though CeraVe is safe, I don't think many other products provide "miracle results". Many studies find that higher percentages of certain ingredients give no benefits and adding a bunch of random beneficial ingredients to a skincare product doesn't really do much.
@@katcustom8959 most of their cleansers are, even the latest release which was made to cleanse make-up properly wasn't really effective..and yes you are right one product doesn't define their entire brand. However, most of their products are just average and pretty similar overall;the texture, delivering performance and especially ingredients like i said earlier, their products are too reliant on ceramide niacinamide and HA or basically that's what their products are about... I also wouldn't say other brands promises such miracle wonders but they gave much better and faster results..well, I'm not really talking about percentages here, I'm talking about the formulating technology where many other brands outhere like skinceutical, the inkey list, Paula's choice, etc aim to produce products that are more inclusive by coming out with products that has good consistency which fits with almost all skin types, and not to mention they strive to get more quality ingredients..just because a product has the same ingredients as others, it doesn't mean they are the same, there are many kind of niacinamide ha or ceramide..In cerave case, their products are just average because the ingredients and the technology they used overall are also average and that's why they have cheaper price than the others(not saying all expensive brands offers more advanced formula and quality ingredients, some are just marketing gimmick). And if you're talking about adding bunch of random ingredients, then that's also a problem with cerave, there's many fillers in the products and unnecessary addition, you can look it up if you want..
@Bianca yes that was my point 😂they ranked it low because it's just average or plain..but the op did said other brands have the exact same thing but in a prettier tube which is not true, the technology and the formula is what differentiate them, as well as what ingredients are in them, offering more options to consumers.
I'm 28 male and had acne all my life, I spent so much money on skin care but nothing helped. 2 years ago I discovered Cerave and it literally changed my life. Nowadays I rarely get any pimples. Sometimes simple skin care is the best, believe me I tested so many products. Now I only use 1 Cleanser and 1 Cream from Cerave and it is more then enough.
Yes! Cerave was the only thing to really heal my years worth of acne while still being gentle enough to not irritate my skin, and I’ve tried pretty much everything you can think of.
This! I literally had the same experience and also 28! I've also had my fair share of pricy and fancy brands over the years, and the simplicity of CeraVe's products (specifically the Hydrating Cleanser + Daily Moisturizing Lotion + Sunscreen) was life changing and helped restored my skin barrier - more than any brand out there! Now, do I also absolutely love to splurge on Then I Met You's cleansing balm because it feels like going to the spa? Absolutely! But CeraVe (or another affordable brand with supposedly boring products) is a solid baseline that I'll keep going back to for probably a long time.
Middle of God-tier and Ben&Liah Approved : Benton Ben&Liah Approved: Cosrx, Versed, Then I Met You, Paula's Choice, The Inkey List Middle of Ben&Liah and It's Ok: Naturium It's Ok: Innisfree, Glow Recipe, Biossance, The Ordinary Finish & Recycle: Cerave (why?) A Hard Pass: I Dew Care, Neutrogena, St. Ives
I like the communication chemistry you two have. You don't cut each other off, you see the other side, and present clear and pleasant arguments. Great job!
Perhaps there can be a comparison for Uriage, Bioderma, Avene, La Roche Posay, and Vichy? And comparison for Cerave, Cetaphil, Aveeno, Physiogel, and Ego QV?
THIS is the kinda comprehensive skincare analysis I’ve been looking for! Not just going through ingredients, but knowledge about the brand identity (marketing), the business side (who ultimately owns the brand - is it just PE guys looking to profit or someone who actually cares about customer satisfaction), etc. Thanks for putting this kinda content out, would love to see more.
For me the ordinary/ the inkey list and CeraVe are on god tier, because without them I wouldn't be able to afford a comprehensive skincare routine. The price point is a real gatekeeper for so many people.
Innisfree was my gateway to Korean skincare. I used to use the St. Ives scrubs but when I read that they were really bad for my skin I stopped using them.
