I thought it was best Brad Pitt performances (the title says "Best Movies" but Fennessey said "performances"); I'd've had "12 Monkeys" in my top spot. Definitely not my favorite movie of his (although it's great), but his performance... I was surprised he was nominated for it because it definitely deserved an award. Performances: 1 - 12 Monkeys 2 - Moneyball 3 - Burn After Reading 4 - Se7en 5 - Snatch Favorite Movies: 1 - The Ocean's Trilogy (12) 2 - Troy 3 - Moneyball 4 - Se7en 5 - Fight Club Honorable Mentions: Burn After Reading, 12 Monkeys, The Big Short, Cool World
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Fight Club Ocean's Eleven Inglorious Bastards Seven I still love Sean's view that "He's a Character Actor trapped in an A-Lister's Body." I use that line and sound brilliant in conversations. So thank you for that.
They are spot on about Moneyball, it's one of my favourite movies of the last 20 years and I'm not a baseball fan at all. And it probably is his best performance, should have won the Oscar that year 100%
Ocean's 11 is such a good movie and it is so easy for actors, writers, directors -- the whole crew -- in a movie like that to completely mail in their performances and they don't.
A River Runs Through It is a beautiful film. I lost my brother recently and the themes that are playing out in the film really speak to me, but they have since I saw it when it came out. It's honestly in my top ten films of all time. I think the idea that it's "boring" is an unfortunate product of the era we live in where every film has to be part comic book film, even the dramas.
What about "Spy Game" with Redford? That scene on the top of the building where Pitt goes off and flings the steel chair down into traffic, was powerful.
The best Pitt roles are when he's NOT front and center, but where he can sink his teeth in good character roles. His role in Snatch is good. But the one where he DISAPPEARS BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES is 12 Monkeys. You forget it's Brad Pitt. You forget it's Pitt with Bruce Willis. That specific role really just made me see him more that women eye candy, but an excellent & very capable actor.
i hear what sean is saying about how over-the-top and noticeable his performance in Inglorious Basterds is, but, the entire friggin movie is so over-the-top. It'd be weird if he wasn't. And, as usual, he's a huge part of what makes it so good.
Ocean's 11 is absolutely his best performance. There's no more "Brad Pitt" Brad Pitt performance. Soderbergh makes everything in that movie super slick and cool, and Pitt is somehow slicker and cooler than anyone else. Moneyball is his best for serious performances.
for me, Moneyball is #1 b/c he makes it so look so stinking easy. He is in almost every shot. He IS the movie, it is so entertaining. He makes it look SO SO EASY.
i admittedly haven't seen many of his movies pre-Seven, but the main reason i always say he's a character actor stuck in a movie star's face is b/c there are so many beautiful people are sh*tty actors but he's not one of them. even if he's choosing supporting parts -- he chooses well. there is absolutely a skill to choosing parts and then executing on a high level.
Se7en Snatch Fight Club Inglorious Bastards Oceans 11 You can't tell the story of his career without these performances. Also, and I know everyone has a film they love that the world hates, and if you enjoy classic films from the 40s, 50s and 60s, then you appreciate Meet Joe Black. It has 5 to 10 lines which have stuck with me my whole life and 5 scenes that I would stack up against any scene for dialogue.
Moneyball no question is Brad Pitts best performance but not having fight club in your top 5??? I know it’s more memorable for the ed norton performance but damn brad pitt kills it in that movie too
Firstly Snatch is a great film and for 'British Gyspy' read 'Irish traveler' and supposedly - according to some Irish travelers - his accent was pretty sport on.
Curious Case of Benjamin Button is #1 for me….just go back and watch it and I don’t understand how your not absolutely blown away by how great that movie is
I'm a huge Brad Pitt fan, but I have never understood the love for Moneyball. I recently re-watched that movie to try and see what I missed and I still found it so boring and uninteresting. I'm a huge sports fan too, but I just thought that this particular subject matter was so dull for a movie plot.
new to your channel..........oh, wow, did you two miss appreciating "A River Runs Through It". ("Burn After Reading"?.......oy)...........but reasonable people can agree to disagree. thanks for posting.
