Yup, too bad its either too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer (no insulation in that room)

I read 'Bag of Bones' like 16 or 17 years ago and vaguely remembered that I liked it but couldn't remember much about it. So last summer I listened to the audio book which was read by King himself and featured some really haunting, atmospheric guitar in the background and in-between chapters. Definitely recommend listening to that reading for anyone wanting to revisit it in the hopes of having their opinion changed - I thought it was an incredibly effective experience. 'Hearts in Atlantis' definitely connected with me. I slightly revised my rankings this year and it's still in my top 5. One of the handful of King books where I was profoundly moved by the characters and the theme that weaves these stories into a completed tapestry by the end. I've enjoyed many a King book, but rarely am I affected in the way this one affected me. If not for 'The Wastelands' and 'Wizard & Glass' hogging the top of my list, then 'Bag' and 'Hearts" would be in my top 3 for the 90's (along with the supremely underappreciated 'Desperation'). Other than that, I have the same exact feedback for 'Four Past Midnight' - there's a peculiar symmetry to it, in that the first two novellas are stronger than the last two, and the first halves of the last two novellas are stronger than each of their second halves. I almost quit 'The Sun Dog' because of the pace-killing redundancy that Pop Merrill introduces into the narrative. This collection was probably the most disappointing for me, mostly because of how hyped I was to read it and how great it started out.

Nice! Yeah I’m very interested in deviating bag of bones, not sure I’ll love it, but I’m curious. Yeah it’s hard not to put wastelands at the top and Wizard and glass near the top, right?

The new look feels like character development

Part 1? I guess he amped up his output in the 90s. Oh bummer to hear Nightmares & Dreamscapes is so low on your list. I really wanna read Four Past Midnight.

Holy shit! The Stand below books like Rose Madder, Nightmares and Dreamscapes and Bag of Bones was a surprise! That's changed a lot since your overall ranking. I'll do these videos too once I read all his books (who knows when that'll be) but I don't think I'll put The Stand in 90s King as it feels very 70s to me. Idk it makes sense to me to have it in the 70s period but I can see why it's in the 90s for you. I haven't read all form the 90s but I would definitely put The Stand at number 1 so that's why I won't count it now. I'm currently reading Insomnia and I'm about halfway through. It's like a 3 star read for me. Reeeeaalllly slow and has a bland main character but I'm enjoying being back in Derry. 8: The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (4 stars, a really enjoyable little story with a really good character in Trisha, and a few creepy moments, but it's definitely the weakest of what I've read in this decade) 7: Rose Madder (4 stars, an amazing first half and a wildly fun second half. I understand the criticisms with the supernatural shit but I had already heard that it was going to go supernatural before reading it, so I just went along with the ride and had a great time!!!!) 6: Gerald's Game (4 stars, a really suspenseful and provocative read that just lingers in my memory, it's super underrated but I do think the ending drags on too much. Chop the last 40 pages down to about 10 pages and it might be a 4.5 rating) 5: Four Past Midnight (4.5 stars, very underrated collection even if The Library Policeman is a shitfest. The Langoliers is super fun, Secret Window is one of the best things he's ever written imo and The Sun Dog is a really fun read. Library Policeman is entertaining but it is in no way good lol) 4: Wizard and Glass (4.5 stars, a very sad tale that builds the world around you and makes you feel like you're really there, but it's just a tad too long to get any higher on my ranking) 3: The Green Mile (5 stars, a near perfect novel that has an adaptation that rivals it, I know you prefer to watch the movie which I can understand but holy shit this book is so good!) 2: The Waste Lands (5 stars, action packed brilliance that I just couldn't put down, and it has so many amazing scenes with one of his best endings) 1: Needful Things (5 stars, not only my favourite from the 90s but just one of my favourites of his in general, absolute chaos and I can't say enough good things about it!!!) This might be a hot take, but if the rest of the 90s impresses me as much as these 8 books have, then this might be my favourite decade of his! So many weird experiments that pay off well!

I don’t think your take on The Stand is misplaced. For those of us who started reading King early in his career, it holds a special and powerful nostalgia, but compared to his cumulative work…I get where you’re coming from.

Thanks! Yeah, my take is it’s not bad, but there are much better and underrated King stories to talk about

I’d agree with that, definitely one of the better King villains. Whoever played him in the miniseries did a great job.