I've used many expensive brands. My skin has never been better since trying Cerave. My esthetician told me to try and it feels so healthy. It's definitely God status for me. Glow recipe would be a hard pass for me. I agree with Ben about it being perfume. Other than that I'm on the same page. Thanks for another great video. This was a good one. 🥰
Yes cerave is healing for the skin. I'd rather go with underwhelming in feeling but overwhelming in taking care of my skin. I finished the biggest tub just in my face 😁
Cerave has been sold for a second time. The pm moisturizer has been reformulated for the 2nd time and not for the better. Some people find the new formula irritating. I am not sure about any of the other products. Thanks
@@happytx1860 I love the hydrating cleanser, pm moisturizer, and the moisturizer cream. There is nothing that works better for me. I'm not a fan of the renewing retinol.
i thought match hemp hydrating cleanser was the most non stripping cleanser… however it’s the Cerave hydrating cleanser that actually takes the crown.. the SA cleanser, and moisturising lotion is ok too for its price. I don’t rate their face lotions.
@@threatlevelmidnight3588The new formula now uses sodium hyaluronate is the salt of Hyaluronic acid and water which has lower molecular weight(this means is easier to penetrate skin, therefore it’s more irritating to skin. The level of Potassium Phosphate is increased in the new formula. Potassium Phosphate is irritating to skin (acidic) Some people are having issues with the new formula. Maybe it's cheaper to make the new formula. Thanks
Glow Recipe's products are effective, but I find it overpriced. You can find similar ingredients in CeraVe for almost half the price. I agree with most of the rankings, except for CeraVe. Their moisturizers really helped repair my skin barrier. I love, love CosRx ❤️ I learned about CosRx through Liah's videos. Definitely improved my dry skin.
The ordinary is super affordable and it cured all my skin problems in a way that none of the other brands you mentioned did. I also admire how creative Brandon was when he was still alive. I think it’s a cut above a lot of the other brands mentioned here.
Yup they really kickstarted a lot of these other brands like good molecules, inkey list, revolution skincare, versed, etc etc. They made a lot of ingredients available to the average person that previously you could only find in luxury skincare.
When Ben said that he once loved the Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Face Wash, I was so shocked, because that stuff gave me a terrible skin rash that took forever to heal. 😬 Just goes to show that two people can have sensitive or reactive skin and still experience the same product very differently.
Liah, I didn't know Ben before this video, but I'm so happy you brought him on your channel! The way Ben talked about how the Ordinary's accessibility could possibly have an inverse relationship with thoughtfulness and intentionality was really thought-provoking!
Crazy how I damaged my skin with St Ives scrub on a daily basis and wondered why I had terrible breakouts. I am deeply traumatized lol just wanna say that you turned my life around Liah. You spread knowledge behind my skincare products and I press reset and my skin is doing great now (though i still have textures on my forehead which come and go as it pleases)
Loved the vid! Would love to see a Part 2 of this collab with Ben with more brands (e.g the other "clean" Sephora skincare brands like Farmacy and Youth to the People, or higher-end like Elemis!)
I absolutely love Glow Recipe. Everyone complains about the fragrance but I don’t think the fragrance is nearly as overwhelming as I was lead to believe before I tried the brand. The fragrances are light and each product contains less than .5% fragrance. I understand people who have very sensitive skin don’t like it but I love their formulas and my skin loves their products. I think it’s worth the price. One of my favorite brands of all time.
Why I 100% agree with Neutrogena's ranking from my own experience with it back in middle school. I had also tried out the grapefruit facewash and instead of a more clear complexion my skin came out dry and irritated. Back then didn't know my skin was the sensitive type so I ended up putting it through a lot 😖
I love the ordinary. I love the cost. I would have never used some products that I needed. I understand their concern cause I have had issues learning what's best for my skin but I love that it's affordable and vegan. GOD for me.
Y'all roasted Cerave so much! I honestly don't understand the criticism AT ALL. I have sensitive skin, and Cerave products have been a godsend. Just because their products don't contain a bunch of bs ingredients doesn't mean that they're UNDERWHELMING. And if their foaming cleanser is too stripping, why not use the Hydrating cleanser designed specifically for dry skin? You don't have to insinuate that their products are not for sensitive skin if you're not using them properly based on your skin type!
I have sensitive/ reactive skin and everything i tried from them gave me little puss filled pimples and hives. I went to them for the fact that they are simple. I think it's the hyaluronic acids they use but boy does my skin hate it.