You are not. I think the Ringer has thrown shade at it a few times, but I see at least one other person on here who had it on his list. I fucking *love* Troy, it's so good. Three of the best battle/fight scenes of all-time (they span the gamut: a big battle scene - when Troy takes the beach ahead of the entire army - a fucking fantastic one-on-one battle - Achilles vs Hector - and a great one that establishes Achilles' badass cred - Achilles vs Boagrias (sp?). The only other fighting scene I'd put up there in that tier is Dread Pirate Westley vs Inigo Montoya; maybe not technically as good as Achilles vs Hector - although it's close - but more satisfying because of the banter). And what a great cast too. That movie might not be as high a quality as some of his other stuff like Se7en, Fight Club, Moneyball, or The Big Short, but goddamn it's a fun fucking movie.
I’ve seen dialect coaches criticizing his southern accent in inglorious basterds, but I think they’re missing the point. Without brad Pitt as Aldo I don’t think that movie is as iconic as it is today. People will be quoting him for the next 100 years
I don't feel Sean and Amanda took the seriousness of Brad Pitt's epic career, Fight Club is his best ever, and 12 monkeys was his breakout as a contending actor, for G's sake he got nominated for an Oscar for this. He also had very good movies in Spy Game, Babel, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Tree of Life. Kalifornia is also pretty good. Amanda's list is extremely superficial. I appreciate Sean for including Snatch and Seven.
Unclear why it was necessary to shade Will Smith and Tom Cruise when discussing the kind of actor Brad Pitt is. What's the point? That they make/made different choices? What's Will Smith on Instagram and Tom Cruise dancing have to do with Brad Pitt's performances?
Sean Penn shouldn't be on that list. Replace him with DiCaprio. Plus Daniel Day Lewis is a phenomenal actor, one of the best ever, but he's not really a "movie star".
@@gdawgs101 DDL is definitely an actor, not a movie star. I'd say Leo is more often actor than movie star, although he does dabble in movie stardom. The big, supernova movie stars? I'd say it's Tom Cruise, Will Smith (probably still), and then Brad Pitt. Maybe Tom Hanks too. I'd argue that Cruise and Smith and probably more bankable, so it depends on what you mean by "greater", but if we're talking about somebody who is a 5-tool star? Definitely Brad Pitt, hands down. (The acting, the choices he makes, and of course the charisma/movie stardom.)
@@gdawgs101 nonsense. if we're talking best living actor who does lead roles, it's Sean Penn and Daniel Day Lewis and everyone else is below them, Brad several notches down as he's not a particularly good actor. He has like one schtick - the cocky guy. If we're talking bankable movie stars right now, Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon, Denzel, Will Smith, Jake Gyllenhaal all will get you more bums on seats. You could even argue Tom Hardy moves the needle as much as Brad Pitt right now.
@@davemccrea9000 But guess what? We're talking about best living *movie stars* not best living actors who do lead roles. Two different things. We're talking about the most marketable superstars not the best character actors. Nicholas Cage explains the difference between a movie star and an actor: "An actor is someone who pretends to be somebody else. A movie star is somebody who pretends that somebody else is them. Actors will change their face, will change their hair, will change their voice, will disappear into the role. A movie star doesn’t disappear." Movie Stars: Tom Cruise, the Rock, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Wayne, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, Will Ferrell, ect. Actors: Daniel Day-Lewis, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Ed Norton, Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, ect.
I often wonder if the powers that be held off on giving Bradd Pitt an Oscar because he was a little "too out there" or unconventional Ala Johnny Depp who also has been denied. Or was it because of his tabloid scandal plagued marriage to Angelina Jolie? Or were both put down as just "pretty faces" as their incredible good looks and sexiness made them seem shallow somehow. Pitt is a great actor who has dared to take on tricky risky roles as well as more conventional ones like Ocean's 11.
.....Greatest living actor? .......Over Denzel Washington?......Filmography Please!!! You have got to be kidding. Look Nic Cage will give him a serious run for the money, STOP IT.
Performances or movies? If the latter I'll go with: 1) Se7en 2)Moneyball (probably his best performance IMO) 3)The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford 4)Fight Club 5)Meet Joe Black/True Romance
Brad Pitt is my favorite living actor- and my favorite is Meet Joe Black. That was the film that made me realize that he was on of the best & most under-rated actors on the planet.
I cannot Inglourious Basterds as one of his best, considering the epicness of Christoph Waltz character "Hans Landa" and besides the bar fight PRELUDE does not include Pitt.
For me I enjoy the performance not because it's his best work but it literally is a good bad performance like it's on purpose & being made fun of & it has aged well. Of course Kristoph owns the movie
