Yeah, I can see why Calvin thought they meant they were shooting the movie with cameras. I'm sure it was really supposed to just be a pun on "Now Showing" vs. "Now Shooting".
You showed the cut down version of the Goldeneye teaser… after he takes his shot, Bond then walks to the camera and out of the shadows. Looking towards the camera Bond says “You were expecting someone else” The Goldeneye teaser is IMO the best trailer for a 007 film to date… and one of the best ever. First saw it at the cinema when I saw Batman Forever in the summer of 95.
It's hard to overstate the impact of that Goldeneye teaser trailer. There was a bit of a feeling in the air that Bond was out if date; Dalton was out, the Berlin wall was down and political correctness was in the air. And then this masterpiece hit the screen like a sledgehammer. It still gets my heart pumping now.
I loved how both the Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies trailers felt very 80s/90s action film-ish. They are shown to the audience to be Bond films a good ways in, as Brosnan is revealed and the familiar music kicks it up a notch. I noticed that the Tomorrow Never Dies teaser shows Brosnan wielding the Walther P99 in place of the PPK. Without the context of the upgrade in weaponry near the end of the film, that probably threw some hardcore fans for a loop when they saw that.
You're not overreacting. I saw Goldeneye in the theatre, and I was perplexed by the huge buildup/reveal of Sean Bean when the trailer told the twist straight up. I'm pretty sure this is one of those cases where the director probably wants to strangle whoever put that trailer together.
The Goldeneye teaser triggers a lot of nostalgia. We used to have a VHS box set of the films up to Goldeneye. Every VHS had the Goldeneye teaser first, followed by the theatrical trailer for whichever film you were watching. Always left you thinking, we should watch Goldeneye after this film.
"How could [the Goldeneye trailer] have given away the biggest plot twist?" That bugged me too! I can only imagine what the impact would have been if that had been a surprise to me.
@@ROONLD i can agree with that. I really like Skyfall. It isn't in my top 10 because of the reasons I've stated but i really overall love the film. Spectre i hate. 1 of 5 total bond movies i don't like.
I don't think Sean Bean being the villain was ever a twist. It was discussed in the press conference. I do miss them filming special stuff just for the trailer "Bond.........you know the rest." Brilliant!
Yes in real life, everyone knew. In the movie it was meant to be a twist. I remember articles nitpicking on how an Irishman was playing Bond and a Brit playing the villain.
Hmmm… I’m not sure about that. I remember reading a contemporary review that said that there was a big twist they wouldn’t reveal, and in another section of the review they said that Sean Bean dies before the credits but his name’s placement in the credits might suggest otherwise.
I think it’s really cool that in the TND teaser that we get to see an alternate version of Brosnan’s gunbarrel stance, one very similar to Moore’s as well!
Showing the plot twist with 006 in the trailer always bothered me as well. It's like if the trailer for Empire Strikes Back showed the Darth Vader-father reveal.
I loved that Goldeneye teaser trailer where they talked about the new Era of Bond for the 90s and having Brosnan shoot out the 007 from the letters. Really cool.
I wonder if they revealed so much from GoldenEye in the theatrical trailer because of the 6-year gap after Dalton and the mixed reception/performance of Licence to Kill at the time. Oversharing to really make it clear to the audience what the stakes are with another 00 and make it really clear to the audience what they’ll be in for with the new Bond.
I was told by someone who was a teenager in 1995 that as they saw the theatrical trailer for Goldeneye in the cinema, when Q came up on the screen everyone in the cinema laughed and cheered with joy that he was going to come back again after 6 year. the only actor to come back from the classic series of movies :)
9:59 I couldn't agree more--I love when stuff gets taken out of context to create a whole new context, _and_ the camera angles and editing to make it happen worked perfectly in this instance.
Finally! Some love for that amazing TWINE theatrical trailer! I've been waiting for years for someone to talk about how incredible it is!!!! Oddly enough... echoing your GoldenEye trailer music anecdote - when I was in Media Studies in Year 10 we did a segment on film trailers, and we had to all bring in a form of promotional material and talk about it and I brought in my TWINE DVD so I could play the trailer in front of my entire media class. Just very a very rewarding experience having that music blast through a battered old speaker system.