Hey! Thanks so much for watching this lengthy video. Please note that the opinions here are subjective to our own experience and there’s no right or wrong ranking for brands. I think that’s the fun of these types of videos-to learn each other’s perspective. Everyone’s skin is unique and everyone’s brand experience is unique as well. Please don’t feel disheartened just because a brand you love has been ranked low in the tier does not invalidate your positive experience! If anything, it’s great to see your point of view. So thanks for sharing that.
i completly agree with Ben on Innisfree. i started my skincare with Innisfree and now im slowly trying other brands. i mainly stayed in the green tea line and it treated me well.
wow, THANK YOU, this actually really helps cuz I have no idea where to look for the right skin care for me. a year ago I started using innisfree and that was probably the first time I tried skin care that wasn't a clean & clear or neutregina face wash+face cream combo and it really helped my skin at the time and made it feel so much softer & calmer but recently i feel like it's not doing much for me so it shocked me when you said literally the same thing! will be checking out some of these other brands you mentioned, I'm desperate cuz my acne started going away but now I feel like it's headed in a bad direction again...
Been following Ben in Tiktok for quite a while and I started using Vanicream face wash because he recommended it, and Cerave DID NOT WORK for me. So I now have the Klairs Vit C, Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting serum, and some Benton products because of him. They're all so good.
I love this skin care ranking. It was so informative and I got to know a lot about the different brands! You guys are so eloquent in expressing your thoughts on the different brands! :)
How much i love this girl i can't explain....I'm super happy whenever I see her..I love her soo much..and she is soo talented and one of my favourite influencer 😍 💕 ❤ 💗 💖 💓 😍
I am SO VERY impressed by your joint depth of knowledge. You are Influencers? Well, you both deserve millions of subscribers and a €€€ raise!!! Please do more videos together as you truly complement each other. Btw, please just have a regular conversation looking at each other: don't talk directly to the camera. Your fans will feel as if we are 'eavesdropping' on an intimate conversation between two highly educated folks with beautiful vocabularies. As an English Teacher, I love listening to you both.😊 You are both wonderful. Thank you for sharing your professional expertise and keep up the good work !!!
Love the video! Most of the ranking videos I’ve seen are straight to the point-it’s good, it’s bad. And with this one yall really highlighted the pros and cons which I love. Also love that you’re collaborating with other youtubers- I share a lot of skincare opinions with Ben so I’ll be sure to check out his channel
People just need to understand that theu don't need * "every skincare ingredient" * they see in the market... The ordinary was a saviour for me as a teenager, as my parents are not willing to spend a fortune for my skincare products 😭... So it's because of some people, these kinds of brands like the ordinary will die... Save it please.
I LOVED this! It was so nice and informative to hear what brand is being bought by other companies and who are the owners etc! Sooooo fun to listen to! ❤️❤️❤️
I think you were too hard on CeraVe. I have sensitive skin and their products have really helped me. Great ingredients, no fragrance, affordable and easily accessible. I'm surprised you rated Naturium higher.
I’ve been using neutrogena for so long, and I really am seeing a difference, but since I use mixed products, ngl but CeraVe is amazing! I recommend both. Neutrogena had amazing products for sensitive skin and is #1 dermatologist recommend. Now CeraVe is amazing for moisturizers and more! So my point is, I understand why those brands are so low but, depending on your skin type, it’s absolutely amazing !
naturium is approved but cerave isn’t?….ok. naturium’s scandal aside, it seems like you guys only enjoy products if they are “high end” when most drugstore products literally have the same ingredients, they just happen to be in a less appealing packaging.
Ingredients alone don't tell you about the performance or sensorial experience and texture. It's been covered by many skincare youtubers. Formulation isn't the same as the ingredient list.
Great video but I'd have to say that my experience with a couple of these brands has been completely different. I tried COSRX for months after many recommendations and it completely destroyed my skin. Left me with more breakouts than I'd ever had and terrible skin texture. Switching to CeraVe has honestly been one of the best decisions I've ever made. it's almost completely cleared up my skin and I have so much more of a glow now. I've found that a lot of the Korean skincare brands come highly recommended from people who already have pretty great skin and can handle much harsher ingredients. For people with sensitive skin like myself they can be a bit of a nightmare. I would advise anyone and everyone to do their own research and test the products out for themselves before making a judgement. What works for one person's skin isn't necessarily gonna work for yours. And if you have sensitive skin approach COSRX and similar brands with caution!