You will never know the excitement of being surprised by the Goldeneye teaser in 1995. The last time I had seen Bond was when I was a Junior in HS, and this was me in the adult world after college.
You are so right with Goldeneye teaser trailer - so atmospheric - remember watching it on a bank of TVs on a cold November 1995 evening - then watched Goldeneye six times at the cinema!
The Goldeneye teaser is probably the greatest trailer ever made! Redefining trailers without the voice over as you pointed out. Then how kinetic the editing and music were… if only the film had sounded that good. The reworking of the gun barrel was the icing on the cake. The entire time, the production had gone to great pains to instil Robbie Coltrane as the villain until MGM decided otherwise. I first watched the theatrical from a cd-rom magazine cover disc and I was gutted, never expecting it to be ruined that much. Martin Campbell vented on it in interviews as well
Wow, Pierce had great trailers, I cant tell you how exciting it was to see the Goldeneye trailer at the cinema after Bond had been off the screen for so long.
Ahhh back in the good old days when the movie trailers just summarized everything for us. Nothing to speculate on. RU-vidrs must have had a hard time in the early 90s. 😜
Oh I hate those '23 things we learned from this trailer' videos. And pre-youtube no angry comments as the movie didn't link up with there fan theories!
no no no wait wait man!!! there's another version of the teaser trailer for Goldeneye where Brosnan walks up to the camera after shooting the 7 and says "you were expecting someone else" and smiles to the camera
While I do also love that GoldenEye trailer music (Bond ‘95 I do believe it’s called), I can’t hear the beginning without hearing trailer guy say “through the power of a breakthrough digital process…” from all the times I wasn’t quick enough with the Menu button when watching the Ultimate Edition DVDs, because they all began with a trailer for, err, the Ultimate Edition DVDs. Which, I don’t get - why is there a trailer for the Ultimate Edition DVDs on the Ultimate Edition DVDs? I bought the thing, why are you trying to sell it to me? I guess they also sold them all separately and wanted to sell the whole boxset to people who just bought one, but still, it felt a bit lazy. (Also it was painfully apparent with the Bond 50th Anniversary DVD set that they just used the Ultimate Edition DVDs and gave them new labels, because they still had that same UE trailer advertising “All 20 films” in a boxset that contained, err, 22 films).
I watched the Living Daylights the other day and got reminded of that annoying ultimate edition trailer-couldn't skip it fast enough! I loved how for the re-issues they now had covers of the Bond at the time looking grim/serious to tie in with Skyfall's mood [especially the Brosnan and Moore films!]
agreed man :) . Dont forget the Goldeneye vhs Bond movie trailer "looking for a little peace and quiet??? didnt think so!! " and the 1999 Robert Carlye narrated Bond Vhs trailer "It take more than one Bond......". remember the good old days of buy one Bond and get another free? :)
@@DafyddBrooks I remember that trailer and the VHS! They made a funny cut by having the 'What's Bond doing, I think he's attempting re-entry sir' lead into 'Well tell him to pull out'!
@@DafyddBrooks Ah, that’s before my time - by the time I got into Bond VHSs were long gone. I’m old enough to remember watching VHS tapes, but the VHS tapes I had were pretty much only Disney films. (I do remember when DVDs arrived and they seemed so cool: “wow, you don’t have to rewind them at the end!”)
Very interested to see your in-depth reviews of the Brosnan films when you get around to them one day as they'll be interesting to revisit and see if they hold up to your nostalgia given that even Die Another Day will be 20 years old next year!
@@strikerbowls791 It's a very old one from his original 'my weekly Bond series'. He's been re-doing them periodically for a while now [running up an hour each] with the latest being 'A View to a Kill' so Dalton and Brosnan re-do's will be coming up.
0. Maybe do the Lazenby and Dalton trailers together? 1. Aw man, bummed that one didn't have the "You were expecting someone else?" 2. The Goldeneye plot reveal was a bummer for sure 3. That Tomorrow Never Dies teaser was pure cheese, and those red orbs just made me think of bouncy balls 4. "Your new BMW..." wow, they took that licensing agreement really seriously if they name dropped it in the trailer 5. "Who are you?" "First thing's first." "I... what? I just asked for your name..." 6. I can't wait to see those cup holders, they must be important! 7. That Die Another Day teaser voice-over dialogue was pretty cringey for my taste 8. Honestly the editing of the last one was throwing me off, it felt disjointed
Pierce Brosnan was amazing as Bond. I liked his movies a lot and what he brought to the role. I liked his introduction to the role a lot. It was a pretty cool sequence. So I think that's my personal favourite.
Gosh, that GE trailer hits different in this day and age where they actually edited out elements in certain shots of NTTD for the trailer… They just didn’t care back then! That GE teaser, on the other hand… “You were expecting someone else?” gives me chills, and I wasn’t even around back then, so I can’t imagine how it would’ve felt like for people who were waiting since 1989!
The reason the TND trailer mentions "Now shooting around the world" was, yes, Calvin, exactly that - to make sure INVESTORS knew. There was big MGM share deal coming up and that is one of the reasons that the movie was rushed in production to meet that deadline.
I’m still very fond of the main trailer for The World Is Not Enough. Have to agree with you about the main trailer for Goldeneye, it’s quite crazy to think that they would give away such a big reveal like that, I don’t recall actually seeing that trailer back in 95 so happily it wasn’t spoiled for me…. However I do remember the Goldeneye Teaser which was soooooo great 👍👍
I remember so clearly seeing the TWINE theatrical trailer as a kid. It got me and my mate so excited for the movie. I learned the power of a trailer and how they could be, you know..... better than the film :)
The reason Paris's slap sounds stronger is you have none of the music and people talking tracks added on, as in the released film. Just the on-set audio. Does sound a bit odd though as they talk at a party with no other sounds.
I like how they use some alternate takes for the trailers. Like some lines are delivered differently to what they are in the final film. The firs one I noticed was Bond's "resurrection" line from Skyfall
The GoldenEye teaser trailer is not just the best Bond trailer, it's one of the best trailers for any movie ever. It had a big job of selling a new Bond, in a new unprecedented time, and that was why not having much dialogue (limiting it to two or three lines from Bond himself, including his famous introduction) and focusing on the action complimented by that INCREDIBLE music was a genius move.
i never noticed that by the end of his tenure Brosnan had gotten so popular that they lead with his name more prominently than 007 in both the teaser and the teatrical trailer.
Sean Bean was announced as the main villain from day one of the production. He was promoted as the villain in all marketing and it was never intended as a twist to shock audiences. I remember this all very well from when it came out.
I managed to avoid any reveal that Bean was the villain, and I soaked up anything I could about Bond. Somehow I didn't see that trailer with the reveal, only the teaser. I remember magazines promoting Bean as 006, Bond's friend who assists him on missions. We expected it to be a glorified cameo, and that 006 would be killed, to give Bond added motivation.
@@strikerbowls791 I remember Kevin Spacey [sorry to mention him!] asked for his name to be taken off the 7 title sequence to aid the mystery around the same time.
I love how some trailer re-releases cut narrators out for release dates lol. When Calvin starts getting side-eyed, the announcer would've come in saying "This holiday season.... the world belongs to Bond" instead of just "the world belongs to Bond" At the 11:20 mark.
Zao: "Who sent you?" Jinx: "Your Mama!" I remember that bit being in a lot of advertising for this film. Someone must have thought that was a real zinger.
I was 9/10 years old when Goldeneye came out, I was already a huge Bond fan and had seen most of the films on VHS. At the time, without trailers on the internet, I was lucky to avoid all info about the film up until I watched it, and I swore the villain was going to be an Auric Goldfinger type with an actual Goldeneye. 🤷♂️
14:57 Mr Dyson having a little bop to back seat driver 2 track from TND. Though all falls down when you hear the squeaky awful line "somebody's tampered with the bomb!"
Domestic and international versions are often different. For example, in the Goldeneye teaser, after shooting the 007 into shape, Brosnan walks towards the camera and says directly to us, You were expecting somebody else? Also, Trailer Voice Guy is in there sometimes, depending on the version.