Also, I use unscented Lubriderm lotion and really love the simple basic packaging and dermatologist-tested/approved. The less noise and flash, the better. I purposely avoid noise and flash. lol.

Then you're still a beginner in skincare i guess..try exploring more skincare and you'll understand why they put it that way...Cerave is good and SAFE but there's much more better products outhere
@@thegoodkindofweirdo Mr or Miss. I can’t have an opinion ? I completely agree with Liah that skincare is not one size fits all. She was very kind to take time to respond and share her thoughts. I was expressing I was genuinely shocked because I find Cerave to be a brand that does the job. Sure thing there are other brands with more amazing products lol. I think maybe is you who wasted your energy? Not everyone online is mean btw lol I promise.
@@Hi-uc7tw not a beginner, I spend all my money on buying diff skincare 😅oh boy we probably all do that here haha. But I still stand by my statement, I like simple :))
Cerave's BP Acne cleanser saved my skin without sensitizing my acne-prone and super duper reactive skin like other BPs or BP cleansers. The rest of the lineup I agree is just alright and I use the moisturizing cream only as eye cream and lip moisturizer, albeit religiously. But the BP cleanser I can't stop repurchasing since I first started using it. I even go into a bit of a panic mode whenever I'm running out of it.
Have you tried Greek & Gorgeous? It is my favorite brand for vitamin c and retinal. It is a Hungarian brand very similar to TO but with much more elegant formulation. Their aPad and cleaner are awesome too
I think Neutrogena is unfair, they have some really good products seperate from the acne products. Rapid wrinkle retinol and their gentle cleansers are staples
I don’t agree with putting Cerave in the recycle category. It’s a great brand recommended by ‘dermatologists’ and not by influencers. There’s a reason why it’s a constant in derm clinics and it has healed many skin conditions. I believe skincare should be evaluated based on its fundamentals and not based on the frills that influencers look for. Kinda disappointed with Liah on this. But it’s their opinion ✌🏻
True, they seem to be talking about fancy ingredients and formulations while actually simple skincare is the best (especially no fragrance). That’s why it’s better to follow dermatologists like Dr.Dray and not influencers that consider dimethicone a bad ingredient :)
I also love the Paula's Choice BHA liquid so much I decided to change my skin care routine to just Paula's Choice, not really a fan compared to using the BHA liquid with The Ordinary products which I felt was more effective. Thankfully I bought my Paula's Choice products during Black Friday deals
I am confused. When I check the ordinary, it has less ingredients to any Korean product. I used vita B3 source which made me so allergic to the product and realize there were so many ingredients compared to The ordinary. Anyone want to clarify this? I am really confused why they said the ordinary has scary ingredients
hi, I'm really like this video, although there are some of the brands I've never heard about, but brands I know, you have really good comments, exactly my using experience. Could you please continue with part 2 for this series? I wish you will have some brands like The Body Shop, philosophy, The Face Shop, la roche posay, skinfood, some by mi, Pyungka Yul, Skin1004. Thanks for the video again ^^
Liah you look amazing! You‘re glowing! I liked this video, but I think every brand has good and bad products in it. Some more than others. And since every skin is different, the only way to find out what is good for you, is to try it. But for a little overview this is super helpful 😊 thank you so much for this video!
I got into skincare during the time that The Ordinary started blowing up and I've mostly stuck with it and the Inkey List as well as Japanese brands due to price (lol) and wow so many of these other brands are kinda new to me now since I kinda stopped paying attention to newer products.
Neutrogenia had me in a chokehold on me in highschool lol. I used to be lifeguard in highschool and my skin barrier was so damaged. The Neutrogenia water line helped my skin not fall off lol.
Cosrx was a god tier back then because of their products' simple and clean ingredients like they literally put one key ingredient per product. But people nowadays couldn't care less about 13-ish steps in their routines and opt for products that are already packed with everything. Cosrx is still nice tho, a good brand for ab newbies