What makes that scene with Q sad is that was the last ever scene and dialogue he did and spoke. That scene is the last time you see Desmond as q. Think we all know why.
The teaser trailer for Tomorrow Never Dies came out in, I think, June 1997. Filming didn't begin until April 1997. So they likely didn't have that much to work with.
The GoldenEye trailers transport me back to 1995 as a 15 year old downloading those trailers overnight on a 9600 baud modem and watching them over and over on my Macintosh Performa 550.
@Calvin Dyson The GoldenEye Teaser is edited on the Ultimate Edition DVD and Blu-ray: after Bond shoots the final letter (which turns into a “7”, leading the the 007 comes close together), Bond supposed to walk up to the screen and asks “You Were Expecting Someone Else?” BEFORE going into the Gun Barrel, starting the action part of the teaser. The full teaser appears on the Special Edition DVD.
Re the Goldeneye Theatrical Trailer giving away the main twist, trailers would never get away with that now given the online presence that they didn't have back then. Anyone remember when the Terminator Genisys Theatrical Trailer gave away John Connor being a cyborg and the 'twist villain' and the fans lost their minds and turned on the movie instantly. True it wasn't the best film ever or anything but that killed any momentum going in, and with the Teaser trailer having made it look like the main villain was gonna be the T1000 again, they could have salvaged something from that.......I think that was the final straw for some people re: giving away the main twist in a trailer?
A video covering the game trailers would be great Calvin. Looking at how they set up the game Bond vs the film Bond, how the games turned out in comparison to early concept trailers etc
12:30 do love the waffle to try and explain the title [rather than it being Bond's family motto]. Reminds me of that bit in the TND game where Elliot Carver says 'for you Tomorrow Never Dies'!
I remember the goldeneye trailer vividly. It was the first bond film I ever saw at the cinema and in the months beforehand the excitement was incredible!
The Goldeneye teaser was missing a line, I remember Pierce saying "You were expecting someone else?" after shooting the letters. Also, there is a much better Die Another Day trailer that is included with Nightfire on PS2.
You should review the Young Bond novel series by Charlie Higson and Steve Cole: "SilverFin", "Blood Fever", "Double or Die", "Hurricane Gold", "By Royal Command", "Shoot to Kill", "Heads You Die", "Strike Lightning", and "Red Nemesis".
You can say all you want about the Brosnan movies but one thing no one should argue is that Pierce Brosnan looked the part, was a terrific actor that gave it his all even though the scripts were not the best ones and most important of all, he LOVED being James Bond. For the new Bond we need an actor that actually likes being Bond instead of someone like Craig or Connery that on their later movies believed they were too big of an actor for that role.
@@shahzadimam8497 The only negative comment I've come across from Moore is his regret in doing View to a Kill but he was always happy to be an ambassador for the franchise, hosting documentaries etc.
It's impossible to know when you hire an actor how they are going to react to a role after 3 films, especially if there non-Bond films are not as popular [Connery] or get tired by troubled productions [Craig]. Brosnan was denied the part in Living Daylights in pretty brutal circumstances so relished his second chance and had some success outside Bond at the time [Dante's peak, The Tailor of Panama] so he was kept happy.
According to TV Tropes Brosnan was unhappy with the messy production for TND [apparently describing it as 'like pulling teeth'] and memorably laughed derisively when recalling the 'windsurfing' scene in DAD but these are minor.
You can't imagine how excited I was to see the GoldenEye teaser trailer. LTK was my first Bond movie in the cinema, and I waited six long years for something Bondian to happen. When GoldenEye was announced I was so anxious. That teaser trailer just blew me away! Even today it gives me goosebumps!
The version of DAD trailer you showed is a little weird. I’ve got an US trailer scanned from a theatrical 35mm print and Paul Oakenfold’s Bond theme plays throughout the trailer, not just the second half. Maybe they produced multiple versions for different territories?
Not being too harsh on the Goldeneye trailer! I absolutely hate it when trailers spoil stuff. Which is why I try to stay away from them as much as I can.
I have such fond memories of the Brosnan era's promotional materials. The movies, I don't have much fondness for, but the trailers, posters, and video games (heck even toys!) I have nostalgia flashbacks for days!
